Report shows trace amounts of pharmaceutical drugs turning up in water supply
LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — A report that recently came out showed that trace amounts of pharmaceutical drugs are showing up in the water supply in Long Island, N.Y., according to Long Island News.
The Citizens Campaign for the Environment, a non-profit, non-partisan advocacy organization, took a look at 61 different wells and gathered 70 samples of drinking water.
They found that 28 of the samples contained a “low, but measurable amount of pharmaceutically active compounds.”
Studies have revealed that our filtration system does not filter out pharmaceuticals, and instead they are returned to local aquifers to be mixed into drinking water.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) recommend drug take-back programs for people to bring any leftover medications.
While flushing medications has attributed to the presence of pharmaceuticals emerging in our water supplies, some experts add that natural disposal from patients and other prescription users is also a major contributor to this trend.
