[미국] 뉴저지 아메리카워터 수처리 공정 임시변경

뉴저지 최대의 수도유틸리티 회사인 뉴저지 아메리칸 워터사(New Jersey American Water)는 뉴저지주 중부와 북부 지역에 서비스를 제공하는 래리탄-밀스톤(Raritan-Millstone) 및 운하 수처리 플랜트(Canal Road Water Treatment plants)의 수처리 공정을 일시적으로 변경했다고 발표했다.

이 계획의 일환으로, 물 유틸리티 회사는 수처리 과정을 에섹스(Essex), 헌터돈(Hunterdon), 머서(Mercer), 미들섹스(Middlesex), 모리스(Morris), 서머셋(Somerset) 및 유니언 카운티(Union counties)에 있는 고객에게 서비스를 제공하는 수처리 플랜트의 클로라민(결합된) 잔류물에서 유리염소(free chlorine) 잔류물로 변경할 예정이다.

아메리칸 워터(American Water)의 자회사인 뉴저지 아메리칸 워터(New Jersey American Water)는 1970년대부터 수처리 과정에서 클로라민류(chloramines)을 사용해 왔다고 말했다.

뉴저지주의 물환경 준수 및 수질담당 이사인 매튜 칙(Matthew Csik)은 "이러한 주기적인 소독제 변경은 고객에게 안전하고 질 높은 물을 지속적으로 공급할 수 있도록 하는 표준 수처리 방법이다"라고 말했다.

매튜 칙(Matthew Csik) 이사는 이어 "우리는 유통 시스템의 파이프라인을 더욱 소독하기 위한 추가적인 조치로 이 유통 시스템 유지관리 프로그램을 매년 수행하고 있다"라고 덧붙였다.

임시 수처리 공정은 2021년 1월 12일부터 시작하여 2021년 4월 말까지 계속될 예정이다.

New Jersey American Water to make temporary changes in water treatment process

New Jersey’s largest water utility company New Jersey American Water has announced temporary changes to its water treatment process at its Raritan-Millstone and Canal Road Water Treatment plants, which serve the central and northern parts of the state.

As part of this initiative, the water utility company will change the water treatment process from a chloramine (combined) residual to free chlorine residual at the water treatment plants, which serve its customers in Essex, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset and Union counties.

New Jersey American Water, which is a subsidiary of American Water, said that it has been using chloramines in its water treatment process since the 1970s.

New Jersey American Water Environmental Compliance and Water Quality director Matthew Csik said: “This periodic, scheduled change in disinfectant is a standard water-treatment practice that allows us to continue to provide safe, high-quality water for our customers. 

“We perform this distribution system maintenance programme every year as an added measure to further disinfect the pipelines in our distribution system.”

The temporary water treatment process is scheduled to begin from 12 January 2021 and continue until the end of April 2021.

The company said that during this period the water could have a slight taste and smell of chlorine.

New Jersey American Water said that the customers who want to reduce the taste of chlorine can place water in an uncovered glass container in the refrigerator overnight in order to help the quicker dissipation of chlorine.

Csik added: “As always, we will continue to monitor water quality in the system to provide that customers receive water that meets or is better than federal and state drinking water standards.”
