아랍에미레이트(UAE) 두바이수전력청(DEWA)이 담수화수용 대수층 저장·복구(ASR ; Aquifer Storage and Recovery ) 1단계 사업 공사를 완료하고 운영 및 시험 단계에 돌입했다.

WAM(에미레이트통신) 보고서에 따르면, ASR 프로젝트는 완료되면 6천만  MIG의 물을 저장할 수 있다. 전략비축기지로 2025년까지 완공될 예정으로 식수 저장 및 비상시 회수 등을 위한 세계 최대 ASR이 될 전망이다.

보고서는 이 프로젝트는 저장된 물의 품질을 보장하면서 비상시 90일 동안 50 MIGD의 추가 식수 전략적 비축량으로 에미레이트(emirate)에 보호하는 데 도움이 될 것이라고 밝혔다.

알 타이어 CEO는 이어 “우리는 두바이의 부통령이자 총리인 셰이크 모하메드 빈 라시드 알 막툼(Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum) 국왕이 최고 수준의 가용성, 신뢰성, 효율성 및 안전 기준에 따라 두바이에 전력과 수도의 최신 통합적이고 탄력적인 인프라를 제공한다는 비전을 지지한다”고 덧붙였다.

ASR 프로젝트는 두바이에서 물의 지속 가능한 생산을 증가시킨다. 그것은 최신 역삼투압 기술을 사용하여 바닷물을 담수화하기 위해 깨끗한 태양 에너지를 사용한다. 여분의 물은 대수층에 저장되었다가 필요할 때 물망으로 다시 펌핑된다.

그는 특히 “이를 통해 모든 시민, 주민 및 방문객이 두바이의 다양한 지역에 걸쳐 급성장하는 물 수요를 충족할 수 있다”라면서 “ASR 프로젝트 외에도 DEWA는 알 나칼리(Al Nakhali)에 있는 120개의 MIG 저수조와 알 루사일(Al Lusaily)에 있는 또 다른 60개의 MIG 저수조를 건설하고 있다”고 강조했다.

DEWA의 담수화수 생산능력은 해수역삼투압(SWRO ; Sea Water Reverse Osmosis) 기술을 이용한 63 MIGD를 포함해 현재 490 MIGD(196만㎥)다. 보고서는 SWRO가 2030년까지 생산능력을 303 MIGD로 확대해 2030년까지 730 MIGD의 담수화 생산능력을 늘릴 것이라고 결론지었다.

DEWA completes construction of the first stage of the Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) strategic project

Authority has started operations and testing on vital project that will ensure Dubai has an additional source of potable water strategic reserve

The new project supports DEWA’s efforts to increase the storage capacity of Dubai to reach 7212 MIG in 2025 when compared to the present storage capacity of 822 MIG

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has completed construction of the first stage of the Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) project for desalinated water and has started the operations and testing stage.

According to a WAM report, the ASR project will be able to store up to 6,000 million imperial gallons of water once completed. It is scheduled to be finished by 2025 as a strategic reserve and will be the largest ASR of its kind in the world for the storage of potable water and retrieval in case of emergency.

The project will help secure the emirate with an additional source of potable water strategic reserve of 50MIGD for 90 days in emergencies, while ensuring the quality of the stored water, the report said.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dewa, said the new project supports DEWA’s efforts to increase the storage capacity of Dubai to reach 7,212 MIG in 2025 when compared to the present storage capacity of 822 MIG.

“We support the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to provide a state-of-the-art, integrated, and resilient infrastructure of electricity and water in Dubai according to the highest standards of availability, reliability, efficiency and safety.

The ASR project increases the sustainable production of water in Dubai. It uses clean solar power to desalinate seawater using the latest Reverse Osmosis (RO) technologies. Excess water is stored in aquifers and pumped back into the water network when needed.

The cost of this innovative integrated model is less than the cost of traditional reservoirs, and is a sustainable, eco-friendly, economical solution. It also emphasises Dubai’s ability to anticipate and shape the future, Al Tayer said.

“This helps to ensure meeting the rapidly growing demand for water across different areas in Dubai for all citizens, residents and visitors. Besides the ASR project, DEWA is working on a 120 MIG reservoir in Al Nakhali and another 60 MIG reservoir in Al Lusaily,” he added.

The production capacity of desalinated water of DEWA is currently 490 MIGD, including 63MIGD using Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) technology. By 2030, SWRO will help expand its production capacity to 303 MIGD, increasing it to 730 MIGD of desalinated water by 2030, the report concluded.
