[미국] 미 피츠버그, 첫번째 물 신뢰성 계획 프로젝트 완료

하이랜드 II 저수지, 2천400만달러 들여 개선 후 서비스 재개

미국 피츠버그 상하수도국(Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority, PWSA)은 지난 1월 9일 라이너와 덮개를 교체한 후 1억2천500만 갤런 규모의 저수지를 복구했다고 밝혔다. 지난해 북미 최대 규모로 9개월 간 진행된 이 프로젝트는 향후 물 신뢰성 계획(Water Reliability Plan)에서 핵심적인 역할을 수행할 저수지의 신뢰성과 안전성을 보장했다.

1897년에서 1903년 사이에 건설된 하이랜드 II(Highland II) 저수지는 스쿼럴 힐(Squirrel Hill), 다운타운(Downtown), 사우스 사이드(South Side) 및 웨스트 엔드(West End)의 일부 지역에 물을 공급하여 물공급 시스템의 중요한 부분을 차지하고 있다. PWSA는 저수지를 배수하고 이전 자재(materials)를 제거하고 새 라이너, 플로팅 커버 및 빗물 제거 펌프와 같은 보조 장비를 설치했다. 이 작업은 다른 물 신뢰성 계획 프로젝트가 진행됨에 따라 구조물에 25년 이상의 서비스 기간을 늘리고 신뢰성을 더욱 향상시킬 것이다.

물 신뢰성 계획은 100년 된 클리어웰(Clearwell)의 완전한 복구와 함께 완료될 것이다. 정수장에 위치한 이 구조물은 처리수를 염소와 접촉시켜 물 속에 있는 박테리아와 병원균을 모두 사멸시켜 수돗물을 안전하게 마실 수 있게 한다. 이것은 우리 시스템의 유일한 특징으로, 하이랜드 II 저수지와 같은 대체 클리어웰은 작업을 위해 오프라인으로 전환되는 동안 설치될 것이다.

하이랜드 공원 저수지(Highland Park Reservoir) 시스템으로 송수하는 대구경 파이프를 재활성화한 라이징 메인 3 재건(Rising Main 3 Rehabilitation)은 올해 첫 번째로 완료된 물 신뢰성 계획 프로젝트였다. 프로젝트의 다음 단계에 대한 작업은 이미 진행 중이다. 지난해 말에 PWSA는 라이징 메인 4(Rising Main 4) 재건 및 교체 프로젝트를 건설하기 시작했으며, 올해에는 하이랜드 저수지 펌프장 및 라이징 메인(Rising Main) 교체 공사를 시작할 것이다. 이 프로젝트들이 완료되면 나머지 프로젝트의 공사가 순차적으로 시작된다. 여기에는 애스핀원(Aspinwall) 및 브루켄(Bruecken) 펌프장 개선, 랜퍼 라이징 메인 건설(Lanpher Rising Main Construction), 랜퍼 저수지(Lanpher Reservoir) 개선, 클리어웰 우회 프로젝트 및 클리어웰 교체가 포함된다.

PWSA Completes First Water Reliability Plan Project

Highland II Reservoir Returns to Service After $24 Million Upgrade

 

Pittsburgh, PA – This week, the Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority (PWSA) reinstated its 125 million-gallon covered reservoir after replacing the liner and cover. This nine-month project, the largest of its kind in North America in 2022, ensured the reliability and security of the reservoir, which will play a key role in the Water Reliability Plan.

Constructed between 1897 and 1903, the Highland II Reservoir supplies water to portions of Squirrel Hill, Downtown, South Side, and West End, making it a crucial part of our water distribution system. PWSA’s drained the reservoir, removed the previous materials, and installed a new liner, floating cover and supplemental equipment, like rainwater removal pumps. This work will add 25 more years of service to the structure and improve its reliability as other Water Reliability Plan projects take place. 

The Water Reliability Plan culminates with the complete restoration of the century old Clearwell. This structure, located at the Water Treatment Plant, puts treated water in contact with chlorine to kill any bacteria and pathogens in the water, making it safe to drink. Because this is a singular feature of our system, alternate clearwells, like the Highland II Reservoir, will be established while it is taken offline for work. 

The Rising Main 3 Rehabilitation, which revitalized a large diameter pipe that moves water into the Highland Park Reservoir system, was the first Water Reliability Plan project completed this year. Work is already underway on the next phase of projects. In late 2022, PWSA began constructing the Rising Main 4 Rehabilitation and Replacement project and in 2023 will begin constructing the Highland Reservoir Pump Station and Rising Main Replacement. As these projects come to completion, construction of the remaining projects will begin in sequential order. These include the Aspinwall and Bruecken Pump Station Improvements, the Lanpher Rising Main Construction, Lanpher Reservoir Improvements, Clearwell Bypass Project, and Clearwell Replacement.
