James McInerney of Norwalk Appointed BHC Chairman
BUSINESS WIRE(2000³â 2¿ù7ÀÏ)
[BRIDGEPORT, Conn.]
James S. McInerney has been appointed Chairman of Aquarion's BHC Company water utility subsidiary, Aquarion President and Chief Executive Officer Richard K. Schmidt announced today. The appointment is effective April 1.

Aquarion Company Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Janet M. Hansen has been appointed to succeed McInerney as BHC president and chief executive officer and will assume the operating responsibilities for BHC.

McInerney will retain his current title and responsibilities as a senior vice president of Aquarion. The promotions are the first to be announced following the January 7, 2000 acquisition of Aquarion by the Kelda Group, plc, of Leeds, England.

McInerney will be primarily responsible for national and international external relations as ambassador and legislative liaison for Aquarion and BHC on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.
The Norwalk resident joined BHC's Stamford Water Company (SWC) in 1970 and subsequently assumed positions of increasing responsibility before becoming SWC President from 1977 to 1990. He was named BHC's executive vice president and chief operating officer in 1990, president and chief operating officer in 1991, Aquarion's senior vice president of utilities in 1992 and BHC's chief executive officer in 1995.

As president and CEO, McInerney brought BHC through the largest series of capital projects in the company's 143-year history; doubling its asset base by building six water filtration facilities. Three of the water treatment plants feature a highly reliable, state-of-the-art filtration technology called Dissolved Air Flotation.
"As one who has great expertise in the water supply industry, it is entirely fitting that Jim assume the role of BHC's chairman," Schmidt said. "The company will benefit greatly from his considerable talents and competence as he promotes a greater understanding of issues that are critical to the continued success and advancement of BHC and the industry as a whole."

McInerney said: "The widespread consolidation, new, tougher public health regulations and rapidly changing technology make this an exciting time for the public drinking water supply industry. I look forward to representing BHC on the national and international front during this period."

He holds a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Manhattan College and completed the Harvard University Advanced Management Program. He is a Trustee of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) Research Foundation and Chairs the AWWA Water Utility Council. He also serves as a Director of the Junior Achievement business preparation program and the Housatonic Valley Association.

Aquarion's principal business is public water supply. Through its BHC and Sea Cliff Water Company subsidiaries, it is one of the 10 largest investor-owned water utilities in the U.S. and serves 141,000 customers, or a population of more than 500,000, in 30 Connecticut and Long Island, NY communities.

Other businesses include contract management of municipal water systems and timber processing.
Kelda, Aquarion's parent, has annual revenues of $1.1 billion and operates in the United Kingdom and Europe. Its water and sewerage services business, Yorkshire Water Services, provides drinking water to approximately 1.9 million customers, or a population of 4.5 million, in the County of Yorkshire, England. It is one of the 10 largest water companies in the world. Yorkshire Water Services supplies its customers with 350 million of gallons of water daily, treated at 112 water treatment facilities.
