새벽 2시이고 평화롭게 조용하다. 여러분이 잠을 잘 때, 여러분의 집 잔디 밑에 묻혀 있는 물줄기의 작은 누수가 큰 파손이 되기 전에 빠르게 발견된다. 물의 흐름을 적극적으로 듣는 강력한 기술 덕분이다.

FDMA(Findlay Township Municip Authority ; 핀들레이시 수도국)는 자일럼(Xylem) 브랜드인 센서스(Sensus)의 이 스마트 워터 기술(smart water technology)이 어떻게 찾기 어려운 누수를 감지하고 알려지지 않은 물 손실을 해결하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있는지를 인식했다.

펜실베이니아주 앨러게니 카운티(Allegheny County) 수도사업자(utility)는 원격으로 관리되는 음향 모니터링(acoustic monitoring) 기능을 전체 물 분배 시스템에 추가했다. 센서스 분석 음향모니터링(Sensus Analytics Acoustic Monitoring) 애플리케이션은 페르말로그(Permalog®)+ 기술을 플렉스넷(FlexNet®) 통신 네트워크 및 스마트포인트(SmartPoints)와 결합하여 유통 라인을 모니터링하고 누출을 위치를 파악한다.

음향 센서는 주변 배경 소음이 가장 낮은 야간에 음파를 사용하여 분배 시스템을 청취한다. 그런 다음 애플리케이션은 FlexNet을 통해 수도관 흐름 상태에 대한 보고서를 기관에 전송한다. 기관은 데이터를 자동으로 집계하고 분석한다. 이 기술을 통해 핀들레이 타운십(Findlay Township)은 누수가 감지되면 사무실에서 적시에 경보를 받을 수 있다.

음향 기술은 기술자들이 빗물 배수구 근처나 광산 갱도에서 지표면 아래의 문제를 찾기 어려운 것을 포함하여 주요 브레이크가 되기 전에 원격으로 누출 지점을 찾아낼 수 있게 해준다.

현장에서 현장으로 로거를 들어 올리고 이동한 후 사무실로 돌아와 판독을 하고 매일 현장으로 돌아가 재배치를 하는 시간이 많이 소요되던 시절은 지났다.

이제 자기적으로 부착된 로거는 영구적인 위치에 있으며 기술자들은 매일 아침 업무용 노트북에서 전체 분배 시스템을 확인한다. 이제 대부분의 수리작업을 표준 업무시간 내에 처리할 수 있으므로 직원의 초과 근무시간이 월 200시간에서 70시간 미만으로 크게 줄어든다.

특히, 응답시간이 빨라지고 서비스가 개선됨에 따라 고객 기반도 더욱 만족스러한다. 핀들레이 타운십의 주민들은 종종 그들이 발견된 날에 누출을 처리한다.

오르시니 총괄관리자는 “우리 기술자 중 한 명이 개인 주택의 누수를 정확히 지적했다”라면서 “그는 문을 두드리며 집주인에게 누수 사실을 알렸다. 집주인은 충격을 받고 ‘어떻게 그걸 알아?’라고 물었다. 우리 기술자들은 고객에게 향상된 서비스를 제공하기 위해 사용 가능한 모든 도구를 사용하고 있다. 시스템이 작동한다”라고 강조했다.

핀들레이 타운십의 스마트 시스템은 또한 지난 10년간 음향 모니터링과 함께 스마트 계량기가 시행된 이후 약 40%에서 5%로 감소한 설명되지 않은 물손실을 돕는다.

오르시니 총괄관리자는 “스마트 워터 기술에 대한 당국의 투자가 물 손실에 대해 연간 10만 달러를 절약하여 노동 효율성을 높이고 고객에게 매우 귀중한 지원을 제공한 것으로 정말로 결실을 맺었다”고 덧붙였다.

Sensus Analytics Acoustic Monitoring Application Elevates Utility’s Smart Water System

It’s 2 am and peacefully quiet. As you sleep, a tiny leak in a water line embedded underneath your home’s lawn is swiftly identified before it becomes a major break. This is thanks to powerful technology that actively listens to water flow. 

Findlay Township Municipal Authority (FTMA) recognized how this smart water technology from Sensus, a Xylem brand could detect hard-to-find leaks and help tackle unaccounted water loss.

The Allegheny County, Pennsylvania utility added remotely managed acoustic monitoring capabilities to their entire water distribution system. The Sensus Analytics Acoustic Monitoring application combines Permalog®+ technology with the FlexNet® communication network and SmartPoints® to monitor distribution lines and localize leaks.

Acoustic sensors use soundwaves to listen to the distribution system during the night when ambient background noise is at its lowest. The application then sends reports to the authority on pipeline flow conditions via FlexNet, which automatically aggregates and analyzes the data. This technology makes it possible for Findlay Township to receive timely alerts in the office when a leak is detected.

“We needed acoustic monitoring across our entire system, not only problem areas.” said Jason Orsini, Findlay Township Municipal Authority’s General Manager. “This technology allows us to know of any abnormalities within our 75 miles of waterline every day, whereas before with a lift and shift system we may not know of a leak for anywhere up to 35 days.”

Acoustic technology allows technicians to pinpoint leaks remotely before they become major breaks including hard to find issues below the surface near storm drains and even in mine shafts. 

Gone were the time-intensive days of lifting and shifting loggers from site to site, then returning to the office for readings and back to the field for redeployment on a daily basis. 

Now the magnetically attached loggers remain in a permanent spot and technicians check on the entire distribution system from their work laptops each morning. Most repairs can now be handled within standard business hours, significantly decreasing employee overtime from 200 monthly hours to less than 70.

With swifter response times and better service also comes a more satisfied customer base. Findlay Township residents often have leaks addressed the same day they are detected.

“One of our technicians pinpointed a leak to a private home,” said Orsini. “He knocked on the door and told the homeowner about the leak. The homeowner was shocked and asked, ‘how do you know that?’ Our technicians are using all available tools to provide our customers with improved service. The system works!”

Findlay Township’s smart system also helps with unaccounted water loss which has decreased from approximately 40 percent to five percent since the implementation of smart meters along with acoustic monitoring in the past decade. 

Orsini adds that the authority’s investment in smart water technology has really paid off saving $100,000 annually on water loss, increasing labor efficiencies and providing invaluable support for customers.

“I would very much recommend the acoustic monitoring system to other townships,” said Orsini. “I would swear by it as we know the results are real. With the right people in place to interpret the data and track the leaks, we better serve our customers.”
