아부다비 물연구센터, UAE 물 기술·물 정책 분야 최첨단 연구개발 지원

뉴욕대학교 아부다비 물연구센터(New York University Abu Dhabi Water Research Center ; NYUAD-WRC)는 에미레이트 수도전기회사(EWEC ; Emirates Water and Electricity Company)와 협력하여 물 보안 및 지속가능성을 위한 임무를 지원하고 있다.

이 연구센터는 과학지식이 실질적인 해결책으로 탈바꿈하는 담수화 및 분리막 기술 혁신, 하·폐수 처리 및 사회적 문제에 대한 연구를 위한 학제간 혁신 허브 역할을 하며 과학적 지식이 실용적인 솔루션으로 전환된다.

새로운 파트너십은 뉴욕대학교 아부다비(NYUAD) 학생들을 참여시켜 물 연구의 지속적인 발전에 기여하고 UAE의 사막 기후와 제한된 담수 공급을 고려할 때 특히 적절한 물관리에 대해 교육을 할 수 있다.

두 기관은 물 관련 주제와 과제를 탐구하는 일반 대중에게 공개되는 웹세미나(webinars)를 공동 주최할 예정이다. EWEC는 또한 유사한 분야의 저명한 전문가 그룹인 NYUAD-WRC의 산업자문위원회(Industry Advisory Board)에 합류할 예정이며, 여기서 경험과 지식을 공유하여 복잡한 세계의 도전 과제에 기여할 수 있다.

EWEC의 오스만 알 알리(Othman Al Ali) CEO는 “우리는 UAE의 혁신을 활용하여 세계 최고의 연구를 수행하고 있는 NYUAD-WRC를 지지하게 되어 매우 자랑스럽다”라면서 “EWEC는 수도와 전기 생산을 분리하여 아부다비의 물 담수화 시스템을 보다 지속가능하고 효율적인 시스템으로 전환하는 역삼투 기술을 활용한 전략적인 저탄소 물 생산 프로그램을 구현하고 있다”고 말했다.

알 알리 CEO는 이어 “이번 파트너십을 통해 EWEC는 전문지식을 공유하고 참여형 교육 콘텐츠를 공동 개발하며 NYUAD-WRC의 UAE 첨단 RO 멤브레인 기술 연구개발을 지원하고 NYUAD 학생들이 지속가능한 음용수 생산에 있어 차세대 혁신가이자 리더가 될 수 있도록 격려할 것”이라고 덧붙였다.

뉴욕대학교 아부다비(NYUAD)의 마리에트 베스테르만(Mariet Westermann) 부총장은 “UAE의 주요 이해 관계자들과의 협력을 보게 되어 항상 기쁘다. 물 지속가능성과 안보를 위한 물연구센터의 중대한 임무는 우리 공동체의 발전을 위한 기본이다. EWEC와의 새로운 협정은 이 작업을 지원하고 캠퍼스의 담수화 프로세스를 보다 지속가능한 관행으로 전환하는 데 도움이 될 수 있다”고 말했다.

베스테르만 부총장은 또 “NYUAD가 캠퍼스 안팎에서 지속가능성 측정을 늘리고 가속화함에 따라 이번 파트너십을 통해 UAE와 더 넓은 지역, 그리고 전 세계 물 연구 및 연구의 범위와 효율성을 향상시키고 가장 시급한 환경문제에 대한 변화를 위한 집단행동을 추진하게 될 것”이라고 강조했다.

유니세프(UNICEF ; 유엔아동기금)와 세계보건기구(WHO)에 따르면 전 세계 인구 3명 중 1명이 안전한 식수를 공급받지 못하고 있다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 뉴욕대학RY 아부다비 물연구센터(NYUAD-WRC)는 지역과 그밖의 지역의 물 문제를 해결하기 위해 통합된 물 연구를 발전시키기 위한 연구와 교육의 독특한 골격(framework)를 개발하고 있다.

NYUAD-WRC는 ‘아랍에미리트 물안보 전략 2036(UAE Water Security Strategy 2036)’및 번영과 지속가능성을 달성하고자 하는 국가의 비전에 따라 물 관련 기술, 환경 프로세스, 물 정책 분야의 최첨단 다분야 연구 개발을 지원하고 있다.

