EVOQUA TO SUPPLY BOILER FEEDWATER MAKEUP SYSTEM AT LA SANITATION'S HYPERION WATER RECLAMATION PLANT

Evoqua Water Technologies today announced it has been chosen by energy developer DCO Energy, LLC to provide equipment and services for a new biogas cogeneration project for LA Sanitation's Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant in Los Angeles, Calif.

As the City's primary water reclamation plant, Hyperion is one of the largest treatment facilities in the world. It has been operating since 1925 and has a capacity of 450 million gallons per day (mgd), up to 800 mgd during wet weather.

The biogas cogeneration plant, scheduled for completion in late 2016, is being built by Constellation, a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation, and will provide 100% of the steam and electrical power for the Hyperion facility. Constellation will also operate the cogeneration plant under a 20-year contract.

The plant is expected to generate more than 173 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year and supply up to 70,000 pounds per hour of steam, using the methane captured through Hyperion¡¯s sewage treatment process as its fuel source.

Evoqua was selected to provide a boiler feedwater makeup system and a condensate polishing system for the operation. The feedwater makeup system will use Evoqua's Vantage¢ç PTI multimedia pretreatment system; double-pass Vantage Membrane Series M286 Reverse Osmosis systems; VFD pumps, and ion exchange polishing resin using customized Evoqua FlexMate¢âtanks.

Both the feedwater makeup and condensate polishing processes will take advantage of Evoqua off-site Service Deionization and condensate polishing services to reduce capital costs and on-site chemical storage.

"This project will help LA Sanitation meet a commitment to reduce its carbon footprint by operating the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant on 100% renewable energy," said Bill Malone of Evoqua's Equipment Solutions segment. "We're proud to be part of an effort that will make generating sustainable energy a cleaner and more efficient process."

Evoqua is already a key contributor to water treatment and reclamation in California and the Los Angeles area. Evoqua is a vital part of the award-winning Orange County Water District¡¯s pioneering Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS) which takes secondary treated wastewater formerly discharged into the ocean to now replenish the local aquifer and protect groundwater from seawater intrusion.

The OCWD has expanded its use of Evoqua¡¯s Memcor¢ç CS membrane modules to eliminate suspended solids, bacteria and other harmful contaminants from the feed stream to deliver high quality effluent to the GWRS reverse osmosis system.

Evoqua also supplies its microfiltration packaged system to the Terminal Island Water Reclamation Plant Advanced Water Treatment Facility in San Pedro, Los Angeles County, one of the major operations in the country and the third Los Angeles water reclamation plant to produce reclaimed water for indirect potable reuse.

In addition, Evoqua¡¯s recently acquired Neptune Benson business¡¯ newly developed electrode technology that has exceeded expectations during potable water reuse demonstration testing in California. Neptune Benson, in collaboration with Carollo Engineers, took part in the nine-month Ventura Water Pure project which is aimed to increase recycled water supply to meet long-term demands in this California community. The objective of the overall study is to draw attention to the value of potable reuse as a renewable resource that can provide a cost-effective and sustainable source of high quality water.
