| [독일] 사료용 옥수수를 대체하여 바이오가스 생산에 활용 가능한 목초
사료용 옥수수(Silage Maize)로부터 바이오 가스를 생산하는 일은 붐(Boom)처럼 확산되고 있다. 그러나 이러한 녹색 에너지 생산에도 단점은 존재한다. 옥수수 단일재배는 식량생산과 관련한 대규모 토지 운영을 점차 어렵게 만들고 있으며, 단조로운 조경을 야기하고 있다. 이와 관련하여 경제성 단점만 만회할 수만 있다면 지금까지 사용되지 않았던 목초를 사료용 옥수수의 친환경적인 대체방안으로 활용할 수 있을 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과는 최근 독일 카를스루에 공과대학(Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, KIT)과 호헨하임 대학(University of Hohenheim)이 수행한 프로젝트를 통해 얻어졌다.
바이오가스(Biogas)는 에너지 생산에 있어 중요한 요소가 되고 있다. 지난 2014년 말에는 독일에서 약 8,000개의 바이오가스 설비가 운영되는 것으로 나타났다. 대부분의 설비는 사료용 옥수수를 공급원료(Feedstock)로 사용하고 있다. KIT에서 에너지 생산 관련 재생가능 자원 활용 전문가인 Ludwig Leible 박사는 "그러나 바이오가스 설비를 추가적으로 건설하는 일은 제약이 뒤따를 것으로 예상된다"고 설명하였다. Leible 박사는 옥수수 재배가 증가하는 일이 문제가 된다고 보고 있다. 바이오가스 생산을 위한 사료용 옥수수는 비옥한 농경용 토지를 활용하는데 있어 제약사항이다. 그리고 심미학적 관점에서 보면 경직된 조경이 점차 줄어들고 있다는 문제도 있다. Leible 박사는 "또한 비옥화(Fertilization)와 작물 보호와 관련한 대규모 비용이 필요하다"고 강조하였다. 목초는 이러한 문제를 대체하는 좋은 해결방안이 될 수 있다. 목초는 목초지 과수원이나 자연적으로 보호받는 지역에서 풍부하며, 생물학적 다양성과 조경의 단조로움을 피하는데 도움을 줄 수 있다.
바뎀뷔르덴베르크 농촌및소비자보호부(Ministry of Rural Affairs and Consumer Protection)를 대표하여 KIT의 기술영향평가기관인 ITAS는 호헨하임 대학 농업공학및바이오에너지연구소와 협력하여 자연적으로 생산되는 목초가 바이오가스 생산에 적합한지와 추가적인 비용의 발생 여부에 대해 조사하였다. 이들은 목초를 수집하여 바이오가스 설비에 사용하기까지의 전체 생산망에 대한 기술-경제성 분석 외에도 기질 처리 및 바이오가스 수율에 대한 기술적 연구를 수행하였다.
ITAS의 Ludwig Leible은 "이번 연구는 조경용으로 조성된 목초가 바이오가스 생산에 적합하다는 것을 확인시켜 주었다"고 말한다. 그러나 현재 독일 바이오가스 생산의 약 55%를 차지하고 있는 사료용 옥수수와 비교할 때 경제성 부분에서 단점이 있다. 이번 연구결과에 따르면 면적에 따른 수율이 낮다는 단점이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 목초를 수확하고 운송하는데 더 많은 작업 시간이 필요하고, 유기 건조물의 톤당 바이오가스 수율은 낮은 것으로 나타났다.
연구진이 바뎀뷔르덴베르크에 위치한 두 개의 대표적인 바이오가스 설비에 대해 계산한 결과에 따르면, 기존에 사용하던 사료용 옥수수의 20%를 목초로 대체하였을 때 헥타르당 200 유로의 면적 비용이 투입되면 경쟁력을 유지할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. Leible 박사는 "연구진은 추가적인 보조금이 필요하더라도 바이오가스 설비에 목초를 활용할 수 있기를 바라고 있다. 목초를 활용하는 일은 목초지 과수원을 보존하고, 조경을 보다 풍부하게 만드는데 기여한다"고 말했다.

Grass is an alternative to silage maize in biogas production
Production of biogas from silage maize booms. But this green energy production also has its drawbacks: Maize monocultures block increasingly large areas for food production and result in a monotonous landscape. So far unused grass from landscaping is an ecological alternative, if economic drawbacks are compensated. This is the result of a recent study of KIT and the University of Hohenheim, which focused on locations in Baden-Württemberg.
Biogas has become a major element in energy production. In late 2014, about 8000 biogas facilities were in operation in Germany. In most facilities, silage maize is used as feedstock. "Further construction of biogas facilities, however, will reach its limits," Dr. Ludwig Leible, expert for the use of renewable resources for energy production at the KIT Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS), says. The agronomist considers the increased cultivation of maize a problem. Silage maize for biogas production increasingly blocks fertile farmland and this may be considered a loss for our cultivated landscape from the esthetic point of view. "As it also requires a large fertilization and crop protection expenditure, we plead for a diversification," the agronomist emphasizes. Material produced by landscaping might be a real alternative. It is abundant on meadow orchards or in nature protection zones anyway and contributes to biodiversity and a reduction of landscape monotony.
On behalf of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Rural Affairs and Consumer Protection (MLR), ITAS, in cooperation with the State Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Bioenergy of the University of Hohenheim, studied whether grass produced by landscaping measures is suited for biogas production and which additional costs result. Apart from a techno-economic analysis of the complete production chain – from harvest to use at the biogas plant –, technical studies of mechanical substrate treatment and achievable biogas yields were made.
"The findings of our study," ITAS project head Ludwig Leible says, "confirm that material produced by landscaping measures is suited for biogas production." Compared to silage maize that presently has a share of about 55% in biogas production in Germany, however, competitive disadvantages exist. According to the study, this is due to smaller hectare yields – harvest and transport therefore take a comparably longer working time – and the smaller specific biogas yields per ton of organic dry matter.
According to calculations of the scientists for two exemplary biogas plants in Baden-Württemberg, competitiveness could be maintained by an additional area payment of about EUR 200 per hectare when replacing 20% of the previous substrate by landscaping grass. "Still, we plead for using material produced by landscaping measures in biogas facilities," Leible continues, "even though additional subsidies will be required. Use of landscaping grass contributes to preserving meadow orchards and generally enriches the landscape."
