| Britain's Thames Water Names Chardavoyne as First U.S. President

[NEW YORK.] Thames Water Plc, one of the world's leading water and wastewater companies, today announced the appointment of David E. Chardavoyne as its first U.S. president.
A 21-year veteran of the water industry, Chardavoyne has previously been President of United Waterworks, Inc., the largest wholly owned subsidiary of United Water Resources, with businesses in
twelve states.
Chardavoyne, 51, will be based at Thames' recently opened New York area office and will focus on developing and expanding the firm's growing U.S. businesses. "We strongly believe that David has exactly the skills needed to help us move aggressively into the U.S. market," said Thames chief executive Bill Alexander. "We're committed to rapid expansion on several fronts, including successful bidding on projects, forming joint ventures where we see a good fit and acquiring existing firms that complement our strengths."
Commenting on his new role, Chardavoyne said; "Thames Water is not new to the United States. Our subsidiary products companies Ashbrook Corporation and F.B. Leopold Company Inc. have been here for over ten years and Thames Water will shortly commence operation of the US$350 million Super-aqueduct project in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I am looking forward to increasing our presence in North America, not only as a leader in products, but also in water and wastewater services and operations."
After earning a Master of Science degree from Cornell University and serving over three years overseas in the U.S. Air Force, Chardavoyne began his water industry career in 1978 with Citizens Utilities Company in Stamford, Conn., spending 15 years in a variety of management posts.
In his final position with the company, he reported directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer and was an integral part of Citizens' Strategic Leadership Team. He moved from Citizens to Jamaica Water Securities Corp. in 1992, and was president and chief operating officer, before joining United Waterworks in 1996.
Throughout his career, David has implemented state-of-the-art programs in corporate reorganization, profitability improvement, human resources and management practices. He also has significant acquisition and divestiture experience.
Thames Water is the UK's largest water and wastewater company, serving nearly 12 million residential and commercial customers in London and the Thames Valley. World-wide, the company serves over
21 million people.
The Company's pre-tax profits have grown steadily throughout the second half of the 1990s, rising from 304 million (US $486 million) in 1995 to 412 million (US $659 million) this year.
