[영국] 템즈워터, 하수처리 혁신적 탄소중립 계획 발표

Ofwat 주최 ‘Water Breakthrough Challenge’서 우승…600만 파운드 획득 

사우스웨일즈대학·웰시워터 등과 하수처리 탄소중립 최첨단 생물공정개발 협력

템즈워터(Thames Water)가 이끄는 컨소시엄은 하수처리의 탈탄소화를 돕기 위해 잉글랜드(England)와 웨일스(Wales)의 상하수도사업본부인 오프왓(Ofwat ; Office of Water Service)이 주최한 첫 번째 ‘워터 브레이크스루 챌린지(Water Breakthrough Challenge)’에서 우승하여 상금을 600만 파운드 이상을 획득했다.

물산업은 영국에서 생산되는 전기의 2∼3%(약 200만 가구와 동일)를 소비하며 일반적인 하수 작업에서 소비하는 에너지의 약 55%는 하수처리에 사용된다.

사우스 웨일즈대학(University of South Wales), 웰시워터(Welsh Water), 사우스 웨스트 워터(South West Water), 유나이티드 유틸리티(United Utilities), 스코틀랜드 워터(Scottish Wate)r, 요크셔 워터(Yorkshire Water) 및 노섬브리아 워터(Northumbrian Water)로 구성된 컨소시엄은 함께 협력하여 하수처리에 필요한 에너지를 줄이기 위한 최첨단 생물공정(bioprocesses)을 개발울 위해 협력할 것이라고 밝혔다.

이 혁신적인 작업은 인(P)과 질소(N)를 포함한 유익한 자원을 회수하면서 이산화질소 배출량을 줄이고 2030년까지 탄소중립(net zero)이 되는 영국의 목표의 주요 부분을 형성할 계획이다.

템즈워터(Thames Water) CEO인 세라 벤틀리(Sarah Bentley)는 “탄소 발자국을 줄이는 방식으로 하수처리 프로세스에 대한 접근 방식을 변경할 수 있는 이 상을 받게 된 것을 기쁘게 생각한다. 미래를 혁신하고 형성하려는 우리의 추진력을 공유하는 7개의 훌륭한 조직과 함께 일할 수 있다는 것은 환상적이다. 저도 이 상을 받으신 모든 분들께 진심으로 축하의 말씀을 전하고 싶다. 진행 중인 모든 프로젝트의 결과를 보게 되어 매우 기쁘다”라고 말했다.

사우스 웨일즈 대학(University of South Wales)의 프로젝트 책임자인 산드라 에스테베스(Sandra Esteves) 교수는 “이 자금을 통해 팀은 새로운 개념 통합을 추진하고 사회의 하수 처리 에너지 발자국을 줄이고 지속 가능한 자원 회수를 촉진하는 데 미치는 영향을 평가할 수 있다”라고 말했다.

웰시워터(Welsh Water)의 하수 서비스 담당 수석 과학자인 미하엘 제라르도(Michael Gerardo)는 “하수처리 및 자원 회수에 있어 업계 전반의 변화를 가져오는 것을 목표로 하는 진정으로 협력적이고 혁신적인 부문 노력이다. 이는 결국 고객과 환경에 대한 진정한 이점을 실현하는 데 도움이 될 것입니다. 우리는 산업체, 공급업체 및 학계를 포함한 전문가 컨소시엄에 합류하게 된 것을 기쁘게 생각합니다. 혁신적이고 협력적인 방식으로 새로운 작업 방식을 수용하고 캡슐화할 것이라고 믿는다”라고 말했다.

워터 브레이크스루 챌린지(Water Breakthrough Challenge)는 오프왓(Ofwat) 및 네스타 챌린지(Nesta Challenges)가 아럽(Arup)과 협력하여 운영하며 올해 초 ‘물도전의 혁신(Innovation in Water Challenge)’에 이어 기금을 통해 자금이 지원되는 일련의 대회 중 두 번째이다.

에너지, 제조, 건강 또는 금융 서비스와 같은 분야의 대학 및 연구소, 소매업체, 신생 기업 또는 소규모 기업을 포함하여 물 부문 내외부의 조직과의 파트너십과 함께 잉글랜드와 웨일즈의 물회사의 참가가 장려되었다.

워터 브레이크스루 챌린지는 탄소중립(net zero), 누수 감소, 자연 생태계 보호, 고객, 사회 및 환경에 가치를 제공하기 위한 개방형 데이터 사용을 포함하여 물 및 하수 서비스가 직면한 가장 큰 문제를 해결한다.

워터 브레이크스루 챌린지는 미래에 고객, 사회 및 환경의 요구를 충족할 수 있는 혁신적이고 협력적인 물 부문을 만들려는 물 규제 기관 Ofwat의 목표에 기여한다. 이 챌린지는 물회사가 투자하거나 탐색할 수 없는 이니셔티브에 자금을 지원한다.

두 번째 (Water Breakthrough Challenge)는 10월 11일에 더 혁신적인 물 부문 이니셔티브를 위한 자금을 제공하기 위해 시작된다. 물 고객, 사회 및 환경에 혜택을 제공하는 출품작 간에 최대 3천500만 파운드를 공유할 수 있다.

