Six Firms Seek to Manage Chattanooga Water System
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (BUSINESS WIRE) - The City of Chattanooga has received statements of qualification (SOQ) from six of the largest firms in the water industry in response to the city's request for qualifications from private companies interested in winning the competitively bid contract for operation, maintenance and management of the Chattanooga water system.
The Chattanooga water system is currently owned and operated by the American Water Works Company, Inc. The City of Chattanooga has announced its intention to acquire the assets of the water system through a negotiated purchase or through exercise of the power of eminent domain. Chattanooga's nine-member City Council has unanimously approved the acquisition of the system assets and has appropriated adequate funds for consultants and legal fees associated with the acquisition. The City's plan calls for competitive selection of a private contractor to operate the system.

"I am extremely pleased that these companies--all of whom are giants in the water industry--have responded to the opportunity to manage and operate our water system," said Mayor Jon Kinsey. "Each of the companies feel that there are substantial savings to be found within the management of our water system. By introducing private sector competition to the management of the water system, we feel the result will be lower rates and greater efficiency," the Mayor said.

The six companies are:

Aqua Alliance, Atlanta, Georgia
US Filter/AquaSource (dba: Chattanooga Water Co.,) Chattanooga, TN
OMI, Greenwood Village, Colorado
Philip/Azurix Partnership, Short Hills, New Jersey
United Water Services, Harrington Park, New Jersey
U.S. Water, Indianapolis, Indiana
The city plans to select an operator later this summer.
