| GE·Aramco, desalination energy challenge 개최
GE와 Aramco는 2014년 4월 15일 담수화의 에너지 효율 향상을 위한 노력을 가속하기 위해 technology challenge를 개최했다. 4명의 수상자는 각각 5만달러를 보상받고, 최고의 아이디어를 상업화하는데 더 많은 투자가 예상된다.
최근의 주요한 노력은 2009년 US$ 3.00/kgal (US$ 0.79/m³) 비용으로 담수화 전체 소비 에너지를 11.28 kWh/kgal (2.98 kWh/m³)로 증명한 Affordable Desalination Collaboration이다.
이 도전은 비용을 절감하는 참신한 방법을 발견하고 기술 진보와 절차 개선을 목표로 하고 있다. 마감일은 7월 16일까지며 수상자는 9월에 발표 될 예정이다.

GE and Aramco launch desalination energy challenge
GE ecomagination and Aramco Entrepreneurship launched a worldwide open technology challenge on 15 April 2014 to speed up efforts to improve the energy-efficiency of seawater desalination.
Four winners will be awarded a prize of US$ 50,000 each, and further investments towards commercialization of the best ideas will be considered.
The last major effort in this direction was the Affordable Desalination Collaboration in California, which demonstrated in 2009 total energy consumption for seawater desalination at 11.28 kWh/kgal (2.98 kWh/m³) at a projected total cost of US$ 3.00/kgal (US$ 0.79/m³).
The goal of this challenge is to identify novel ways to lower these costs around the world, either through technology advances, process improvements or both.
Nabil Al-Khowaiter, Aramco Entrepreneurship's director of special projects, stated "Finding a more efficient method of desalinating seawater will be a game-changer in our collective pursuit of a more sustainable energy future across the globe. Aramco Entrepreneurship is partnering with GE not only to identify new solutions to lowering desalination costs, but also to invest in and attract new technologies and industries to Saudi Arabia."
Solutions must be innovative, impactful, feasible and scalable across the globe. Entries are being immediately accepted at www.ninesights.com/community/ecomagination. The deadline is 16 July 2014, and winners will be announced in November 2014.
