[미국] 마이크로비, 서부 최초 사이드스트림 하수처리 시스템 공개

마이크로비(Microvi)가 하루 1200만 갤런 처리용량의 Oro Loma Sanitary District(이하 OLSD)/Castro Valley 수질오염 제어시설에 샌프란시스코만의 암모니아 제거를 위한 서부 지역 최초 사이드스트림(Sidestream) 하수처리 시스템을 공개했다.

마이크로비는 OLSD와 HDR Inc.(컨설팅 엔지니어) 및 EKI Environment and Water Inc.(프로젝트 설계 엔지니어)와 협력해 비용효율적이고 사용하기 쉬운 자사 MNE 솔루션을 제공함으로써 샌프란시스코만의 높은 영양소 부하 문제를 해결할 계획이라고 지난 12월 10일 밝혔다.

샌프란시스코만은 미국 내에서 질소(N) 부하량이 가장 높은 지역이다. 샌프란시스코만 지역(San Francisco Bay Area) 하수처리 시설을 질소 처리용으로 개조하는 데 필요한 자본 비용은 80억 달러 이상으로 추산된다.

영양염류 제거를 위한 마이크로비의 MNE 기술은 생물학적 슬러지를 생성하지 않고 현장에서 사용할 수 있는 최소 수준의 폭기를 사용하는 천연 공정을 통해 높은 수준의 암모니아를 아질산염 및 질산염으로 변환해준다.

시스템은 지난 4월 말 OLSD의 플랜트에 처음 설치되어 시운전됐다. 이후 이 기술은 샌프란시스코만으로 OLSD의 질소 배출량을 연간 최대 40만파운드(lbs.)까지 줄이는 설계 기준을 충족하면서 탄력적인 작동을 입증했다.

마이크로비 CEO인 파테메 시라지(Dr. Fatemeh Shirazi) 박사는 “우리 MNE 기술이 성공적으로 구현되어 기존 솔루션에 비해 훨씬 적은 비용으로 질소 오염을 줄인 것을 기쁘게 생각한다”면서 “미국 서부에 들어선 이 최초의 시설은 수백만 파운드의 질소 배출을 방지함으로써 샌프란시스코만을 보존할 것이다”라고 말했다.

OLSD의 제이슨 와너(Jason Warner) 제너럴 매니저는 “프로젝트 팀은 기존 탱크와 용도를 변경한 송풍기를 사용해 미니멀리스트 프로세스를 설계하기 위해 함께했다. 마이크로비 공정의 단순성과 운영 팀이 훌륭한 처리 결과를 달성했다는 증거이다”라고 말했다.

Grand Opening of the 1st Full-Scale Sidestream Wastewater Treatment System in the U.S. Western Region

Microvi announces the grand opening of the latest implementation of its MNE technology for ammonia removal in the San Francisco Bay Area at the 12 million gallon per day Oro Loma Sanitary District (OLSD)/Castro Valley Water Pollution Control Facility. The San Francisco Bay receives some of the highest nitrogen loading of any estuary in the United States. Estimated capital costs to retrofit San Francisco Bay Areawastewater treatment facilities to treat nitrogen is estimated at over $8 billion.

Microvi's MNE technology for nutrient removal converts high levels of ammonia to nitrite and nitrate through a proprietary natural process that produces no biological sludge and uses only a minimal level of aeration available at the site.

Microvi and OLSD have partnered with HDR Inc. (consulting engineer) and EKI Environment and Water Inc. (project design engineer) to bring this robust, cost-effective, and easy-to-use solution to address the urgent issue of high nutrient loading in the San Francisco Bay. This first-of-its-kind installation was commissioned at OLSD's plant in late April 2021. The technology has since demonstrated rapid startup and resilient operation while meeting the design criteria of reducing OLSD's nitrogen discharge to the San Francisco Bay by up to 400,000 pounds (lbs.) per year.
