CCS 산업 위한 확장 가능하고 비용 효율적인 디지털 솔루션 개발에 기여

SLB는 12월 11일(현지시각) 노던 라이츠 조인트 벤처(Northern Lights Joint Venturem, NL와 노던 라이츠 운영을 위한 통합 클라우드 기반 워크플로우 최적화를 위해 마이크로소프트(Microsoft)와 양해각서(MOU)를 체결했다고 발표했다.

노던 라이츠는 국가 간 탄소 포집 및 저장(carbon capture and storage, CCS)을 위한 최초의 CO2 운송 및 저장 공급업체다. 이번 협력은 새롭게 부상하는 CCS 산업을 위한 확장 가능하고 비용 효율적인 디지털 솔루션 개발에 기여할 것이다.

보르 야콥슨(Børre Jacobsen) 노던 라이츠의 이사는 “디지털 워크플로는 탄소 포집 지점부터 영구 저장소에 이르기까지 엔드투엔드 가치 사슬을 통해 CO2를 성공적으로 관리하기 위한 핵심 요소”라며 “업계를 선도하는 기술 기업인 SLB 및 마이크로소프트와 디지털 CCS 솔루션 개발을 위해 협력하게 돼 매우 기쁘게 생각한다”고 밝혔다.

협업의 초기 단계에서 SLB는 2022년 노던 라이츠의 지하 워크플로를 간소화하기 위해 배포한 Delfi™ 디지털 플랫폼에서 디지털 CCS 워크플로와 수치 시뮬레이션 시스템을 확장했다.

트뤼그베 랜든(Trygve Randen) SLB의 디지털 제품 및 솔루션 부문 수석부사장은 “30년이 채 안 지나서 글로벌 탄소중립 목표에 영향을 미치기 위해 CCS는 100~200배로 확장해야 한다”며 “디지털 솔루션은 CCS에 필요한 속도와 규모를 구현하는 데 핵심적 역할을 하고, 마이크로소프트 및 노던 라이츠 JV와 긴밀히 협력해 CCS 밸류체인의 복잡한 디지털화를 촉진할 수 있게 돼 기쁘다”고 밝혔다.

마이크로소프트는 마이크로소프트 애저(Microsoft는 Azure) 플랫폼을 배포하고 확장해 노던 라이츠의 비즈니스와 SLB 디지털 CCS 워크플로를 지원하는 확장 가능한 클라우드 서비스를 보장한다. SLB와 마이크로소프트는 노던 라이츠의 디지털 인프라 역할을 할 애저 호환 오픈소스 데이터 플랫폼 개발을 위해 협력하고 있다.

스베레 브랜즈버그 달(Sverre Brandsberg Dahl) 마이크로소프트 에너지 및 자원 산업(Microsoft Energy and Resources Industry)의 최고기술책임자는 “마이크로소프트는 SLB 및 노던 라이츠와 긴밀히 협력해 2024년과 그 이후에 대규모로 실질적인 CO2 감축을 추진하게 돼 기쁘다”며 “이 등대 프로젝트가 전 세계 기후 목표 달성에 필요한 CCS 산업과 디지털 인프라를 가속하는 데 도움이 될 것을 확신한다”고 전했다.

그는 이어 “탄소 포집 및 저장은 CO2 배출량을 줄이거나 제거할 수 있으므로 산업 배출 기업에 현실적인 탈탄소화 기회를 제공할 수 있다"며 "국제에너지기구(IEA)에 따르면 CCUS 없이 순 배출량 제로를 달성하는 것은 사실상 불가능하다”고 밝혔다.

노던 라이츠 조인트 벤처는 산업의 탈탄소화를 가속하기 위해 에퀴노르(Equinor), 토탈에너지스(TotalEnergies) 및 셸(Shell)이 설립한 회사다.

운송 및 저장 시설의 개발은 예정대로 진행 중이며 2024년에 노던 라이츠는 산업 배출 기업으로부터 CO2를 받아 저장할 예정이다. 1단계 개발의 용량에는 연간 150만 톤의 CO2를 저장할 수 있으며, 이미 야라(Yara) 및 외르스테드(Ørsted)와 상업용 운송 및 저장 계약을 체결했다.

한편, 노던 라이츠는 더 큰 성장 목표를 가지고 있으며 시장 발전에 따라 저장 용량을 확장하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다.

SLB Collaborates with Northern Lights JV and Microsoft to Digitalize Carbon Capture and Storage Value Chain

 

LONDON, December 11, 2023—SLB (NYSE: SLB) and Northern Lights Joint Venture (NL) announced today they have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Microsoft to optimize integrated cloud-based workflows for the operation of Northern Lights, one of the first CO2 transport and storage providers for cross-border carbon capture and storage (CCS). The collaboration will contribute to the development of scalable and cost-efficient digital solutions for the emerging CCS industry. 

“Digital workflows are a key component to successfully managing CO2 through the end-to-end value chain, from capture point to permanent storage. Northern Lights is very pleased to partner with industry leading tech companies, SLB and Microsoft, on the development of digital CCS solutions”, said Børre Jacobsen, Managing Director of Northern Lights. 

In the initial phases of the collaboration, SLB will extend its digital CCS workflows and numerical simulation systems on its Delfi™ digital platform, which was deployed to streamline the subsurface workflows of Northern Lights in 2022.

“In less than three decades, CCS must scale up by 100–200 times to have the expected impact on global net zero ambitions,” said Trygve Randen, Senior Vice President of Digital Products and Solutions, SLB. “Digital solutions have a key role to play in enabling the necessary speed and scale for CCS, and we are excited to work closely with Microsoft and the Northern Lights JV to facilitate the complex digitalization of the CCS value chain.”

Microsoft will deploy and extend its Microsoft Azure platform to ensure scalable cloud services that support Northern Lights’ business and the SLB digital CCS workflows. SLB and Microsoft are collaborating on the development of an Azure-compliant open-source data platform that will serve as the digital infrastructure for Northern Lights. 

“Microsoft is thrilled to partner closely with SLB and Northern Lights to drive tangible CO2 reductions at scale in 2024 and beyond. We are confident this lighthouse project can help accelerate the CCS industry and the digital infrastructure that is needed to reach global climate goals,” said Sverre Brandsberg Dahl, Chief Technology Officer, Microsoft Energy and Resources Industry.

Carbon capture and storage enables the reduction or removal of CO2 emissions, providing industrial emitters with realistic decarbonization opportunities. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), “reaching net zero will be virtually impossible without CCUS”. 

Northern Lights Joint Venture was established by Equinor, TotalEnergies and Shell to accelerate the decarbonization of industry. The development of the transport and storage facilities is on schedule and Northern Lights will be ready to receive and store CO2 from industrial emitters in 2024. The first phase development has a storage capacity of 1.5 million metric tonnes CO2 per year and the company has already entered into commercial transport and storage agreements with Yara and Ørsted. Northern Lights has further growth ambitions and aims to expand its storage capacity according to market development.
