스코틀랜드(Scotland) 던디(Dundee)에 해양재생에너지 발전기술 개발, 설계, 그리고 해양 재생에너지 건축자재 및 프로토타입(prototype)의 기초 검사를 지원할 목적으로 설립된 새로운 해양 재생에너지 검증센터는 던디대학교(University of Dundee)에서 만들어졌다.

해양 재생에너지 발전기술 테스트 센터(Marine Renewables Test Centre) 센터장인 Rod Jones 교수는 이에 대해 “비록 고려할만한 과정이 터빈(turbine)을 개발하고 제작하는 것으로 구성되어 있다 하더라도 중요한 한계점들은 해상풍력발전단지를 위한 공고한 기초와 같은 주요한 구조적 구성부품의 설계와 위임, 그리고 배치 등에서 존재하고 있다”고 언급했다.

2백만 파운드(320만 달러) 가치의 이번 프로젝트는 유럽지역개발기금이 새롭게 발표한 833,000파운드(150만 달러)의 지원을 받고 있다.

해양 재생에너지 발전기술 테스트 센터의 센터장인 Rod Jones 교수는 해상 풍력발전기술과 해양에너지 발전기술이 직면하고 있는 여러 가지 한계와 문제에 대해 “우리들이 하고 있는 연구 및 실험과정이 효율성이 높은 풍력터빈을 개발하고 제작하는 데 있지만 가장 큰 문제점과 한계점은 해상풍력발전단지 설치에 필요한 중요한 구성부품의 설계 및 배치 등에 있다”고 언급했다.

좀 더 구체적으로 Jone 교수는 “우리는 확실한 해양에너지 발전기술의 개발과 혁신적인 기초 솔루션(solution)을 모델링(modelling)하는데 던디(Dundee) 소재의 기업이며, 세계에서 가장 선도적인 전문가들이다.

 

새로운 해양 재생에너지 발전기술 테스트 센터는 그것을 건설하게 될 것이며, 해양발전기술 재료 및 구조의 개발과 인증을 통합하게 될 것이다. 이는 만일 우리가 스코틀랜드(Scotland)에 있는 풍력에너지와 해양에너지 촉진을 위한 천연자원을 활용하기 위해 필요한 시스템(system)을 성공적으로 배치할 수 있다면 산업에 의해 특히 필요로 하게 될 것”이라고 말했다.

에너지, 기업, 및 관광부 장관인 Fergus Ewing 장관은 이에 대해 “던디에 있는 해양 재생에너지 발전기술 테스트 센터는 에딘버러 대학교(University of Edinburgh)에 위치한 Flowave TT에 의해 제공된 국제적으로 인정된 설비를 보완하게 될 것이다. 이 곳은 세계에서 가장 선도적인 위치에 있는 테스트 설비”라고 덧붙였다.

던디대학교 과학 및 공학부 학부장인이자 부총장인 Stephen Decent 교수는 이에 대해 “해양 재생에너지 발전기술 테스트 센터와 해상 재생에너지 연구소는 월드클래스(world-class) 전문가들을 제공함으로써 이러한 조각을 맞추어 갈 것”이라고 언급했다.

해상 재생에너지 연구소는 올해 초 출발하였다. 그리고 이곳은 던디대학교, 아버딘 대학교(University of Aberdeen), 그리고 로버드 고든 대학교(Robert Gordon University)에서 초청된 다른 학문분야 전문가들과 함께 하기 위해 하나의 파트너십(partnership)을 체결한 것이다. 해상 재생에너지 연구소는 북해와 전세계에 해상풍력발전산업을 위한 솔루션(solution)을 개발하고 전달하는데 그 목적이 있다.

ERDF 역시 해상 재생에너지 연구소를 지원하기 위해 160,000파운드(220,000달러) 이상의 자금을 제공하여왔다.

 

 

 

 

 

A new Marine Renewables Test Centre that aims to support the development, design and testing of marine renewable construction materials and prototype foundations has been created at the University of Dundee.

 

The £2million (US$3.2 million) project is being supported with £833,000 ($1.5 million) of funding newly announced by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

 

Professor Rod Jones, Head of the new Centre, commented on the challenges faced by offshore marine and wind renewable technology saying: “Although considerable progress has been made in developing and manufacturing turbines, the main challenges now lie in the design, commissioning and deployment of key structural components such as concrete foundations for offshore wind farms.

 

“We have world-leading expertise at Dundee in the development of concrete technology and the modelling of novel foundation solutions.

 

This new Centre will build on that and be integral to the provision of, demonstration and certification of marine materials and structures, which are particularly needed by industry if we are to successfully deploy the systems required to exploit Scotland’s natural resources in wind and marine energy.”

 

Fergus Ewing, Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism, added: “The test centre in Dundee will complement the internationally recognised facilities provided by Flowave TT located at the University of Edinburgh and, of course, the world leading testing facilities offered at EMEC.”

 

Professor Stephen Decent, Vice-Principal and Head of the College of Art, Science and Engineering at the University of Dundee also noted: “The Marine Renewables Test Centre and the Offshore Renewables Institute complete the jigsaw by providing world-class expertise in engineering, policy and planning.”

 

The Offshore Renewables Institute was launched earlier this year and is a partnership that brings together experts from different disciplines at the University of Dundee, the University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University with the aim of developing and delivering solutions for the offshore wind industry in the North Sea and globally.

 

ERDF has also provided more than £160,000 ($220,000) to support the Offshore Renewables Institute.
