[미국] 퍼세이크 밸리 워터 위원회, 노후화된 인프라 개선 발표

미국 뉴저지주에 위치한 퍼세이크 밸리 워터 위원회(Passaic Valley Water Commission, PVWC)는 클리프톤(Clifton), 퍼세이크(Passaic), 페터슨(Paterson), 로디(Lodi), 노스 알링턴(North Arlington) 및 프로스텍트 파크(Prospect Park) 내 고객에게 보다 나은 서비스를 제공하기 위해 수질 개선을 위한 변화를 추진한다고 밝혔다.

지난해 12월 21일, 짐 뮬러(Jim Mueller) PVWC의 전무이사는 노후화된 주철 수도관을 개량하여 개선하는 데 필요한 초기 조사를 시작하기 위해 이사회에 4건의 엔지니어링 계약을 요청하고 승인을 받았다고 밝혔다. 

뮬러 전문이사는 “전무 이사가 된 직후 통신 및 정부 간 업무 부서를 통해 PVWC 소유의 도시 세 곳 및 서비스를 제공하는 다른 지자체와 각각 분기별 회의를 마련하도록 요청했다”라며, "각 회의에서 제기된 문제점에 귀를 기울이고 해결책을 찾기 위해 노력하며, 필요한 경우 수도관 세척을 더 자주하기로 했다"라고 말했다.

이번 엔지니어링 계약은 약 100만 달러에 달하며, 조건과 대안을 평가하고 노후화된 주철 수도관을 교체하는 초기 작업에 착수 할 수 있도록 우선순위 계획을 개발하는 데 도움이 된다. 노후화된 배관을 개량해 수질을 개선하는 방안은 곧 1단계 작업을 추진하는 등 올해 말 완료될 예정이다. 수도위원회는 체계적인 맛, 냄새 및 색상 문제(systemic taste, odor and color issues)가 있는 우선순위가 높은 사항을 먼저 고려할 것이며, 또한 기존 및 미래 세대에 적합한 배관 크기를 보장하기 위해 물수요와 배관 용량을 평가할 것이다.

뮬러 전문이사는 “PVWC는 뉴저지에서 가장 큰 공공 수도 시스템 중 하나이며, 고객에게 깨끗한 식수를 제공하는 데 자부심을 가지고 있다"면서 "시스템 인프라를 개선하기 위해 노력하는 동안 고객이 보여준 인내에 감사한한다”라고 전했다.

Passaic Valley Water Commission will be making Improvements to its Aging Infrastructure

 

Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) customers in Clifton, Passaic, Paterson, Lodi, North Arlington and Prospect Park can expect to see changes to improve water quality.  On December 21, 2022, PVWC Executive Director Jim Mueller, asked the Board of Commissioners for and received approval of four engineering contracts to begin the initial studies necessary to make the improvements by upgrading aging cast iron water pipes.

“Shortly after I became Executive Director, I asked the Communications and Intergovernmental Affairs department to set up quarterly meetings with each of our three owner cities and other municipalities we serve,” said Mueller.  “At each meeting, I listen to issues, and we work to find solutions, some of which include more frequent flushing of water mains, if necessary.”

The engineering contracts, which total about $1 million dollars, are necessary to help evaluate conditions and alternatives and to develop a prioritization plan so the company can begin the initial phase of replacing aging cast iron water pipes in the ground. A plan to improve water quality by upgrading these aging pipes is anticipated to be complete by the end of 2023, including identifying the first phase of work to be executed soon after. The water commission will take into account high priority areas that have systemic taste, odor and color issues; and will also evaluate water demand and pipe capacity to ensure pipes are sized properly for existing and future generations.

“PVWC is one of New Jersey’s largest public water systems and the company takes pride in providing clean drinking water to its customers. We appreciate the patience our customers have shown as we work to upgrade our system infrastructure,” Mueller concluded.
