템즈워터가 영국의 수도인 런던 전역의 기반 시설에 대한 투자를 계속함에 따라 동런던에 있는 거대한 빅토리아 시대의 하수구가 업그레이드되고 있다.

영국 최대의 상하수도 회사인 템즈워터(Thames Water)는 북부 하수구(Northern Outfall Sewer)를 업그레이드하고 미래 세대를 위해 하수관이 탄력적인지 확인하기 위해 향후 3년 동안 7천만 파운드(약 153억 원)를 투자할 예정이다.

400만 명 이상의 사람들에게 서비스를 제공하는 이 하수도는 윅 레인(Wick Lane)에서 유럽에서 가장 큰 벡턴 하수처리장(Beckton Sewage treatment)까지 이어진다.

이 하수구는 빅토리아(Victorian) 시대인 1860년에서 1865년 사이에 건설되었으며, 각 하수구의 지름은 2.7m로 운송 밴(transit van)을 통과할 수 있을 만큼 충분히 크다.

하수는 초당 최대 2만 리터(20㎥)의 속도로 하수구를 통해 흐르며, 이는 올림픽 크기의 수영장을 2분 안에 채울 수 있다.

업그레이드가 진행되는 동안 세 개의 주요 위치에서 작업이 수행된다. 이것은 2023년 3월부터 스트랫포드 하이 스트리트 언더브리지(Stratford High Street Underbridge), 매너 로드 오버브리지(Manor Road Overbridge), 코퍼레이션 스트리트 오버브리지(Corporation Street Overbridge)에서 이루어지며 작업이 진행됨에 따라 템즈워터 웹사이트에서 추가 정보를 제공된다.

템즈워터는 향후 100년 동안 안정적인 서비스를 제공하고, 인구가 증가함에 따라 업그레이드의 일환으로 유리 강화 플라스틱으로 만든 하수관을 사용할 계획이다.

템즈워터의 리처드 스미스(Richard Smith) 프로젝트 관리자는 “빅토리아인들은 북부 배수구를 포함한 런던 전역에 수천 마일의 하수관을 건설했다”라면서 “이 놀라운 인프라의 관리자로서 우리는 하수구가 기후변화와 인구 증가의 압력에 탄력적으로 대처할 수 있도록 보장해야 하며 고객에게 신뢰할 수 있는 서비스를 계속 제공할 수 있다. 우리의 네트워크에 대한 이러한 업그레이드는 고객과 템즈강의 건강을 보호하는 데 도움이 될 것”이라고 말했다.

리처드 스미스는 이어 “북부 하수구(Northern Outfall Sewer)는 400만 명 이상의 런던 시민들이 배출한 하·페수를 벡턴(Beckton)의 유럽 최대 하수처리장으로 보내기 때문에, 우리는 하수관이 적어도 앞으로 100년 동안 이 중요한 서비스를 계속 제공할 수 있도록 노력하고 있다”고 덧붙였다.

베크턴 하수도(Beckton Sewage Works)는 40억 파운드(약 6조1천45억 원)가 투입된 런던의 새로운 슈퍼 하수도인 템즈 타이드웨이 터널(Thames Tideway Tunnel)의 핵심 부분을 형성하고 있다. 

2025년에 개통되면, 15마일 길이의 이 터널은 폭우 후 런던의 큰 하수구에서 나오는 ‘첫번째 홍수(first flush)’를 모두 포착하고, 평년에는 템즈강까지 배출량을 약 95% 줄일 수 있다.

Major ￡70million upgrade to Stratford's Victorian sewer system

A giant Victorian sewer in East London is being upgraded as Thames Water continues its investment in infrastructure across the capital. 

The UK’s largest water and wastewater company is investing ￡70million over the next three years to upgrade the Northern Outfall Sewer and ensure its pipes are resilient for future generations. 

The sewer, which serves over 4 million people, runs from Wick Lane to Beckton Sewage treatment works, the largest in Europe.   

The Victorian pipes were originally constructed between 1860 - 1865 and each sewer is 2.7metres in diameter ? large enough to drive a transit van through.  

Wastewater flows through the pipes at a rate of up to 20,000 litres per second, which could fill an Olympic size swimming pool in 2 minutes.   

Work will be carried out at three key locations during the upgrades. This will take place on Stratford High Street Underbridge, Manor Road Overbridge and Corporation Street Overbridge, starting from March 2023 and further information will be provided on the Thames Water website as the work progresses. 

The company will use pipes made of glass reinforced plastic as part of the upgrade which will help provide reliable services over the next 100 years and as the population of the capital increases. 

Richard Smith, Thames Water project manager, said: “The Victorians built thousands of miles of sewer pipes across London including the Northern Outfall Sewer. 

“As custodians of this incredible infrastructure we need to ensure our pipes are resilient to the pressures of climate change and population growth and we can continue to provide reliable services to our customers. This upgrade to our network will help protect customers and the health of the River Thames.  

“The Northern Outfall Sewer supplies Europe’s largest sewage works at Beckton, which treats the waste of more than four million Londoners, so we need to make sure the pipes continue providing this vital service for at least another 100 years.” 

Beckton Sewage Works forms a key part of London’s ￡4billion new super-sewer, the Thames Tideway Tunnel. When it opens in 2025, the 15-mile-long tunnel will capture all of the ‘first flush’ from the big London sewers after heavy rain and reduce discharges by around 95% in a typical year to the tidal River Thames.
