Study launched to investigate grid stability in Germany to 2030

Berlin, Germany --- (METERING.COM) --- September 3, 2013 - The German Energy Agency (Deutsche Energie-Agentur, dena) has launched a study to investigate the challenges posed to the grid by the expansion of renewable energy sources and the measures necessary to guarantee a stable supply of electricity in future.
 
It will also research how renewable energy, storage systems, flexible control of electricity consumption and the use of power electronics can contribute to providing system services. The results of the study are expected by the end of 2013.
 
As wind turbines and solar energy systems generate electricity regardless of demand, new methods are required to balance generation and demand at all times. Thus, the study examines the extent to which balancing energy can be provided as a system service in future by storage systems, renewable energy and other alternatives for instance.
 
The study also incorporates the fact that generation and consumption must be balanced over greater geographical distances as renewable energy sources expand. The distance over which electricity must be transported is increasing overall. The challenge of regulating voltage in the grid grows accordingly. Therefore, the study will investigate how decentralized renewable energy sources and other alternatives can support grid operation as availability of conventional power stations for this purpose decreases.
 
Based on the results of the study, technical, process-related and regulatory requirements will be examined and short to medium term action recommendations will be developed. The analysis will show whether system services for the electricity grid can also be provided by generators and loads connected to the distribution grids to an increasing extent, and which role renewable energy, storage systems or load management can play in this. Finally, the study will clarify the extent to which a continuous minimum conventional generation level will remain required.
 
dena is producing the ¡°System Services 2030¡± study as part of a cooperation with transmission system and distribution grid operators, operators and project developers of renewable energy, as well as manufacturers of grid and system technology.
