[미국] EPA, 미국 가정에 '제14회 누수 보수 주간' 참여 권장

미국 환경보호청(EPA)의 워터센스(WaterSense) 프로그램과 프로그램 파트너들은 가정과 기업 주변의 배관 및 관개 누수를 찾아 수리하는 '제14회 누수 보수 주간(Fix a Leak Week)'에 미국인들에게 참여할 것을 권장하고 있다. 일반적으로 미국 가정은 누수로 매년 약 1만 갤런의 물을 낭비하고 있다. 그러나 이러한 누수의 대부분은 정기적인 유지보수를 통해 쉽게 해결할 수 있고, 보수할 수 있다.

워터센스 프로그램은 2006년부터 물 5조3천억 갤런, 에너지 6천30억kWh, 1천80억 달러의 소비자 물 및 에너지 요금을 절약하는 데 도움을 주었다.

앤드류 소이어(Andrew Sawyers) 하·폐수관리국장은 "집과 직장에서 누수가 없는지 확인하는 것은 환경과 지갑 모두에 도움을 주며 물 보존에 있어 우리 모두가 할 수 있는 쉬운 단계"라고 말했다. 이어 그는 "우리가 사용하는 물의 양을 줄임으로써, 우리는 그것을 치료하는 데 필요한 에너지의 양을 줄이고 물 공급을 강화하는데, 두 가지 모두 기후 변화의 영향을 줄일 수 있다"고 덧붙였다.

 

오는 3월 14일부터 3월 20일까지 열리는 누수 보수 주간은 EPA와 수도 시설 및 지방 정부를 포함한 프로그램 파트너들이 물 낭비를 통제하는 중요한 역할에 대해 소비자와 함께 참여할 수 있는 기회다. 화장실부터 수도꼭지, 샤워기, 실외 관개에 이르기까지 매년 약 1조 갤런의 물이 누수된다. 누수를 찾아 보수하는 방법에 대한 자세한 내용은 누수 보수 주간 홈페이지(https://www.epa.gov/watersense/fix-leak-week)에서 확인할 수 있다.

워터센스 인증 제품은 화장실과 수도꼭지에서 샤워기와 스프링클러까지 약 20%의 물을 덜 사용하고 표준 모델보다 성능이 우수한 제품을 뜻한다.

WaterSense Program Encourages Homeowners to Join Fix a Leak Week and Save Water

Since 2006, WaterSense has helped save 5.3 trillion gallons of water, 603 billion kilowatt hours of energy, and $108 billion in consumer water and energy bills

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) WaterSense program and its partners are encouraging Americans to participate in the 14th annual Fix a Leak Week, by finding and fixing plumbing and irrigation leaks around homes and businesses. The average household's leaks can account for nearly 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year, but many of these leaks can be easily avoided with regular maintenance or fixed when they are identified.

“Checking our home and workplace for leaks is an easy step we can all take to do our part in water conservation, helping both the environment and our wallet,” said Director of the Office of Wastewater Management Andrew Sawyers. “By reducing the amount of water we use, we reduce the amount of energy needed to treat it and strengthen our water supplies, both of which can reduce impacts of climate change.”

Taking place March 14 through March 20, 2022, Fix a Leak Week is an annual opportunity for EPA and its program partners, including water utilities and local governments, to engage with consumers on the important role they play in controlling water waste. From running toilets to dripping faucets and showerheads to outdoor irrigation systems, leaks waste nearly 1 trillion gallons of water a year. If any fixtures require replacement, look for models that have earned EPA’s WaterSense label. From toilets and faucets to showerheads and sprinklers, WaterSense labeled products are independently certified to use at least 20 percent less water and perform as well or better than standard models.
