[영국] 템즈워터는 하수관 속 응고된 물질 제거와의 전쟁 중

 

 

영국 템즈 워터(Thames Water) 엔지니어들은 런던의 하수구를 막는 거대한 지방 덩어리와의 '하수 전쟁'을 시작했다고 지난 9월 12일 밝혔다.

템스워터 관계자는 동부 런던의 화이트 샤펠 거리에서 약 4야드의 초대형 응고된 물질(지방덩어리)을 해산시키기 위해 약 3주정도 걸릴 것이라고 말했다.

펙버그(fatberg)는 길이가 250야드이고 중량이 11double-decker busses(약 143톤)이기 때문에 제거에 신중을 기하고 있으며 제거시간도 3주정도 걸린다는 것을 속단할 수 없다.

 

불순물 얼룩은 응고된 젖은 잎사귀, 기저귀, 버려진 지방 및 식용유로 구성되어 있다.

 

 Thames Water의 Matt Rimmer는  "펙버그(fatberg)가 우리가 본 것 중 가장 큰 것을 가지고 있으며 괴물이며 많은 힘과 기계를 가지고 열심히 제거한다"라고 말했다. 그는 이 작업이 "기본적으로 콘크리트를 깨뜨리는 것과 같다"고 말했다.

 

 8명의 근로자가 고성능 제트 호스를 사용하여 얼룩을 부수기 전에 유조선으로 빨아 들여 재활용 현장에서 폐기하고 있다.

런던 하수관에서 이처럼 응고된 물질을 제거하는 것은 처음이 아니지만 템즈 워터가 직면한 적중 가장 큰 적일 수 있다.

 

 2013년에는 근로자가 지금까지 경험한 것 중에서 가장 큰 펙버그(fatberg)를 깨버렸다. 런던 킹스턴의 남서부 교외에 위치한 하수구에서 발견된 그 하나는 무게가 15톤에 달하며 버스 1대 만큼 길었다.

Engineers battle 143-ton "total monster" in London sewer

LONDON -- British engineers say they have launched a "sewer war" against a giant fat blob clogging London's sewers.

Thames Water officials said Tuesday it is likely to take three weeks to break up the outsize fatberg lodged about 4 yards under the streets of Whitechapel, in East London. 

 

They caution against expecting quick results as the fatberg is 250 yards long and weighs as much as 11 double-decker busses -- or about 143 tons.

 

The unsavory blob consists of congealed wet wipes, diapers, condoms and discarded fats and cooking oil.

 

Thames Water's Matt Rimmer says the fatberg is "up there with the biggest we've ever seen. It's a total monster and taking a lot of manpower and machinery to remove as it's set hard." He said the task is "basically like trying to break up concrete."

 

Eight workers are using high powered jet hoses to break up the blob before sucking it out into tankers for disposal at a recycling site.

 

This isn't London's first battle with a fatberg, but it may be the biggest enemy Thames Water has ever faced.

 

In 2013, workers broke up a fatberg they described as the largest ever encountered. That one, found in the sewers under the ritzy southwest London suburb of Kingston, weighed in at a mere 15 tons and was only as long as a single bus.
