고해상도 실시간 수질감시 데이터에 대한 수요가 증가하면서 미티어 커뮤니케이션즈사(Meteor Communications Ltd.)는 영국 바싱스토크(Basingstoke) 인근의 전용 수질서비스 허브(Water Quality Services Hub)에 투자하게 되었다.

이 새로운 자원은 현재 강에서 운영되고 있으며 영국 전역의 수처리 작업에서 500개 이상의 ESNET 모니터링 시스템((Environmental Sensor NETwork monitoring systems)을 지원하기 위해 개발되었다.

최근 몇 년 동안 미티어 커뮤니케이션즈사(Meteor Communications Ltd.)은 정부기관 및 수자원기업과 협력하여 신속한 배치가 가능하고 전력이나 통신 인프라가 필요 없는 ESNET(Environmental Sensor NETwork) 자율 수질감시 시스템을 개발하고 있다.

 

 

내장된 통신 및 다중 파라미터(multiparameter) 기능을 갖춘 모듈식 ESNET 시스템은 구축 후 몇 분 이내에 강력한 실시간 수질 데이터를 제공한다.

이 시스템은 완전한 휴대용 모니터링 스테이션 또는 반영구 또는 고정 설치를 위한 키오스크 펌프 시스템(kiosk pumped system)의 일부로 제공된다. ESNET 시스템은 전면 구매가 가능하지만, 미티어(Meteor)는 시장에 새롭고 독특한 솔루션을 제공하기로 전략적 결정을 내렸다.

매트 딥스(Matt Dibbs) 상무는 "많은 고객들에게 수질감시 요건은 일시적이거나 간헐적인 것으로 환경영향평가를 실시하거나 하·폐수처리 작업을 특성화하거나 최적화하거나 조사 또는 연구 프로젝트의 일환으로 실시된다"고 설명했다.

따라서 그들이 장비를 구입하고 모니터링 네트워크 운영에 필요한 관련 자원에 투자하는 것은 이치에 맞지 않았다.

WQaaS 계약에 따라, 미티어 커뮤니케이션즈사(Meteor Communications Ltd.)는 현장에 필요한 파라미터를 측정하고 MeteorCloud(미티어클라우드) 보안 웹 포털을 통한 데이터 액세스를 통해 ESNET 스테이션을 설치한다.

이 서비스는 예정된 현장 방문, 미티어연구소의 교정, 데이터 표시/보급을 포함한 데이터 수집의 모든 측면을 다룬다.

매달 고정된 비용이 있는 고객은 자본 지출이 없고 교정 또는 유지보수를 위해 현장 방문을 수행할 필요가 없다.

각 ESNET 스테이션은 멀티파라미터 소드(multiparameter sonde)를 채용하여 수질측정을 하고 있으며, 월별 현장방문을 통해 판독의 정확성이 보장되며, 이 기간 동안 유성팀원이 관측소를 점검하고 소드를 교환한다.

형적으로 소드(sonde)에는 용존산소, 온도, pH, 전도도, 탁도, 암모늄, 청녹조, 엽록소 등의 파라미터를 측정하는 센서가 탑재된다. 4주마다 배치한 후, 손드는 서비스와 교정을 위해 미티어 WQS 허브로 반환된다.

Meteor Water Quality Services Hub Goes Live

 

Growing demand for high resolution, real-time water quality monitoring data has prompted Meteor Communications Ltd to invest in a dedicated Water Quality Services Hub near Basingstoke.

The new resource has been developed to support the 500+ ESNET monitoring systems that are currently in operation on rivers and at treatment works across the UK.

“The creation of a dedicated service and calibration resource will enable us to expand the ‘Water Quality as a Service’ capability that has been a major driver for growth in our business,” comments Meteor MD, Matt Dibbs.

In recent years, Meteor Communications has worked with government agencies and water companies to develop the ESNET (Environmental Sensor NETwork) autonomous water quality monitoring systems that can be rapidly deployed and require no power or communication infrastructure.

Modular and with built-in communications and multiparameter capability, ESNET systems deliver robust, high resolution real-time water quality data within minutes of deployment.

The systems are available as a complete portable monitoring station or as part of a kiosk pumped system for semi-permanent or fixed installations. ESNET systems can be purchased outright, but Meteor made a strategic decision to also offer the market a new and unique solution.

Matt Dibbs explains: “For many of our customers, the requirement for water quality monitoring is temporary or intermittent ? to conduct an environmental impact assessment; to characterise or optimise a wastewater treatment works, or as part of an investigation or research project.

So it made less sense for them to purchase the equipment and invest in the associated resources that are necessary to operate a monitoring network.

“Meanwhile, we had established a high level of experience and expertise in the operation of continuous water quality monitoring systems. So, conscious of our customer’s main requirement ? to obtain good quality, reliable data ? we established ‘Water Quality as a Service’ or WQaaS, and it has proved extremely popular.”

Under a WQaaS agreement, Meteor Communications installs ESNET stations at the sites of interest, measuring the parameters required, with data access via the MeteorCloud secure web portal.

The service covers all aspects of data collection including scheduled site visits, calibrations at Meteor laboratories and data display / dissemination.

With fixed monthly costs, the customer has no capital expenditure and no requirement to conduct site visits for calibration or maintenance.

Each ESNET station employs a multiparameter sonde to measure water quality, and the accuracy of readings is assured by a monthly site visit, during which a member of the Meteor team checks the station and swaps the sonde.

Typically, sondes are loaded with sensors for measuring parameters such as dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, conductivity, turbidity, ammonium, Blue Green Algae and chlorophyll.

Following each 4 week deployment, sondes are returned to the Meteor WQS Hub for service and calibration.

Summarising, Matt says: “Our head office in Welwyn Garden City is relatively new, but our remote camera business is also booming, so we needed more space to accommodate our growth, with the added benefit of consolidating our resources and expertise in water quality at the new facility in Basingstoke."
