[영국] 세벤 트렌트, Ofwat 물 혁신 챌리지서 우승자로 선정

세번 트렌트(Severn Trent)는 영국 잉글랜드 및 웨일즈 관할 상하수도감독청인 오프왓(Ofwat)의 최신 물 혁신 챌린지(Water Breakthrough Challenge)에서 우승자로 선정되어 3개의 획기적인 프로젝트에 대한 자금을 확보했다고 밝혔다.

물산업 및 폐기물 업체는 규제 기관의 주력 혁신 프로그램을 통해 총 160만 파운드를 수여받았다. 이 프로그램은 기업이 신기술을 사용하고 부문 간 협력을 구축하도록 장려하는 것을 목표로 한다.

이 3개의 프로젝트는 물 혁시 챌린지의 최신 라운드에서 규제 기관이 자금을 지원하는 전체 13개 업체 중 하나로, 여러 파트너와 함께 제공될 것이다. 

Ofwat이 최근 추진한 세 가지 프로젝트는 다음과 같다.

• 물중립 미래 촉진 - 이 프로젝트는 하수 처리 과정에서 온실 가스 배출을 줄이는 데 잠재적으로 도움이 될 수 있는 박테리아를 포획하는 혁신적인 기술을 개발할 것이다.

• 가정용 에너지 회수 장치(HERU) – 가정 및 상업용 폐기물을 현장에서 관리하기 위해 개발된 폐기물 회수 시스템이다. 체스트 냉동고만한 크기의 이 솔루션은 인공위성에서 개발한 히트 파이프 기술을 사용하여 스크린을 재활용 에너지로 바꾸는 방법을 모색한다.

• 수돗물 포렌식(Tap water forensics) – 이 프로젝트는 음용수 처리에서 유전자 염기서열 분석을 개발하는 것을 목표로 한다. 현재의 테스트와 달리 유전자 배열은 물 속에 존재하는 모든 박테리아 종을 결정할 수 있다. 이 새로운 접근 방식은 미래에 수질 조사의 속도와 정확성을 크게 향상시킬 것이다.

리치 월윈(Rich Walwyn) 세번 트렌트의 자산 인텔리전스 및 혁신 책임자는 "이 필수 자금은 우리가 세 가지 측면에서 파트너와 함께 추진할 수 있음을 의미하며, 이는 집합적으로 고객, 사회 및 환경에 상당한 혜택을 제공할 수 있다"고 말했다.

해리 암스트롱(Harry Armstrong) Ofwat 이사는 "이번 Ofwat의 물 혁신 챌린지를 통해 물 부문이 더 흥미롭고 영향력 있는 프로젝트를 제공하는 것을 보게 되어 기쁘다. 우승자는 모두 사람, 사회 및 자연 환경에 혜택을 줄 엄청난 잠재력을 가지고 있다. 이 프로젝트가 현실이 되고 우리가 일을 하는 방식에 실질적인 차이를 만들기 시작하는 것을 보게 되어 매우 기쁘다”고 말했다.

지금부터 여름까지 물 혁신 챌린지는 잉글랜드와 웨일즈 전역의 프로젝트에 최대 3900만 파운드를 지원한다. 물 혁신 챌린지는 Ofwat의 일련의 대회 중 하나이며, 아룹(Arup) 및 아일 유틸리티스(Isle Utilities)와 함께 네스타 챌린지(Nesta Challenges)가 운영하며 개인, 사회 및 환경에 도움이 되는 부문의 혁신과 협력을 주도하도록 고안됐다. 3천400만 파운드의 펀딩 수상자는 추후 발표될 예정이다.

Severn Trent named winners in Ofwat's Water Breakthrough Challenge

Severn Trent has secured funding for three ground-breaking projects, after being named a winner in Ofwat’s latest Water Breakthrough Challenge.

The water and waste company has been awarded a total of £1.6 million through the regulator’s flagship innovation programme, which aims to encourage companies to use new technology and establish cross-sector collaborations.

This trio of projects, which will be delivered alongside multiple partners, are among just 13 overall to be awarded funding by the regulator, in this latest round of the challenge.

The three projects recently given the go-ahead by Ofwat include;

• Catalysing a net-zero future – this project will look to develop innovative techniques for capturing bacteria that could potentially help reduce greenhouse gas emissions during the wastewater treatment process.

• The Home Energy Recovery Unit (HERU) – a waste recovery system developed to manage domestic and commercial waste on-site. About the size of a chest freezer, this solution will look to use heat pipe technology developed from satellites, to turn screenings into recycled energy.

• Tap water forensics – this project aims to develop the use of genetic sequencing in drinking water treatment. Unlike current tests, genetic sequencing can determine every bacterial species present in water. This new approach could significantly improve the speed and accuracy of water quality investigations in the future.

Between now and the summer, the Water Breakthrough Challenge will award up to £39m to projects across England and Wales. The Water Breakthrough Challenge is part of a series of competitions from Ofwat, and run by Nesta Challenges with Arup and Isle Utilities, designed to drive innovation and collaboration in the sector to benefit individuals, society and the environment. The winners of £34m of funding will be announced later in the Spring.