EWEC는 물 담수화를 위한 최첨단 저탄소 기술인 역삼투(RO)를 채택했으며 현재 타윌라(Taweelah) RO 개발을 관리하고 있다. 타윌라 RO는 2022년에 완공되면 세계 최대의 RO 담수화 플랜트가 될 것이며, 하루에 2억 갤런(MGD)을 생산 및 공급하여 35만 가구 이상의 물 수요를 충족시킬 계획이다.

게다가, EWEC는 각각 최대 150MGD와 최대 70MGD의 물을 제공하는 새로운 저탄소 물 담수화 프로젝트인 미르파 2단계(Mirfa 2)와 슈웨이하트 4단계(Shuweihat S4) 개발도 발표했다.

뉴욕대학 아부다비 물연구센터(NYUAD-WRC)의 공학 교수이자 책임자인 니달 힐랄(Nidal Hilal)은 “UAE는 상업 및 도시 개발, 산업화, 인구 증가에 의해 지속적으로 증가하는 수요로 인해 물이 부족하다. 그 나라는 이 개발을 지속하기 위해 향후 20년 동안 더 많은 식수 공급이 필요하다”고 강조했다.

힐랄 교수는 이어 “해수와 지하수의 담수화, 산업 및 가정용 하·폐수 처리를 통한 식수 공급은 중대한 과제”라면서 “UAE에서 효율적이고 지속가능한 물관리 전략을 조언하는 데 필요한 획기적인 연구를 지속적으로 제공할 수 있도록 지원하고 있는 EWEC에 감사드린다”라고 말했다.

EWEC와 NYUAD는 파트너십 외에도 물 홍보대사상(Water Ambassador Award)을 발표한다. 수상자는 NYUAD의 UAE 국적 학생 중에서 매년 경쟁을 통해 선정된다.

NYU Abu Dhabi’s Water Research Center Partners with Emirates Water and Electricity Company to Advance Water Management Research and Sustainability

NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) has partnered with Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) to support the NYUAD Water Research Center’s (NYUAD-WRC) mission for water security and sustainability. 

The center serves as an interdisciplinary innovation hub for research in water desalination and membrane technology innovation, wastewater treatment, and social issues, where scientific knowledge is transformed into practical solutions.

The new partnership will engage NYUAD students to contribute to the continued advancement of water research, and educate them on water management, which is especially pertinent considering the UAE’s desert climate and limited fresh water supply. 

The two institutions will co-host webinars, which will be open to the public, delving into water-related topics and challenges. EWEC will also join the NYUAD Water Research Center’s Industry Advisory Board, a group of distinguished professionals in similar fields, where experience and knowledge can be shared to contribute to the challenges in a complex world. 

Othman Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer of EWEC, said: “We are extremely proud to be supporting the NYUAD-WRC, which is conducting world-leading research utilizing UAE innovations. EWEC is implementing a strategic low carbon water production program using reverse osmosis technology that will decouple water and electricity production, and transition Abu Dhabi’s water desalination to a more sustainable and efficient system."

According to UNICEF and the World Health Organization one in three people globally do not have access to safe drinking water. To help meet that challenge, the NYUAD Water Research Center is developing a unique framework of research and education to advance integrated water research to tackle water challenges in the region and beyond. 

NYUAD-Water Research Center supports cutting-edge multidisciplinary research and development in water-related technologies, environmental processes, and water policy, in line with the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 and the country’s vision to achieve prosperity and sustainability.

EWEC has adopted the cutting-edge low-carbon technology of reverse osmosis (RO) for water desalination and is currently managing the development of Taweelah RO, which will be the world’s largest RO desalination plant upon completion in 2022, supplying 200 million gallons per day (MGD) to meet the water demand for over 350,000 households.

 Furthermore, EWEC has also announced the development of the new low-carbon water desalination projects Mirfa 2 and Shuweihat S4, which will provide up to 150 MGD and up to 70 MGD of water respectively.

Professor of Engineering and Director of NYUAD Water Research Center Nidal Hilal said: “The UAE has a scarcity of water due to an ever-growing demand caused by commercial and urban development, industrialization, and population growth. The country needs more potable water supplies over the next 20 years to sustain this development. 

The provision of drinkable supplies through desalination of sea and groundwater, and through the treatment of industrial and domestic wastewater is a significant challenge.  We are incredibly grateful to EWEC for its support which enables us to continue to deliver the groundbreaking research required to advise on efficient and sustainable water management strategies in the UAE.”

In addition to the partnership, EWEC and NYUAD are announcing a Water Ambassador award. Winners will be selected from UAE national students at NYUAD through a yearly competition.
