| Mark Strand Appointed Vice President of Government Programs for American Water Works
VOORHEES, N.J., May 2, 2001 - American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE:AWK) President and Chief Executive Officer, J. James Barr, announced today that Mark Strand has joined the Company as Vice President of Government Programs.
Mr. Strand has more than 19 years of experience in the United States House of Representatives. Most recently, he served as Chief of Staff for Representative Jim Talent of Missouri and was Staff Director of the House Committee on Small Business. Prior experience also includes serving as Chief of Staff for Representative Bill Lowery of California (‘91-‘93) and Representative Stan Parris of Virginia (‘87-‘91). Mr. Strand started his career as Legislative Director to Representative Mark Siljander of Michigan (‘82-‘87).
"Mark’s extensive experience in the legislative environment will be extremely valuable as we continue to foster national and local relationships," said Mr. Barr. "In addition, he will be key in our ability to follow, and contribute to, the development of industry-related legislation."
Throughout his career, Mr. Strand has held numerous legislative committee positions including Executive Director of the Taxpayers Protection Caucus and Fiscal and Budget Affairs Advisor for the American Legislative Council (ALEC). An accomplished writer and public presenter, he holds a B.S. in political science and history from the University of New York, Regents College.
