[미국] Ecosphere Technologies사, 이동식 태양 발전기 PowerCube 완성
미국 기업인 Ecosphere Technologies사는 이동식으로 배치할 수 있는 최초의 태양 에너지 발전기(solar powered generator)인 Ecos PowerCube를 완성했다고 발표했다.
PowerCube는 멀리 떨어져 있는 지역에 태양 발전(solar electricity)으로 생산된 전기를 제공할 수 있는 이동식 소규모 유틸리티(mobile micro-utility)로, 2013년 11월 Renewable Energy Magazine 저널에 발표됐다. 이 기술은 USPTO(US Patent & Trademark Office)로부터 특허를 취득한 바 있다.

PowerCube는 10`, 20` 및 40` 표준 ISO 선적 컨테이너 발자국(shipping container footprints)에서 가능한 태양 발전 생산의 전체 양을 극대화하기 위하여 적층형 태양 패널(stacked solar panel)의 배열을 통합하여, 증가하는 자족적인 에너지(off-grid energy) 수요를 충족하는데 도움을 주도록 고안됐다.
장치는 15kW까지 동력을 생산할 수 있는 능력을 가지고 있으며, 무선 통신(wireless telecommunications), 태양 발전 인터넷 및 이동식 수처리 시스템 등을 포함한 다양한 탑재 시스템에 동력을 제공하는 데 사용될 수 있다. PowerCube에 의해 생성된 전기는 군대 또는 비상 대응 및 삶을 지속시키는 재난 구조팀, 이동식 인프라 모듈, 사령부 및 임시 학교 등에 공급하는데 사용될 수 있다.
이러한 혁신적인 특허를 취득한 태양 기술은 우리 세대의 가장 중요한 혁신 중 하나가 될 가능성이 있다고 Ecosphere Technologies사 책임자이며 특허 전략가인 Dean Becker는 밝혔다. Ecosphere Technologies사는 즉각적인 논증을 시작할 준비가 되어 있으며, 이러한 독특한 자산을 현금화하기 위하여 다양하고 폭넓은 산업과 전 세계적인 응용에 대한 전략적 파트너와 협력을 도모하고 있다고 Becker는 밝혔다.
이 장치는 육상, 대기 또는 해양 등으로 수송될 수 있으며, 자급자족의 군대, 재난 구조, 인도주의적 원조 및 이동식 통신 운영 등을 지원하는데 이상적으로 적합하다. 상용 태양 발전 배열과는 달리, 태양 모듈은 전쟁 지역에 우세한 적대적 환경 또는 나쁜 날씨로부터 태양 모듈을 보호하기 위하여 철회가 가능하다.
미군은 연료 수송을 보호하는데 관여하는 사상률(casualty rate) 때문에 재생 에너지를 포용할 계획을 수립했다. 즉, 미국 군인을 보호하기 위하여 재생 에너지 수용에 많은 관심을 가지고 있다. 2013년 5월 미국은 향후 30년에 걸쳐 이루어질 바이오매스 프로젝트, 태양 발전, 풍력 발전 및 지열 에너지 등에서 생산된 전기를 구매하는데 70억 달러를 사용할 계획이라고 발표했다.
이러한 계획의 목표는 2020년까지 미국에서 재생 에너지 용량을 1GW급으로 설치하는 것이다. 또한 2020년까지 2005년 수준에서 30% 가까이 비전술 연료 소비(non-tactical fuel consumption)를 감축하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다.
연료용 수송 선박이 그 대상으로 겨냥되어 확대될 수 있다고 에너지 안보를 담당하고 있는 육군 부차관보인 Richard Kidd는 설명했다. 태양 광선은 계속 존재할 것이다. 재생 에너지를 이용하여 공급망 취약성과 원자재 비용(commodity cost)을 제거할 수 있으며, 공급망 중단의 기회를 낮출 수 있다고 Kidd는 덧붙였다.
Ecosphere Technologies사 소속의 CEO인 Dennis McGuire는 PowerCube가 멀리 떨어져 있는 지역의 캠프 설치에 상당한 인프라 결핍 문제를 해결하거나 대규모 재난에 대응할 수 있다고 밝혔다. 기업의 사업 모델과 일치하도록, Ecosphere Technologies사는 군대를 위한 장비와 전 세계 다양한 재난 구조 기관에 제공하는 기업뿐 아니라, 미국 지사와 전 세계 군대를 포함한 폭넓은 독립체에 PowerCube의 특허권 협약을 체결할 수 있는 방안을 모색하고 있다.

Ecosphere Technologies announces completion of first PowerCube
US manufacturing company Ecosphere Technologies has announced the completion of the first Ecos PowerCube, a mobile, deployable solar powered generator.
As reported by Renewable Energy Magazine in November 2013 when the company was granted its patent by the US Patent & Trademark Office, the PowerCube is a mobile micro-utility that can provide solar electricity in remote locations. It was designed to help meet the growing demand for off-grid energy and incorporates an array of stacked solar panels in order to maximise the total amount of solar power generation possible in 10', 20' and 40' standard ISO shipping container footprints.
The device has power generation capabilities up to 15kW and can be used to power various on-board systems including wireless telecommunications, solar powered Internet, and mobile water treatment systems. Electricity generated by the PowerCube can be used to supply military or emergency response and disaster relief teams with life-sustaining, mobile infrastructure modules, such as hospitals, command centres, sleeping quarters, and temporary schools.

The device can be transported by land, air or sea and is ideally suited to support off-grid military, disaster relief, humanitarian and mobile communication operations. Unlike conventional solar power arrays, the solar modules can be retracted in order to protect them from inclement weather or hostile environments prevalent in war zones.
