Suzlon loses top spot in Indian wind turbine market
India¡¯s Suzlon Energy Ltd., one of the largest manufacturers of wind turbines in the world, has ceded its position as the country¡¯s top wind-turbine supplier for the last fiscal year.
According to a Bloomberg report, figures from industry group Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers¡¯ Association showed that, for the year ended this March 21, Suzlon had 415 megawatts of installation. This sets it behind Wind World (India) Ltd., which reported installation of 454 megawatts last fiscal year.
Formerly known as Enercon (India), Wind World (India) Ltd. is now the top wind-turbine supplier in India.
Suzlon has reported difficulties in carrying out orders due to a lack of working capital in the past three quarters. In an e-mailed response to Bloomberg, the company stated that its performance last year was hampered by its debt problems and by the suspension of two government incentives.
As of a statement released on April 23, the company completed a 95 billion rupee ($1.8 billion) debt reorganization plan that will allow it to execute $7 billion of orders.
The I.W.T.M.A. figures, however, contradict an earlier statement from Suzlon in April which cited a report from BTM Consult APS, a part of Navigant Consulting.
This report ranked Suzlon as the leading wind company in India, supplying 803 megawatts or 34 percent of market share in 2012.
The Navigant report also ranked Suzlon as the second leading supplier in Canada and the third in France, Germany and Italy.
All in all, even if it may have lost the home company advantage, Suzlon was seen as ending 2012 as the world¡¯s fifth leading wind turbine supplier in terms of market share and cumulative capacity. The Navigant report stated Suzlon had 7.4 percent of the global market share in 2012.
At any rate, the company shows no signs of slowing down, announcing that for the three month period between the 15th of February this year to the 15th of May it had won 580 MW in new orders. These are for installations across Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, India, Poland and Sweden. - EcoSeed Staff
