[영국] 리버사이드 컨트리 파크, 빗물 재이용해 화장실 물 사용

서던워터의 비즈니스 파트너십 펀드로부터 약 3만 파운드 지원받아 ‘빗물 탱크’ 설치

길링엄(Gillingham)에 위치한 리버사이드 컨트리 파크(Riverside Country Park) 자연보호구역은 서던워터(Southern Water)의 비즈니스 파트너십 펀드(Business Partnership Fund)로부터 3만 1천 파운드의 보조금을 받아 2천350리터의 새로운 빗물 탱크를 설치했다.

설치하는 데 단 2주가 소요된 이 빗물 탱크는 빗물을 모아 방문자 센터로 물을 공급해 화장실의 물을 내린다.  빗물은 변기 수조를 채우기 위해 자동으로 펌핑되며 물탱크가 비어 있으면 이 시스템은 수도꼭지에서 물을 사용하도록 전환된다. 

다니엘 보웬(Danielle Bowen) 리버사이드 컨트리 파크 매니저는 “리버사이드 컨트리 파크의 빗물포집 시스템에 대한 서던워터의 비즈니스 파트너십 펀드 후원은 공원의 물 사용량을 줄이고, 대중에게 물 절약 전략에 대해 알릴 수 있는 기회를 제공하며 기후변화에 맞서 싸우는 데 도움을 준다. 지속 가능한 자원 사용에 대한 이 ‘게임 체인저’를 받게 돼 감사하다”라고 밝혔다.  

킴벌리 턴불(Kimberley Turnbull) 서던워터의 수자원 효율성 관리자는 “서던워터는 이 혁신적인 빗물포집 솔루션에 대해 3만 1천 파운드의 보조금을 수여하기로 결정했다. 혁신적인 빗물 솔루션은 수도 요금을 절약하고 빗물을 재이용하는 데 도움이 된다”고 말했다.  

킴벌리는 또한 “물은 우리의 가장 소중한 자원 중 하나다. 매년 남동부의 인구는 증가하지만 이용 가능한 물의 양은 동일하게 유지된다. 여름이 점점 더 더워지고 강수량이 적어지면서 물 공급에 압력이 가해진다. 우리가 현재 속도로 소비를 계속한다면, 머지않아 수요가 공급을 넘어서게 될 것”이라며 “서던워터의 비즈니스 파트너십 펀드는 우리 지역의 물 효율성을 높이고 물을 절약할 수 있는 새로운 방법을 찾는 것을 목표로 하는 혁신적인 계획”이라고 말했다.  

한편, 서던워터의 비즈니스 파트너십 펀드는 켄트, 햄프셔(Hampshire), 서식스(Sussex) 및 와이트(Wight) 섬에 있는 기업의 물 효율성 아이디어를 모색한다. 아이디어 신청은 온라인으로 오는 6월 30일까지 가능하다.

Using rainwater to flush toilets

‘Rhino tank’  installed at Riverside Country Park in Kent Thanks to Southern Water’s Business Partnership Fund

 

The Riverside Country Park nature reserve in Gillingham is benefiting from a new 2,350 litre rainwater tank - which when filled up with rainwater from gutters, weighs as much as an adult white male rhinoceros.  

The Southern Water Business Partnership Fund reviews water efficiency ideas from businesses in Kent, Hampshire, Sussex and the Isle of Wight. Online applications are now open until 30 June 2024.   

The nature reserve received a ￡31k grant from the Business Partnership Fund, to install the rainwater tank. The installation, which took just two weeks, now harvests the rain so water can be pumped into the visitor centre to flush the toilets. 

Rainwater is pumped automatically to fill the toilet cistern. When the water tank is empty, the system switches over to use water from the mains. 

Danielle Bowen, Riverside Country Park manager said: “Southern Water’s Business Partnership Fund sponsorship of a rainwater harvesting system for Riverside Country Park is providing the park with the chance to reduce water usage, teach the public about water saving strategies and overall enables us to have a greater impact in fighting climate change. We really appreciate receiving this “game-changer” in sustainable resource usage.” 

Kimberley Turnbull, Water Efficiency Manager at Southern Water, said: “Our panel decided to award a grant of ￡31k for this innovative rainwater harvesting solution. With more people and less water to go round, innovative rainwater solutions save money on water bills and help towards re-using rainwater. 

“Water is one of our most precious resources. Every year the population of the Southeast grows but the amount of water available stays the same. Due to hotter summers and less rainfall, increased pressure Is put on our water supplies. If we keep consuming at our current rate, in time, demand will outstrip supply ? as there’s only so much we can take from our environment. The Southern Water Business Partnership Fund is an innovative scheme aiming to promote water efficiency in our region and find new ways to save water.”
