[사우디] KAUST, ACWA파워와 전략적 녹색 담수화 프로젝트 협약

사우디 녹색 담수화 계획추진 목표…‘사우디 비전 2030’과 유엔 SDGs 기여

사우디아라비아 킹 압둘라 과학기술대학(KAUST ; King Abdullah University of Science and Technology)는 사우디의 대표적인 발전·담수·그린 수소플랜트 개발·투자·운영사인 인 ACWA파워(ACWA Power)와 네 가지 전략적 프로젝트 계약을 체결했다.

이 연구 협력은 사우디와 국제적으로 가시적인 영향을 미치는 녹색 담수화 계획(green hydrogen plant을 추진하는 것을 목표로 한다. ‘사우디 비전 2030’과 유엔 지속가능 개발목표(UN SDGs)에 기여한다.

KAUST에서 진행된 이번 협약식은 사우디아라비아 학계와 산업계의 장기적인 연구와 혁신 파트너십을 강조하고 있다.

이러한 협력은 사우디아라비아가 국제적인 과학 발전의 선두에 서서 담수화된 물 생산에서 세계적인 리더로서의 위치를 유지할 수 있도록 하는 데 계속해서 중요하다.

KAUST와 ACWA파워는 인공지능과 모델링을 통해 해수담수화 공정을 최적화하고 담수화 플랜트 운영을 더 잘 모니터링·예측하는 데 상호 이해관계가 있다.

ACWA파워는 13개국에 진출하여 발전 및 담수화 물 생산 시설의 세계적인 독립 개발기업이자 투자 및 운영기업 중 하나이다.

KAUST의 물 담수화 및 재사용 센터장인 요하네스 브루웬벨더(Johannes Brouwenvelder) 교수는 “ACWA파워와의 이러한 협력은 담수화 분야에 상당한 영향을 미칠 것이다. 우리의 파트너십은 학술 연구를 입증 가능한 영향으로 전환하여 더 낮은 비용으로 녹색 담수화로 이어져 사우디의 물 안전 미래에 기여할 것이다”라고 강조했다.

ACWA파워의 토마스 알트만(Thomas Altmann) 혁신 및 신기술 담당 부사장은 “혁신은 우리 일의 핵심이자 우리를 앞으로 나아가게 한다. 그것은 미래이다. KAUST를 통해 비즈니스에 가치를 더하는 연구 파트너를 찾았고, 우리의 작업은 매우 칭찬받을 만하다”고 말했다.

토마스 알트만 부사장은 이어 “이 프로젝트는 지역사회와 산업계 모두에 담수화를 통해 담수화를 가져오는 현실적인 문제를 해결하기 위해 학계와 기업이 협력하는 잠재력을 보여줄 것이다. 이번 협력을 통해 연구 지원 프로젝트를 직접 구현할 수 있기를 바란다”고 덧붙였다.

KAUST signed four strategic project agreements with ACWA Power, a leading Saudi developer, investor, and operator of power generation, water desalination and green hydrogen plants worldwide.

This research collaboration aims to drive greener desalination initiatives towards tangible impact both in Saudi Arabia and internationally; contributing to Saudi Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The signing ceremony, which took place in KAUST, highlights the long-term research and innovation partnership between academia and industry in Saudi Arabia. 

Such collaborations will continue to be crucial in enabling the Kingdom to remain at the forefront of international scientific advances and maintain its position as a world leader in desalinated water production.

KAUST and ACWA Power have a mutual interest in optimising seawater desalination processes and better monitoring/predicting desalination plant operations through artificial intelligence and modeling. 

With presence in 13 countries, ACWA Power is one of the world’s leading independent developers, investors, and operators of power generation and desalinated water production plants.

“This collaboration with ACWA Power will significantly impact the desalination sector. Our partnership will help the translation of academic research into demonstrable impact, leading to greener desalination at lower cost, contributing to the Kingdom’s water-secure future.“ said Prof. Johannes Vrouwenvelder, Director of the Water Desalination and Reuse Center at KAUST.
