북유럽환경금융공사(Nefco : Nordic Environment Finance Corporation)는 배터리가 없는 담수화 시스템의 국제화를 가속화하기 위해 솔라워터솔루션(Solar Water Solutions)에 대한 자금 지원을 승인했다.

해수나 오염된 물을 식수로 바꾸는 태양열 정수장치(solar-powered water purification units)를 통해 오는 2028년까지 전 세계적으로 350억 달러에 이를 것으로 추정되는 급속하게 성장하고 있는 독립형 제로배출 담수화 시장(off-grid zero-emission desalination market)을 공략하고 가뭄에 시달리는 농촌사회에 안전하고 지속가능한 물을 공급하고 있다.

자금 조달은 네프코(Nefco : 북유럽환경금융공사)의 그린 리커버리 론 프로그램(Green Recovery Loan Programme)을 통해 제공되며, 이는 글로벌 시장에서 노르딕 그린 솔루션(Nordic green solution)의 성장과 규모 확대(scale-up)를 가속화하는 데 도움이 된다.

무배출 담수화 물안보 개선(Improving water security with zero-emission desalination)

솔라워터솔루션은 태양 에너지로 구동되는 소규모 분산형 역삼투압 담수화 장치(small-scale decentralised reverse osmosis desalination unit)를 제공하며, 태양 이외의 시간대에 추가적인 풍력발전이나 그리드(grid)를 사용하기 위해 쉽게 통합할 수 있다.

네프코(Nefco)의 녹색회복금융(green recovery financing)을 통해 솔라워터솔루션은 모로코 남부지역인 겔밈 우에드 나운(Guelmim Oued Noun)의 10개 정수처리장 제조·운반·설치에 필요한 운영자금 비용을 충당할 수 있게 됐다.

이 사업은 지역 그린솔루션 기업인 아틀라스 인클루시브 파트너스(Atlas Inclusive Partners)와 협력하여 수행된다. 지난 2년 동안 이 지역은 역사상 가장 광범위한 가뭄을 경험했고, 이로 인해 지역 정부는 운영과 유지에 대한 요구사항이 적은 분산형 정수처리 시스템(decentralised water treatment system)을 모색하게 되었다.

솔라워터솔루션의 정수처리 장치의 새로운 구성은 정수 공정의 비용과 탄소발자국(carbon footprint)을 크게 줄여 시중에서 가장 비용 효율적인 태양열 정수처리 시스템 중 하나가 되었다.

식수 및 농업용수를 위한 저렴하고, 안전하고, 지속가능한 물 공급으로, 물이 부족한 지역의 주민들의 생계를 개선하고 심각한 가뭄의 영향을 덜 받을 수 있다. 솔라워터솔루션의 독특한 기수 시스템(brackish water system)은 최대 90%의 회수율을 가지고 있어 부족한 지하수 공급원을 절약하는 생태적인 물 정화가 가능하다.

화석연료와 전자폐기물이 없는 깨끗한 물(Clean water without fossil fuels and e-waste)

2015년 설립된 가족기업인 솔라워터솔루션의 에너지 효율적인 담수화 혁신은 지난 25년간 재생에너지에 주력해온 핀란드 엔지니어 헤이키 포욜라(Heikki Pohjola)의 광범위한 연구를 기반으로 하고 있다.

첫 번째 파일럿(pilot)은 알토대학교(Aalto University) 에너지 기술학과와 긴밀히 협력하여 개발되었다. 이 회사는 기술의 설치, 서비스 및 유지관리를 위해 지역 전문 정수처리 전문가들과 협력한다.

네프코(Nefco)로부터의 자금 조달은 또한 마다가스카르와 카리브해와 같은 다른 신흥 시장으로의 확장을 지원할 것이다.

회사의 계산에 따르면 모로코에서 제품 수명 주기 동안 솔라워터솔루션의 시스템이 환경에 미치는 직접적인 영향은 다음과 같다.

