Renewable energy knows no boundaries

Utilities have always done what they can to provide reliable power with what the resources they have available to them -- and around them. But with numerous transmission lines crossing borders, renewable energy is no longer something that is situational.

The latest transmission line will be the first to connect the United Kingdom to Norway -- and has the capacity to transmit up to 1,400 megawatts (MW) back and forth. The project is a partnership between National Grid and Norwegian transmission system operator Statnett SF, with the goal of furthering renewable energy on each side of the transmission line, as well as to bring different sources back and forth to the different areas.

The Interconnector Project will consist of 730 kilometers of subsea HVDC system with cables that will be the longest of their type in the world, with a 10 kilometer onshore route. It will also be comprised of twin cabling running the total length that will use around 1450 kilometers of cable. The line will run from Blyth in Northumberland on the UK side to Kvilldal in Rogaland on the Norwegian side.

"There is a huge program of work for us to undertake over the next five years to deliver what will be the world's longest interconnector," said Alan Foster, National Grid's director of European Business Development, in a statement. "...the benefits to both UK and Norway are also huge and when completed the link will deliver low carbon electricity for the UK and also add to security of supply for Norwegian consumers."

The ¢æ1.5billion project, known as the NSN Link, is the latest global project to transmit energy across borders -- to use resources to their fullest extent. The European Union (EU) has a goal of 20 percent renewables by 2020, and transmission lines are helping them reach the goal. The UK is working to meet their renewable quota through onshore and offshore wind, solar, hydro and bioenergy. They have also created unique systems to power their grid from wave energy.

Norway's main sources of renewable energy come from hydro, geothermal, and wind. According to nonprofit Wealth Knows No Boundaries, Norway would be at a 98 percent renewable rate due to their resources and capacity, but because they export much of their renewable energy, they are at a 24 percent renewable rate. The transmission line will help each country use the best source of renewable energy to them, even if they don't have the resources in their own country.
I
n May, the EU announced 15 grant agreements for infrastructure projects in Europe -- out of 34 total projects worth $725 million -- to increase renewable investment across their member states. There is construction underway across the European Union (EU) on numerous other transmission projects, including a line from Italy to France, one from Norway and Germany, and one from UK to Belgium.

The U.S. is also working to transmit energy across borders, including a project by Minnesota Power to bring energy back and forth between Canada and Minnesota's Iron Range, and another line to span Lake Erie from Ontario, Canada to western Eric County, Pennsylvania. The ITC Holdings Corp. project will transmit power back and forth between the countries through an underground cable.

In Europe, as well as across the world, transmission lineds are demonstrating that borders are not a limit to renewable energy consumption, and the Norway-UK project is the latest to show that. The link is expected to be in operation by 2021.
