[이스라엘] 벤구리온 대학, " '코로나19' 확산 줄이기 위해 하·폐수 추가적 처리 필요"

이스라엘 하·폐수처리장 샘플에서 코로나바이러스(coronavirus) RNA를 발견한 벤구리온대학(Ben-Gurion University)의  Negev(BGU) 연구진에 따르면  '사스-CoV-2( SARS-CoV-2)'의 확산과 감염 위험을 최소화하기 위해 하·폐수를 추가로 처리해야 한다고 주장한다.

동료검토 이전 단계의 논문들이 저장된 사이트인 '메드아카이브(MedRxiv)' 10월 19일에 게재된 이번 연구는 수처리 단계에서  '사스-CoV-2( SARS-CoV-2)'가 존재에 대한 최초의 연구이다.

 '코로나19(COVID-19)' 발병 지역에서 발생하는 하수는  '사스-CoV-2( SARS-CoV-2)'를 감염된 사람들이 흘린 소변과 대변으로 하수처리장으로 운반한다.

BGU 연구팀은 4월 봉쇄와 7월 제2 유행 때 채취한 여러 처리 단계에서 하·폐수 시료를 분석했다.

BGU의 야곱블로스틴연구소(Jacob Blostain Institute)의 공동 책임연구원인 오디드 니르(Oded Nir) 박사는 "반복적인 발생을 원하지 않으면 감염을 줄이고 하·폐수 처리도 중화해야 한다"고 강조했다.

오디드 니르(Oded Nir) 박사는 이어 "전반적으로, 우리의 결과는 처리된 하·폐수와 처리되지 않은 하·폐수에서  '사스-CoV-2( SARS-CoV-2)'의 발생과 감염성에 대한 추가 연구가 필요하다"고 역설했다.

미국, 이스라엘 등 선진국의 대부분의 하수가 환경에 방출되거나 재사용되기 전에 생물학적 처리를 거치는 반면, 연구자들은 기존 과정이 바이러스 농도를 검출할 수 없는 수준으로 낮추기에는 부적합하다는 것을 발견했다.

물을 처리하지 않고 방치하는 국가와 지역에서는 사람과 동물의 감염 통로가 될 수 있다는 것이다.

BGU 연구원들에 따르면, 염소로 치료했을 때, 그 바이러스는 더 이상 검출할 수 없었다.

염소화가 바이러스 제거에 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났지만 '사스-CoV-2(SARS-CoV-2)' 흔적을 완전히 제거하기 위해서는 적절한 수준을 결정해야 한다.

벤구리온대학(Ben-Gurion University) 네게브(Negev) 아메리칸 어소시에이츠(American Associates)의 더그 세서먼(Doug Seserman) 최고경영자(CEO)는 "공공기관들이 '코로나19(COVID-19)'를 검출하기 위해 물 샘플을 검토하고 있지만, BGU의 물 연구자들은 지역사회를 안전하게 지키기 위해 바이러스를 제거하는 방법을 결정하는 데 앞장서고 있다"고 말했다.

더그 세서먼(Doug Seserman) CEO는 이어 "이는 미국 기부자들이 제공한 긴급 자금 덕분에 BGU의 COVID-19 프로젝트 중 일부에 불과하다"고 말했다.

BGU 에이브럼(Avram)의 에어리얼 쿠쉬마아로우(Ariel Kushmaro) 교수와 스텔러 골드스타인 고런(Stella Goldstein-Goren) 생명공학부가 공동 연구를 이끌었다.

Wastewater Requires Additional Treatment To Reduce Spread Of Coronavirus According To New Ben-Gurion University Study

Wastewater must be further treated to minimize the risk of dissemination and infection of SARS-CoV-2, according to Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) researchers, who found coronavirus RNA in samples from Israeli water treatment plants.

Published today on medRxiv in advance of peer review, this is the first research on the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in water treatment stages.

Sewage originating from areas facing COVID-19 outbreak carry SARS-CoV-2 to wastewater treatment plants in urine and feces shed by those who are infected.

The BGU research team analyzed wastewater samples at several treatment stages collected during the April lockdown and a second wave in July.

“If we do not want recurring waves of outbreaks, we must reduce the infection and neutralize wastewater treatment as well,” says co-lead researcher Dr. Oded Nir of the Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research, part of BGU’s Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research.

“Overall, our results highlight the need for further research on the occurrence and infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 in treated and untreated wastewater.”

While most of the sewage in the United States, Israel and other developed countries undergoes biological treatment before release to the environment or reuse, the researchers found that existing processes were inadequate to reduce the virus concentration to undetectable levels.

In countries and areas where water is left untreated, it can be a conduit for infection of people and animals.

According to the BGU researchers, when treated with chlorine, the virus was no longer detectable.

While, chlorination was found to be effective in removing the virus, determining the proper levels will be required to ensure complete removal of SARS-CoV-2 traces.

“While utilities are now looking at their water samples to detect COVID-19, BGU’s water researchers are leading the way in determining how to remove the virus to keep communities safe,” says Doug Seserman, chief executive officer of American Associates, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.

 “This is just one of a number of BGU’s COVID-19 projects that address water detection and water treatment, thanks in part to emergency funds provided by American donors.”

Prof. Ariel Kushmaro of the BGU Avram and Stella Goldstein-Goren Department of Biotechnology Engineering co-led the study.