첫째, CO2(이산화탄소) 배출량 5만7천 톤 감소이다. 또 분산형 담수화 장치(Decentralised desalination units)는 물이 현지에서 정제되고 소비되기 때문에 물 공급에서 발생하는 CO2 배출량을 감소시킨다. 따라서 솔라워터솔루션이 납품할 10개의 정수처리 장치는 5만7천 톤의 CO2 배출량을 줄일 수 있다.

둘째로, 폐기물 1천600톤을 감소시킬 수 있다. 배터리가 없는 담수화 장치는 순수하게 태양열로 작동한다. 이 프로젝트는 사용된 배터리에서 나오는 약 1천600톤의 유해 폐기물이 지상으로 유입되는 것을 방지할 수 있다.

셋째로, 건조한 지역의 물안보가 개선되었다. 기후변화로 가뭄 발생 가능성이 높아지는 점을 고려해 분산형 태양열 정수처리 시스템(decentralised solar-powered water treatment system)은 기후변화 적응과 물 안보를 개선하기 위한 솔루션을 제공한다.

Solar Water Solutions receives funding from Nefco to scale up solar-powered water purification in water-scarce countries 

- The Finnish family enterprise aims to fill the need for sustainable and affordable drinking water in rural areas.

Nefco has granted financing for Solar Water Solutions to speed up the internationalisation of its battery-free desalination systems. 

With its solar-powered water purification units that turn seawater or any contaminated water into drinking water, the company is tapping into the rapidly growing off-grid zero-emission desalination market, estimated to reach USD 35 billion globally by 2028, and enabling safe and sustainable water for drought-stricken rural communities. 

The financing is provided through Nefco’s Green Recovery Loan Programme, which helps accelerate the growth and scale-up of Nordic green solutions on global markets. 

Improving water security with zero-emission desalination

Solar Water Solutions provides small-scale, decentralised reverse osmosis desalination units powered by solar energy that can be easily integrated to use supplemental wind power or the grid during non-solar hours.

 

The green recovery financing from Nefco will enable Solar Water Solutions to cover working capital costs for manufacturing, delivering, and installing 10 water treatment units in Guelmim Oued Noun, a region in the southern part of Morocco. 

The project will be carried out in partnership with Atlas Inclusive Partners, a local green solutions company. For the last two years, the region has been experiencing its most extensive drought in history, which has led the regional government to seek decentralised water treatment systems with fewer operational and maintenance requirements. 

The novel configuration of Solar Water Solutions’ water treatment units significantly reduces both the cost and carbon footprint of the water purification process, making it one of the most cost-efficient solar-powered water treatment systems on the market. 

With an affordable, safe, and sustainable water supply for drinking and agricultural use, communities in water-scarce regions can improve their livelihoods and be less impacted by severe droughts. The company’s unique brackish water systems have up to 90 % recovery rate enabling ecological water purification saving the scarce groundwater sources.

Clean water without fossil fuels and e-waste 

A family enterprise founded in 2015, Solar Water Solutions’ innovation for energy-efficient desalination is based on the extensive research of Heikki Pohjola, a Finnish engineer, whose focus has been on renewable energy for the past 25 years. 

The first pilot was developed in close co-operation with Aalto University Department of Energy Technology. The company partners with local professional water treatment specialists for the installation, services, and maintenance of the technology.

Expected direct environmental impact of the Solar Water Solutions’ systems throughout the product life cycle in Morocco according to the company’s calculations:

Decreasing CO2emissions by 57 000 tonnes. Decentralised desalination units reduce CO2 emissions from water transportation as the water is purified and consumed locally. The 10 water treatment units to be delivered by the company will reduce CO2 emissions by 57 000 tonnes.

Reducing waste by 1600 tonnes.Battery-free desalination units run purely on solar power. The project will prevent approximately 1600 tonnes of hazardous waste from used batteries from entering the ground.

Improved water security in dry areas.Considering the increasing probability of droughts due to climate change, decentralised solar-powered water treatment systems provide a solution for adapting to climate change and improving water security.
