[캐나다] 아나르기아, 유기 폐기물-재생 에너지 프로젝트 계약자로 선정

아나르기아(Anaergia Inc.)는 캘리포니아 샌디에이고에 현재 건설 중인 이스트 카운티 고도정수(East County Advanced Water Purpination, East County AWP) 시설에서 정수 슬러지로부터 재생 가능한 전력을 생산할 에너지 회수 계약업체로 선정됐다고 18일 발표했다.

아나르기아는 에너지 회수 프로젝트가 정수 슬러지와 함께 음식물 쓰레기도 처리할 것으로 전망한다. 아나르기아는 폐기물을 재생 가능한 에너지로 전환하는 시설을 설계 및 건설하고, 시운전 후 장기 운영 및 유지 보수를 제공할 예정이다.

이스트 카운티 고도정수 시설은 파드레댐 상수도국(Padre Dam Municipal Water District), 엘카혼(El Cajon), 샌디에이고(San Diego), 헬릭스 워터 디스트릿(Helix Water District) 수도 사업소 간의 파트너십인 고도 정수 프로그램의 일부다. 이 프로그램은 하루에 최대 천150만 갤런의 새로운 지역 식수를 생산할 것으로 예상되며, 이는 1년 동안 약 5만 가구에 공급할 수 있는 양이다.

이스트 카운티 고도정수에서 진행하는 아나르기아 프로젝트는 혐기성 소화 고형물과 잠재적인 지역 유기 폐기물에 의해 생성된 바이오 가스로부터 재생 가능한 전력을 생산할 예정이다. 아나르기아는 바이오가스 컨디셔닝 시스템, 열병합 및 전력(CHP)발전뿐 아니라, 유기 폐기물 운송을 위한 저장 탱크가 있는 선택적 수용 스테이션을 포함하는 폐기물 재생처리 전력 시스템을 갖출 계획이다.

이러한 기술을 통해 이스트 카운티 고도정수 시설은 최대 3.1MW(메가와트)의 재생 가능한 전기 및 열을 생산할 수 있으며 향후 4.6MW까지 늘어날 전망이다. 또 캘리포니아 법에 따라 매립지에서만 전환 가능했던 유기 폐기물을 재활용할 수 있는 지역 배출구를 제공할 예정이다. 이 법은 음식물 및 기타 유기 폐기물이 매립될 때 발생하는 메탄의 배출을 줄이기 위해 고안됐다.  

브렛 호드슨(Brett Hodson) 아나르기아의 CEO는 "유기 폐기물에서 에너지를 생성하는 기술을 통해, 이스트 카운티 고도정수 시설은 환경과 사람들에게 도움이 되는 일을 하고 있다"며 "이 프로젝트는 다른 시설의 모델이 될 것이다"라고 말했다.

또한 "입증된 기술과 탄력적인 인프라로 유틸리티에 경제적 이점을 제공하고, 폐기물을 혐기성으로 소화해 만든 바이오 가스는 현장에서 사용할 수 있는 재생 가능한 전기와 열을 생성하기 위해 회수돼 전기 시설에 대한 의존도를 낮추고, 지방 자치 단체의 비용을 절감할 것이다"라고 말했다.

마크 니미츠(Mark Niemiec) 이스트 카운티 AWP 이사는 "에너지 회수 프로젝트는 에너지 절약, 인프라 개선, 환경 및 지역 사회 이익을 제공하는 동시에 바이오가스의 생산, 유익한 사용 및 가치를 극대화할 것이다"라고 말했다.

또한 "고도정수 시설은 외부 수자원에 대한 의존도를 줄이고, 지속 가능한 지역 식수 공급을 창출한다"며 "에너지 회수 프로젝트는 고도 정수 시설이 제공하는 지속 가능성 및 지역사회 회복력의 이점을 보완할 것이다"라고 말했다. 마지막으로 "이 프로젝트는 고도정수 시설의 화석 연료 사용을 줄이고, 에너지 회복력을 개선하며, 비용을 절감해 궁극적으로 요금 납부자에게 이익이 될 것이다"라고 덧붙였다. 

아나르기아의 에너지 회수 프로젝트는 공동 재활용 용도로 설계된 아나르기아의 옴니믹스™(OmniMix™) 믹서가 장착된 시설의 혐기성 소화조를 포함해 새로운 이스트 카운티 고도정수 시설의 여러 부분을 보완할 것이다.

ANAERGIA SELECTED TO DESIGN, BUILD AND OPERATE ORGANIC WASTE-TO-RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECT IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY

 

 Anaergia Inc. (TSX: ANRG) today announced it has been selected as the Energy Recovery Contractor for a new system that will produce renewable power from wastewater sludge at the East County Advanced Water Purification (East County AWP) facility now under construction in Santee, California. Anaergia anticipates the Energy Recovery project will also eventually digest food waste along with the wastewater sludge. Anaergia is expected to design and build the waste-to-renewable energy facility and provide long-term operations and maintenance after commissioning.

The East County AWP facility is part of an Advanced Water Purification Program that is a partnership among Padre Dam Municipal Water District, the City of El Cajon, the County of San Diego, and Helix Water District. The Program is expected to produce up to 11.5 million gallons per day of new local drinking water, enough to supply about 50,000 households for a year.

Anaergia’s project at the East County AWP is expected to produce renewable power from biogas created by anaerobically digesting wastewater solids and potentially locally-sourced organic waste. Anaergia plans to integrate a waste-to-renewable power system that includes a biogas conditioning system, combined heat and power (CHP) generation, as well as an optional receiving station with storage tanks for organic waste deliveries. These technologies will enable the East County AWP facility to make up to 3.1 megawatts of renewable electricity and heat, with potential for future expansion to 4.6 megawatts. The organic waste reception would provide a local outlet for recycling organic waste that is required to be diverted from landfills under California law. The law is designed to reduce planet-warming methane emissions, which are created when food and other organic wastes are landfilled.

“By including the technologies that create energy from organic waste, the East County AWP facility is doing the right thing for the environment and for the people it serves,” said Brett Hodson, CEO of Anaergia. “This project serves as a model for other facilities. It leverages proven technology, adds resilient infrastructure, and brings economic benefits to the utility. The biogas made from anaerobically digesting this waste will be recovered to generate renewable electricity and heat for on-site use, reducing dependance on electric utilities and cutting costs for these municipalities.”

“The Energy Recovery project would maximize the production, beneficial use, and value of biogas while delivering energy savings, infrastructure enhancements, and environmental and community benefits,” said Mark Niemiec, Director of the East County AWP. “To begin with, the AWP facility is creating a sustainable and local drinking water supply while reducing the region’s dependence on imported water. The Energy Recovery project will complement and enhance the sustainability and community resilience benefits provided by the AWP facility: the project will reduce the AWP facility’s use of fossil fuels, improve energy resiliency, and cut costs, which ultimately benefits our ratepayers.”

Anaergia’s energy recovery project complements other portions of the new East County AWP facility, including the facility’s anaerobic digesters, which are fitted with Anaergia’s OmniMix™ mixers, designed for co-digestion applications.
