선도적인 글로벌 물기술 회사인 자일럼(Xylem)의 싱가포르 현지 법인인 자일럼 싱가포르(Xylem Water Solutions Singapore Pte Ltd)와 지속가능한 하·폐수 처리 솔루션을 배치하는 데 중점을 둔 선도 회사인 그로스웬 테크놀로지스(Gross-Wen Technologies Inc, GWT)는 새로운 공동 연구개발(R&D) 프로젝트를 위한 양해각서를 체결했다고 발표했다. 이 프로젝트는 GWT의 기존 회전 조류 생물막(RAB®) 기술의 개발에 초점을 맞출 것이다. 이 기술은 물 유틸리티의 탄소 발자국을 줄이면서 영양소 회수를 촉진하는 조류 기반 폐수 처리 솔루션이다.

이 프로젝트는 특히 탄소 발자국 감소와 영양 회복을 위해 GWT의 혐기성 다이제스트(AD) 유출물 처리가 특징이다다. 여기에는 조류에 의한 대기 중 CO2 포집, 저에너지 질소 및 인 회수, 농축된 AD 하·폐수로부터의 아산화질소 배출 감소 등이 포함된다. 이 과정에서 생산되는 녹조는 수확되어 비료, 바이오 플라스틱, 바이오 연료를 만드는데 사용될 것이다.

프로젝트의 일환으로, 자일럼 싱가포르 기술 허브의 수석 개발 엔지니어인 루오 롱모(Luo Rongmo) 박사와 사장 겸 CEO인 마틴 그로스(Martin Gross) 박사가 이끄는 R&D 팀은 최대 24만7천 싱가포르 달러를 지원 받아 자일름의 싱가포르 시설에 소규모 RAB® 시스템을 구현한다. 만약 성공한다면, 이것은 싱가포르의 국립 수도청인 PUB를 위한 본격적인 시스템으로 시범 운영된다.

이 프로젝트는 PUB의 탄소 제로 그랜드 챌린지의 제안 단계 수상자 중 하나였으며, 이 프로젝트는 PUB가 2050년까지 순 제로 배출을 달성하고 전 세계 수도 시설로 확장할 수 있도록 지원할 수 있는 혁신적인 솔루션을 장려하고자 합니다. 개념 증명 단계에서 성공하면 자일름 싱가포르는 싱가포르의 PUB 시설에서 ~1kton 규모의 솔루션을 시연하기 위해 250만 싱가포르 달러를 추가로 받을 수 있다.

Xylem Singapore and Gross-Wen Technologies to collaborate on boosting sustainability and efficiency of algae-based wastewater treatment tech

Partnership will focus on scaling the development of the revolving algal biofilm technology, winner of Proposal Phase of PUB’s Carbon Zero Grand Challenge

 

Xylem Water Solutions Singapore Pte Ltd, the local entity of Xylem Inc, a leading global water technology company, and Gross-Wen Technologies Inc. (GWT), a leading company focused on deploying environmentally-sustainable wastewater treatment solutions, today announced a Memorandum of Understanding for a new joint research and development (R&D) project to deploy algae-based wastewater treatment solutions in Singapore. The project will focus on the development of GWT’s existing revolving algal biofilm (RAB®) technology, an algae-based wastewater treatment solution that promotes nutrient recovery while reducing the carbon footprint of water utilities. 

The project will specifically feature GWT’s algae-based treatment of anaerobic digestor (AD) effluent for carbon footprint reduction and nutrient recovery. This includes atmospheric CO2 capture by algae, low-energy nitrogen and phosphorus recovery, and reduced nitrous oxide emissions from the concentrated AD effluent. The algae produced during the process will be harvested and used to make fertilizers, bioplastics and biofuels. 

As part of the project, the R&D team led by Dr Luo Rongmo, Senior Development Engineer, Xylem Singapore Technology Hub, and Dr Martin Gross, President and CEO, GWT, is awarded up to S$247,000 to implement a small-scale RAB® system at Xylem’s Singapore facility during this Proof of Concept Phase of the Carbon Zero Grand Challenge. If successful, this will be piloted in a full-scale system for PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency. 

Dr Luo Rongmo, Senior Development Engineer, Xylem Singapore Technology Hub, said, “We are pleased to be partnering with Gross-Wen Technologies and combining our strengths in the industry to develop a sustainable wastewater treatment process to help Singapore and water utilities achieve net zero emissions.”

Dr Martin Gross, President and CEO, GWT, said, “Our partnership with Xylem in Singapore is an exciting step forward in the global deployment of GWT's RAB® treatment technology. Our R&D project with PUB will serve as a showcase for how algae treatment can be leveraged to decarbonize the wastewater treatment industry.”

The project was one of the Proposal Phase winners of PUB’s Carbon Zero Grand Challenge, which seeks to incentivize innovative solutions that can help PUB achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and scale to water facilities around the globe. If successful in the Proof of Concept Phase, Xylem Singapore could be awarded a further S$2.5 million to demonstrate a ~1 kiloton-scale version of their solution at a PUB facility in Singapore.
