[영국] 서번트렌트, 영국서 가장 큰 MABR 공장 위탁운영

 

7월은 우스터셔(Worcestershire)의 서번트렌트(Severn Trent)의 레드디치 스페널 현장(Redditch Spernal site)에 듀폰 워터솔루션즈(DuPont Water Solutions )에서 10개의 옥시엠(OxyMem) MABR(membrane aerated biofilm reactor) 모듈이 설치되는 등 영국에서 하·폐수처리의 이정표를 세웠다.

이에 따라 이 중앙처리장은 '코로나10(COVID-19)' 전염병으로 인해 이 사이트에 대한 접근이 제한된 기간 동안 영국에서 가장 큰 MABR이 되었다.

이 플랜트는 주변 유역 지역의 하·폐수와 위성 발전소의 과잉 바이오솔리드(biosolids) 등을 처리한다. 서번트렌트(Severn Trent)는 향후 인구 증가와 보다 엄격한 암모니아 동의에 대한 고려로 공정 효율성 향상을 모색하게 되었다.

서번트렌트(Severn Trent)는 처리장 증설보다는 IFAS(통합 고정 필름 작동 슬러지 ;  (integrated fixed film activated sludge)) MABR 시스템으로 전환해 업그레이드를 선택했다.

DuPont OxyMem MABR 모듈은 단순히 현 공정의 질화 능력을 높이기 위해 이틀에 걸쳐 현장의 기존 음산화 영역으로 하향 조정되었다.

첨단 기술로 COD(화학적 산소요구량)와 암모니아 제거가 동시에 이뤄지며 설계 온도에서 질화화 속도가 MBR 기술보다 2∼3배 높다.

이 본격적인 설치는 버밍엄 북동부 외곽에 있는 서번트렌트 민워스(Minworth) 현장에서 12개월에 걸친 광범위한 시범 시행에 이은 것이다.

그곳에서 옥시엠 시스템은 활성화 슬러지에 적용되는 일반적인 0.3∼0.4kg의 TSS/kg COD와 비교하여 0.13kg의 TSS/kg COD에서 슬러지를 발생시킴으로써 그 가치를 입증하였다.

에너지 소비량은 낮고 폭기(aeration) 효율은 4.5kg O2/kWh로 기존 기술 대비 2∼3배 높은 효율을 보였다.

시범 설치와 성공적인 설치에 이어 저스틴 실버(Justin Silver) 혁신 프로젝트 매니저는 "서번트렌트는 강화된 하·폐수 기준을 충족하고 인구 증가에 부응하기 위해 활성 슬러지 플랜트를 개조 및 개량하는 비용 효율적인 방법으로서 MABR 기술의 잠재력에 흥분하고 있다"고 말했다.

듀폰 옥시엠(DuPont OxyMem) MABR 모듈로 업그레이드하면 프로세스를 방해할 필요 없이 장치를 쉽게 들어 올리고 내릴 수 있어 '플러그 앤 플레이(plug and play)' 특성이 큰 장점이다.

또한, 서번트렌트는 현재 건강 위기 중에 특히 중요한 모듈을 설치할 수 있으며, 이로 인해 외부 인력의 현장 진입에 일정한 제약이 생겼다.

듀폰(DuPont)의 옥시엠(OxyMem) 제품군 상무이사 존 맥코노미(John McConomy)는 "이 자급자족 솔루션의 모듈화는 쉽게 제자리에 떨어질 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 확장성이 있어야 한다는 것을 의미한다"고 말했다.

존 맥코노미(John McConomy)는 이어 "서번 트렌트는 그것이 재판에서 입증된 후 우리 시스템에 그들의 신뢰를 불어넣었다. 기존 인프라에 대한 투자를 강화하고 보호하는 저영향 지속 가능한 하·폐수처리 측면에서 시장을 선도하고 있다"고 덧붙였다.

Severn Trent commissions the UK’s largest MABR plant

 

 

July marked a milestone for wastewater treatment in the UK, with the installation of 10 OxyMem membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) modules from DuPont Water Solutions at Severn Trent’s Redditch Spernal site in Worcestershire.

This central treatment plant has thus become the largest MABR in the UK, all during a period of restricted access to the site due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The plant processes wastewater from the surrounding catchment area as well as excess biosolids from satellite plants. Consideration for future population growth and tighter ammonia consents led Severn Trent to look for improved process efficiencies.

Rather than expanding the plant, Severn Trent opted for an upgrade by converting it to an IFAS (integrated fixed film activated sludge) MABR system. 

DuPont OxyMem MABR modules were simply lowered into the existing anoxic zone on site, over a two-day period, to boost nitrification capacity of the current process.

The advanced technology offers simultaneous COD and ammonia removal, with nitrification rates 2-3 times greater than MBBR technology at the design temperatures.

This full-scale installation follows an extensive 12-month pilot trial at Severn Trent’s Minworth site on the northeastern outskirts of Birmingham.

There, the OxyMem system proved its value, producing sludge at just 0.13 kg TSS/kg COD applied compared to the typical 0.3 - 0.4 kg of TSS/kg COD applied for activated sludge.

Energy consumption was low and the aeration efficiency was 4.5 kg O2/kWh, two to three times more efficient than conventional technologies.

Following the pilot and successful installation, Justin Silver, innovation project manager said, “Severn Trent is excited at the potential for MABR technology as a cost-effective way to retrofit and upgrade activated sludge plants to meet tightening effluent standards and to cater for population growth.”

A major advantage of upgrading with DuPont OxyMem MABR modules is due to their “plug and play” nature, as the units can be easily lifted and lowered into place without the need to interrupt the process. 

Additionally, Severn Trent can install the modules which is particularly important during the current health crisis that has led to certain restrictions for external personnel to enter the site.

“The modularity of this self-contained solution means not only can it be easily dropped into place, but it is also scalable should needs change.”, said John McConomy, commercial director, DuPont’s OxyMem product line.

“Severn Trent have put their trust into our system after it proved itself in trials. They are leading the way in the market in terms of low-impact, sustainable wastewater treatment that enhances and protects the investment in existing infrastructure.”