Ofwat의 수석 이사인 존 러셀(John Russell)은 “에어버스와 마이크로소프트에서 런던 동물학회와 리버 트러스트에 이르기까지, 워터 브레이크스루 챌린지는 고객들을 위한 서비스를 개선하고 이 분야의 환경 발자국을 개선하기 위해 물 회사들과 흥미로운 협력 관계를 형성하도록 이끌었다. 수상자 각자는 전국의 고객의 이익을 위해 향후 수 년 동안 물 부문의 탄력성, 지속 가능성 및 효율성에 기여한다. 이러한 인상적인 수상자를 추천하는 데 있어 도전과 통찰력에 대해 독립적인 심사위원에게 감사드린다”라고 말했다.

네스타 챌린지(Nesta Challenges)의 뉴프론티어스 책임자인 홀리 제이미슨(Holly Jamieson)은  “워터 브레이크스루 챌린지에 대응하여 물회사, 학계, 엔지니어링 및 기술 부문에 의해 수립된 여러 분야의 협력은 매우 인상적이었다. 하수를 귀중한 천연자원으로 바꾸는 것에서부터, 부정적인 환경영향을 줄이고 물 고객의 비용을 절감하기 위해 개방형 데이터를 현명하게 사용하는 것까지, 오늘날의 기금은 영국의 물 산업에 있어 흥미로운 단계이다. 수상자 모두에게 축하를 드리며 앞으로 수개월 내에 프로젝트를 진행할 수 있기를 기대한다”라고 말했다.

Thames Water consortium wins ￡6 million for cutting-edge net zero innovation

A consortium led by Thames Water has won more than ￡6 million from Ofwat’s first Water Breakthrough Challenge to help decarbonise wastewater treatment. 

The water industry consumes between two and three per cent of the electricity produced in the UK - the same as around two million households - and around 55 per cent of the energy consumed by a typical sewage works is processing wastewater. 

The consortium, which also comprises the University of South Wales, Welsh Water, South West Water, United Utilities, Scottish Water, Yorkshire Water and Northumbrian Water, will work together to develop cutting-edge bioprocesses to reduce the energy required for wastewater treatment.  

The innovative operation will cut nitrous oxide emissions ? while recovering beneficial resources including phosphorus and nitrogen ? and will form a major part of the UK’s target to become net zero by 2030. 

Sarah Bentley, Thames Water CEO, said: “I’m passionate about leaving a legacy for future generations, just like the Victorians did for us. So, I’m delighted that we’ve won this award, which will allow us to change our approach to the wastewater treatment process in a way that will reduce our carbon footprint. 

“It’s fantastic to be able to work alongside seven great organisations who share our drive to innovate and shape the future.  

“I’d also like to offer my huge congratulations to all those who’ve been successful in these awards. I’m excited to see the outcomes on all of the projects being worked on.” 

Prof Sandra Esteves, project lead at the University of South Wales, said: “We have been at the forefront of R&D for anaerobic processes and recognise the importance that these bioprocesses can play in numerous sectors.  

“The funding will enable the team to drive the novel concept integration and evaluate its impact in reducing society’s wastewater treatment energy footprint and in promoting sustainable resource recovery.” 

Michael Gerardo, principal scientist, wastewater services, Welsh Water, said: “We’re proud to be jointly leading and supporting this sustainable wastewater treatment bid. This is a truly collaborative and transformative sector effort, with the aim to bring about industry-wide changes in wastewater treatment and resource recovery.   

“This in turn will help to realise the true benefit for our customers and the environment. We are pleased to be joining a consortium of specialists, including industry, supplier and academia; and believe it will embrace and encapsulate a new way of working in an innovative and collaborative way.” 

The Water Breakthrough Challenge is run by Ofwat and Nesta Challenges in partnership with Arup and is the second in a series of competitions funded through the Fund following the Innovation in Water Challenge earlier this year.  

Entries were encouraged from water companies in England and Wales, alongside partnerships with organisations within and outside the water sector, including universities and institutes, retailers, start-ups, or small businesses in sectors such as energy, manufacturing, health, or financial services. 

The Water Breakthrough Challenge tackles the biggest challenges facing water and wastewater services, including net zero, reducing leakage, protecting natural ecosystems, and using open data to deliver value to customers, society, and the environment. 

The Challenge contributes to water regulator Ofwat’s goal of creating an innovative and collaborative water sector that can meet the needs of customers, society, and the environment into the future. The Challenge funds initiatives that water companies would otherwise be unable to invest in or explore. 

A second Water Breakthrough Challenge will open for entries on October 11 to provide funding for further innovative water sector initiatives. Up to ￡35 million will be available to be shared between entries that deliver benefits for water customers, society and the environment.  

John Russell, senior director at Ofwat, said: “From Airbus and Microsoft to the Zoological Society of London and the River Trust, the Water Breakthrough Challenge has led to the formation of exciting partnerships with water companies to improve services for customers and improve the environmental footprint of the sector. Each of the winners contribute to the resilience, sustainability and effectiveness of the water sector in the years to come for the benefit of customers across the country. Thank you to the independent judging panel for its challenge and insight in recommending these impressive winners.”

From turning sewage into a valuable natural resource to the smart use of open data to reduce negative environmental impacts and reduce costs for water customers, today’s funding is an exciting step for the water industry in the UK. New innovation challenges will be announced through to 2025, however Ofwat’s goal is that the Innovation Fund’s impact will be felt well beyond this.
