Effectively remove emerging contaminants in wastewater treatment plants

The treatment of wastewater of domestic, institutional and industrial origin requires efficient processes.

Currently, wastewater treatment infrastructure allows, on average, half of the emerging contaminants found there. In order to increase their yield and remove the rest of the contaminants, otherwise discharged into waterways, scientists are developing new technologies.

Remediation and decontamination expert Jean-Francois Blais of the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) reviewed current and emerging technologies in collaboration with Canadian scientists. The team determined the effectiveness of removing a particular type of contaminant that causes hormonal disorders: endocrine disruptors.

Efficient technologies

One of the technologies with the best potential is ozonation. Indeed, ozone, a powerful oxidizing gas, makes it possible to break down pollutants through a chemical reaction. This same technology was chosen for the Jean-R.-Marcotte wastewater treatment plant, where all of Montreal's wastewater converges.

Another promising method in water treatment is adsorption with activated carbon. In addition to being inexpensive, this material can effectively filter and absorb contaminants, whether in powder or granular form.

In his review, Professor Blais also focuses on electro-oxidation processes and membrane bioreactors. The first method uses two electrodes to degrade pollutants. The second combines a membrane, to filter some of the contaminants, and biological organisms, to degrade what passes through it.

These two approaches are being developed in the Laboratory of Environmental Electrotechnologies and Oxidative Processes of Professor Patrick Drogui, FROM INRS.

Jean-Francois Blais : "All these emerging technologies have the advantage of being able to be added to existing wastewater treatment plants, mainly downstream of current systems."

Ultimately, they could improve the performance of current water treatment techniques without having to significantly modify municipal facilities.

The challenge of Lake Saint-Charles

These different possibilities in the field of wastewater treatment have a concrete impact on municipalities. Quebec City, in particular, quickly became interested in these innovative treatment methods following concerns about the water quality of its main intake reservoir, Lake Saint-Charles. It therefore mandated the INRS team to find effective solutions to this problem, as well as to connect its sewer network.

"Many remote residences use septic tanks and sewage fields," says Professor Blais. We wanted to identify alternatives to connecting without sacrificing the health of waterways, such as the implementation of stand-alone treatment systems that could be added to homes.

In April 2021, Professor Blais, Professor Sophie Duchesne, research officer Genevieve Rioux and professional master's student in water sciences Priscille Ahossi submitted an evaluation and recommendation report that outlined the various solutions that the City could put in place.
