[캐나다] 노바스코샤, 하·폐수에  '코로나19'  존재 유무 연구 수행

캐나다 노바스코샤연구원(Research Nova Scotia ; RNS)의 연구원들은 인간 하·폐수에 '코로나19(COVID-19)'를 유발하는 바이러스의 존재를 탐지하는 프로젝트를 시작하고 있으며, 바이러스의 잠재적인 존재를 빠르게 그리고 확산하기 전에 식별하는 것을 돕고 있다.

노바스코샤연구원(RNS)의 연구팀은 최근 시범연구 결과를 토대로 도내 전 지역에서 표본 채취에 나섰다. 소재지는 연구팀이 주 보건당국 및 노바스코샤 보건청(NSHA ; Nova Scotia Health Authority)과 연계해 선정했다.

달하우시대학교(Dalhousie University)의 그레이엄 가뇽(Graham Gagnon) 박사는 "우리는 함께 지방 차원에서 '사스-CoV-2'를 조기에 정확하게 탐지할 수 있는 하·폐수 감시 프로그램을 개발 중에 있으며, 이는 궁극적으로 예방적이고 예방적인  '코로나19(COVID-19)' 건강 및 경제 대응 조치를 가능하게 할 수 있다"고 말했다.

 '코로나19(COVID-19)'가 호흡기 질환임에도 불구하고  '코로나19(COVID-19)'를 유발하는 바이러스의 유전 물질이 사람의 하·폐수에서 발견되었다. 이 바이러스는 '사스-CoV-2'로 호흡기관보다 위장관에서 더 오래 생존한다.

이와 같이, 하·폐수는 누군가가 증상을 일으키기 전, 양성 검사 결과를 받기 전, 또는 바이러스의 무증상 매개체이기 전에 바이러스의 존재를 확인하는 데 사용될 수 있다.

노바스코샤연구원(RNS)는 지난 3월부터 RNS가 후원한 19개 코로나 관련 연구 프로젝트 중 하나인 이 프로젝트의 방향, 범위 및 규모를 구체화하기 위해 연구팀을 소집했다.

프로젝트 비용은 85만2천 달러로 추산되며 직원, 장비, 여행, 자재 및 테스트를 포함한다. 이 프로젝트에 대한 지방 기금은 '노바스코샤 코로나19 대응위원회(The Nova Scotia COVID-19 Response Council)'에 대한 초기 5천만 달러 기부로부터 할당되었다.

노바스코샤연구원(RNS)의 스테판 레슬리(Stefan Leslie) CEO는 "이번 연구 프로젝트는 초기  '코로나19(COVID-19)' 검출 시스템을 개발해야 하는 필요성에 의해 추진되었다"라고 말했다.

연구책임자인 달하우시 대학의 가뇽(Gagnon) 박사와 아미나 스토다트(Amina Stoddart) 박사는 핼리팩스 워터(Halifax Water), 아카디아대학(Acadia University), 케이프 브레튼 대학(Cape Breton University), 세인트루이스 프랜시스 자비어 대학교(St. Francis Xavier University) 등의 18명으로 구성된 이 프로젝트 팀에는 다른 과학자, 연구원, 대학원 연구 보조자 및 학생들이 포함되어 있다.

사용된 기술은 루민울트라 테크놀로지스(LuminUltra Technologies Ltd.)의  '코로나19(COVID-19)'  하·폐수 시험 솔루션으로, 달하우시대학(Dalhousie University)과 협력하여 개발되었다.

Research Project To Track Presence Of COVID-19 In Nova Scotia Wastewater

Halifax, NS - Researchers across Nova Scotia are launching a project aimed at detecting the presence of the virus that causes COVID-19 in human wastewater, helping to identify the potential presence of the virus quickly and before it can spread.

Building on the recent results of a pilot study, the research team has begun to collect samples in locations throughout the province. Locations have been selected by the research team in conjunction with provincial public health officials and the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA).

“Together we are working to develop a wastewater surveillance program on a provincial scale that will provide early and accurate detection of SARS-CoV-2, which could ultimately enable proactive and preventative COVID-19 health and economic response measures,” says lead researcher Dr. Graham Gagnon of Dalhousie University.

Although COVID-19 is a respiratory illness, the genetic material of the virus that causes COVID-19 has been found in human wastewater. This virus ? SARS-CoV-2 ? survives longer in the gastrointestinal tract than in the respiratory tract.

As such, wastewater may be used to determine the presence of the virus either before someone develops symptoms, receives a positive test result or is an asymptomatic carrier of the virus.

Research Nova Scotia (RNS) convened the research team to help shape the direction, scope and scale of this project, one of 19 COVID-related research projects funded by RNS since March.

The project cost is estimated at $852,000 and includes staff, equipment, travel, materials and testing. Provincial funding for the project has been allocated from the initial $50-million contribution to the Nova Scotia COVID-19 Response Council.

“This research project was driven by the need to develop early COVID detection systems,” says Stefan Leslie, CEO of Research Nova Scotia.

“As a funder and partner, we were pleased to work with some of the province’s leading researchers to help shape this project for the broadest possible benefit to Nova Scotians.”

Lead researchers, Dr. Gagnon and Dr. Amina Stoddart of Dalhousie University, are joined by co-investigators at Halifax Water, Acadia University, Cape Breton University and St. Francis Xavier University. The 18-member project team includes other scientists, researchers, graduate research assistants and students.

The technology used is LuminUltra’s COVID-19 wastewater testing solution, which was developed in partnership with Dalhousie University.

- Wastewater sample collection will take place in Halifax, Dartmouth, Wolfville, and other municipal sites through to July 2021

- Confirmed locations include an essential worker building on Halifax Stanfield property and municipal wastewater treatment facilities. Sites will also include three locations to be selected in conjunction with Public Health and NSHA. Locations could include campuses and student residences at Dalhousie, Acadia, St. FX and CBU universities
