| [핀란드] 태양 및 풍력발전, 가장 경제적인 에너지가 될 것으로 예상
새로운 연구에 따르면 미래에는 재생가능 에너지(Renewable Energy)에 완전히 의존하는 에너지 시스템이 경제적으로 실현 가능할 것으로 예상되었다. 핀란드 라페란타 기술대학(Lappeenranta University of Technology, LUT)에서 수행한 이번 연구는 북동 아시아와 중국이 향후 5~10년에 걸쳐 재생가능 에너지 시스템으로 완전히 전환한다면 충분한 이익이 있을 것이라는 결과를 보여주었다.
이번 연구를 수행한 Neo-Carbon Energy 프로젝트에 따르면 태양발전을 통해 생산하는 전기비는 2025~2030년 사이에 절반 수준으로 하락할 것으로 예상되었다. 지난 2014년 말 완료된 이 연구는 태양 및 풍력발전이 최대 에너지 시장인 아시아에 있어 가장 경제성 있는 에너지 생산 형태가 될 것이라는 결론을 내렸다. LUT의 Christian Breyer 교수는 아시아에서 가장 값싼 에너지를 생산하는 방법은 바로 재생가능 에너지를 이용하는 것이라 밝혔다.
전세계 최대 에너지 소비국인 중국은 에너지 생산 분야와 관련한 글로벌 기후 변화 이니셔티브의 기반이라 할 수 있다. LUT의 Pasi Vainikka 교수는 "중국은 막대한 바람 및 태양 에너지원을 보유하고 있다. 따라서 재생가능 에너지원을 기반으로 하는 전력 네트워크는 매우 빠르게 수익성을 확보할 수 있다. 이는 중국이 재생가능 에너지 시스템으로 전환해야 하는가에 대한 당위성을 부여한다. 중국은 이미 풍력 및 태양발전에 있어 전세계에서 가장 큰 규모의 투자자이기도 하다"고 밝혔다.
경제적 실현가능성은 재생가능 에너지원으로 전환을 이루는데 있어 극복해야 할 도전 중 하나이다. 이와 관련하여 태양에너지와 풍력에너지는 향후 5~10년 이내에 가용할만한 에너지원이 될 것으로 예상되었는데, 이는 태양 및 풍력발전 용량이 두 배로 증가할 때마다 비용은 약 20% 하락하는 모습을 보여주었기 때문이다. Vainikka 교수는 "예를 들어, 태양발전 전기 가격은 2025~2030년 사이에 거의 절반 수준이 될 것으로 보인다. 이러한 이유로 태양발전 전기는 전세계 대부분 지역에서 가장 값싼 에너지 생산 방안이 될 것"이라고 말했다.
Neo-Carbon Energy 프로젝트는 핀란드에서 유사한 에너지 시스템 구현 및 가능성에 대해 지속적으로 연구할 계획이다. 이 연구 프로젝트는 핀란드 국립기술청(Tekes)에서 지원을 받고 있으며, LUT, VTT 및 투르쿠 대학(University of Turku)의 협력을 통해 이루어지고 있다.
사실상 태양 및 풍력에너지는 거의 무한대로 가용하지만 문제는 이들의 공급이 균일하지 못하다는 것이다. 이러한 이유로 에너지 저장이 필요하기도 하다. Vainikka 교수는 "우리는 재생가능 에너지로의 전환과 관련한 제약사항에 대해 잘 알고 있다. 태양 및 풍력발전이 그리드 용량의 50%에 도달하게 되면 일 단위로 저장소에서 전기를 이송할 수 있는 거대한 내부 이송 공정이 필요할 것이다. 예를 들어 핀란드는 풍력이나 태양발전에서 생산된 에너지를 저장하였다가 겨울철에 이를 활용할 필요가 있다"고 설명하였다.
핀란드의 여름철에 발생하는 태양에너지는 합성 천연가스 형태로 저장이 가능하며, 현재 가스 네트워크를 저장 설비로 활용할 수 있다. Vainikka 교수는 이러한 공정을 실용화할 기술은 이미 알려져 있다고 밝혔다. 그는 "현재의 천연가스 기반시설을 이용하여 태양발전에서 생산되는 전기를 저장할 수 있다. 핀란드에는 아직 이를 위한 설비가 없지만 최근 합의한 신규 LNG 터미널 도입을 통해 이러한 일이 가능할 것"이라고 덧붙였다.

Solar and wind power will be the cheapest forms of energy in the future
A new study demonstrates that an energy system based completely on renewable forms of energy will be economically viable in the future. Within ten years, solar and wind power will be the cheapest forms of energy production for Asia's largest energy markets.
A new study demonstrates that an energy system based on completely renewable forms of energy will be economically viable in the future. Research done at Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) shows that it will be worthwhile for North-East Asia, and China in particular, to switch to a completely renewable energy system within 5-10 years. According to the Neo-Carbon Energy project, which conducted the research, the price of solar electricity will drop by half by 2025−2030.
Completed at the end of last year, the study concluded that within ten years solar and wind power will be the cheapest forms of energy production for Asia's largest energy markets. According to LUT Professor of Solar Economy Christian Breyer, this is because renewable energy is the cheapest way of producing energy in Asia.
Economic viability has been one of the challenges of making the transition to renewable energy sources and doing so on the terms of the market. The research now performed shows that sun and wind will become viable sources of energy within 5-10 years. This is due to the fact that costs fall by 20% every time capacity is doubled.
'This means, for example, that the price of solar electricity will be halved by 2025-2030. This will make them the cheapest forms of production for most of the world,' says Pasi Vainikka, Principal Scientist and LUT Adjunct Professor.
Similar simulations of renewable energy have not been performed earlier. The Neo-Carbon Energy project will continue researching the opportunities and implementation of a similar energy system in Finland.
The Neo-Carbon Energy research project is funded by Tekes and is being implemented as cooperation between LUT, VTT and the University of Turku. The research was recently selected as the best opening at a global solar energy conference in Japan.
