[미국] 디바이트, 음식물쓰레기로 재생 에너지 생산

개발 자금 위해  6천300만 달러 지방 녹색 채권 발행

탄소 제로 목표에 한걸음 가까이

음식물의 가치를 보호하는 솔루션 기술 회사인 디바이트(Divert, Inc.)는 4월 26일 캘리포니아 공공 재정 당국(CalPFA)을 통해 발행된 6천300만 달러의 시영 녹색 채권으로 자금을 조달한 캘리포니아 터록(Turlock)의 에너지 시설 혁신 계획을 발표했다. 이 새로운 시설은 낭비된 음식물을 재생 에너지로 변화시켜 캘리포니아가 2045년까지 탄소 오염 제로 목표에 도달할 수 있도록 도울 전망이다. 

라이언 비긴(Ryan Begin) 디바이트의 CEO이자 공동 설립자는 "낭비된 식량 위기는 기후 변화와 식량 불안정의 주요 원인이다. 각 주와 지방자치단체는 지역사회가 건강하고 지속 가능한 환경에서 살 수 있도록 해야 한다는 압력이 증가하고 있다"라며 "4월 26일은 세계적인 음식 쓰레기 중단의 날로서 아주 적합하다. 지난 16년 동안 디바이트는 지속 가능한 인프라와 첨단 기술을 통해 폐기물을 방지하기 위한 작업에 앞장서 왔다. 이는 디바이트가 캘리포니아에서 입증한 솔루션을 확장하고 낭비 없는 미래에 대한 비전을 더욱 가속화할 수 있는 혁신적인 기회다"라고 설명했다. 

미국에서만 연간 1억 톤 이상의 폐기물이 발생하고 있으며, 50% 이상이 매립지나 소각장으로 사용되고 있다. 게다가, 낭비되는 음식은 미국 메탄 배출의 15%, 세계 온실 가스(GHG) 배출의 10%까지 기여한다. 6만5천 평방 피트 규모의 이 시설은 소매점과 다른 회사의 폐기물을 탄소 음성 재생 에너지로 전환하여 매립지에서 해로운 메탄을 배출하는 것을 방지하겠다는 디바이트의 약속을 이행할 것이다. 이 시설은 또한 기업들에게 데이터 분석을 제공하여 낭비를 줄이고 더 많은 음식을 기부하기 위한 예방 조치를 취할 수 있는 통찰력을 제공할 것이다.

2024년에 완전히 가동되면, 터록 시설은 연간 10만 톤의 낭비되는 음식물을 처리할 수 있을 것이다. 이 시설은 연간 최대 2만3천 톤의 이산화탄소를 상쇄하며, 이는 연간 거의 5천 대의 가스 자동차를 도로에서 배출하는 것과 맞먹는 양이다.  이 시설의 재생 에너지 생산은 매년 약 3천 대의 주택을 공급하기에 충분할 것이다.

최근 통과된 「식량 기부 개선법」에 명시된 바와 같이, 주들은 세금 인센티브, 낭비되는 음식을 재처리하기 위한 더 엄격한 법, 그리고 더 강력한 식량 기부에 대한 책임 보호를 포함한 기후 변화를 해결하기 위한 법을 점점 더 시행하고 있다. 특히 캘리포니아에서는 2016년 통과된 「SB1383법」에 따라 폐기물 방지나 기부를 통해 쓰레기 매립지에서 폐기된 음식물을 전용할 것을 요구하고 있으며, 재생 에너지를 만들기 위해 혐기성 소화를 사용할 것을 권장하고 있다.

California Public Finance Authority issues $63 million municipal green bond to fund the development of the new facility, bringing California closer to its net-zero carbon pollution goals

 

Stop Food Waste Day – Divert, Inc., an impact technology company on a mission to Protect the Value of Food™, today announced the groundbreaking on its integrated diversion and energy facility in Turlock, California, funded in part by a $63 million municipal green bond issued through the California Public Finance Authority (CalPFA). The new facility will capture and turn wasted food into carbon negative renewable energy, bringing California closer to reaching its net-zero carbon pollution goal by 2045.

“The wasted food crisis is a major contributor to climate change and food insecurity. States and municipalities are on the frontlines, under increasing pressure to ensure that their communities live in healthy, sustainable environments,” said Ryan Begin, CEO and co-founder of Divert. “It is fitting that today’s announcement falls on April 26, global Stop Food Waste Day. For the past 16 years, Divert has been at the forefront of working to prevent waste through our sustainable infrastructure and advanced technologies. The U.S. alone generates more than 100 million tons of wasted food annually, with over 50% going to landfills or incinerators. Moreover, wasted food contributes up to 15% of U.S. methane emissions and 10% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The 65,000-square-foot facility will further deliver on Divert’s commitment to transform waste from retailers and other companies into carbon negative renewable energy, thereby preventing it from emitting harmful methane in landfills. The facility will also provide companies with data analytics, giving them the insights to take preventative steps to waste less and donate more food that is still edible.

Once fully operational in 2024, the Turlock facility will be able to process 100,000 tons of wasted food a year. The facility will offset up to 23,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide a year - the equivalent to taking nearly 5,000 gas-powered cars off the road a year - while the facility’s renewable energy production will be enough to supply roughly 3,000 homes each year.

States are increasingly implementing legislation to tackle climate change, including tax incentives, stricter laws for reprocessing wasted food, and stronger liability protection for food donations, as outlined in the recently passed Food Donation Improvement Act. In California specifically, the SB 1383 law passed in 2016 requires the diversion of wasted food from landfills through waste prevention or donation, and encourages the use of anaerobic digestion to create renewable energy.

The Turlock facility brings Divert closer to its plans to scale to 30 facilities across the U.S. to be within 100 miles of 80% of the U.S. population in the next eight years. The company currently manages approximately 0.5% of U.S. wasted food from 5,400 food retail stores and intends to grow that to 5% through its expansion goals.
