2011년 3월 일본 후쿠시마에서 발생한 원전사고로 인하여 안전성 검토를 위해 원자로의 작동을 멈추고 청정에너지 관련 투자를 촉진할 수 있는 인센티브(incentive) 제도를 도입하였다.

원자력 발전기술의 단계적 철수 결심과 재생에너지 관련 인센티브 제도의 도입으로 인해 일본의 많은 기업들이 지열에너지에 대한 그들의 관심을 고취시키고 있는 중이다. 그로 인해, 일본은 지열발전기술 분야에서 선도적인 위치를 점하고 있다고 판단할 수 있다.

일본에서 가장 거대한 철강제조업체인 Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp.사에서 생산한 제품은 2015년 초 지열발전사업을 통해 연간 50억 엔(yen: 4천9백만 달러)의 매출을 올릴 것으로 예상되고 있다.

그리고 인도네시아(Indonesia)와 같은 국가에서의 지열발전사업을 위해 Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering Co.사의 상무이사인 Ryuichi Kageyama 이사는 지열발전사업의 당위성과 함께 전체적인 사업브리핑을 실시하였다. 뿐만 아니라, 발전소 운영, 유지보수 서비스, 그리고 전력 소매 등을 수행할 계획을 가지고 있다고 그는 말하였다.

Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering Co.사는 현재 지열발전기술 판매를 위한 경쟁적인 모습을 가지고 있지는 않다. 왜냐하면, 지난 몇 년 동안 일본 내 개발은 거의 수행되지 않았었다고 Ryuichi Kageyama 이사는 말하였다.

일본의 마지막 상업용 지열발전소는 1999년 하치조 섬에서 건설되었으며, 이곳은 동경에서 남쪽으로 약 28킬로미터(kilometers: 178마일) 떨어진 곳에 위치해 있다.

동경을 기반으로 하고 있는 Nippon Steel & Sumikin사는 일본에서 가동되고 있는 17개 지열발전소 중 9개 지열발전소 - 하치조 섬(Hachijo island) 지열발전소 포함 - 를 위한 증기생산설비와 파이프라인(pipeline)을 공급하게 될 것이다.

그러는 동안, JFE Holding Inc.사의 공학설비와 그들의 파트너(partner)들은 일본 북쪽 지역에 7MW 규모의 지열발전소를 건설하기 위한 시험굴착을 시작하였다고 발표하였다. 이를 통해 일본은 지열발전기술의 도약을 꿈꾸고 있다.

2011년, JFE Engineering Corp.사, Japan Metals & Chemicals Co.사, 그리고 JMC Geothermal Engineering Co.사 사이에서 만들어진 하나의 벤처기업(venture)이 이와테현(Iwate prefecture) 하치만타이 도시(Hachimantai city)에서 이러한 시험굴착을 수행하고 있다고 이상의 기업들은 오늘 발표를 하였다.

시험굴착의 시작과 함께 Mitsui Oil Exploration Co.사는 이번 벤처기업에 합작을 하기로 결정하였다고 이상의 기업들은 말하고 있다. Mitsui사와 JFE사는 각자가 33% 이상의 지분을 가지게 될 것이다.

그리고 나머지를 2개 기업을 제외한 나머지 기업들이 나누어 가지게 될 것이다. 지열발전기술은 일본의 핵재난 이후 풍력발전기술 다음으로 각광을 받는 분야이며, 이상의 프로젝트를 통해 일본은 전체 전력량 중 일부를 지열발전기술을 포함한 재생에너지원을 사용하여 발전시키고자 한다.

 

 

Japanese companies are renewing their interest in geothermal energy after the March 2011 nuclear crisis shut down reactors for safety checks and the introduction of an incentive program for clean energy encouraged investment.

A unit of Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp., Japan’s largest steelmaker, expects annual sales of 5 billion yen ($49 million) from its geothermal business as early as 2015.
 

Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering Co. plans to expand its business in Japan and in countries such as Indonesia, Ryuichi Kageyama, general manager for the geothermal power business, said at a briefing today. It also plans to enter plant operation, maintenance services and power retailing, he said.
 

The company doesn’t have a comparative figure for current geothermal sales as there has been little development in Japan over the past several years, he said. The country’s last commercial geothermal plant was built in 1999 on Hachijo island, about 287 kilometers (178 miles) south of Tokyo.
 

Nippon Steel & Sumikin, based in Tokyo, has supplied steam production equipment and pipelines for nine of the 17 geothermal stations currently running in Japan, including the Hachijo island plant, according to the company.
 

Meanwhile, JFE Holding Inc.’s engineering unit and partners announced they've started test drilling for a 7-megawatt geothermal power station in northern Japan.
 

A venture set up in 2011 between JFE Engineering Corp., Japan Metals & Chemicals Co. and JMC Geothermal Engineering Co. is conducting the test in Hachimantai city, Iwate prefecture, the companies said in a statement today.
 

With the start of test drilling, Mitsui Oil Exploration Co. has decided to join the venture, according to the statement. Mitsui and JFE will each have a more than 33 percent stake. The rest will be split between the two other companies.
