[영국] 노섬브리아워터, 지역 전체 누수 줄이고 물 절약할 수 있는 파이프 발명

수도관 파거나 굴착할 필요 없이 ‘자가 치유(self-heal)’ 가능…지난 7월 뉴캐슬서 시험 성공적 

영국의 노섬브리아 워터(Northumbrian Water)는 수도관을 파거나 굴착할 필요 없이 ‘자가 치유(self-heal)’ 할 수 있는 새로운 발명품이 뉴캐슬에서 성공적으로 시험을 마쳤다.

최초의 솔루션은 지난 7월 노섬브리아워터 혁신축제(Northumbrian Water's Innovation Festival)에서 공개돼 시범 실시됐으며 현재 전 지역 운영팀에서 현장에서 테스트 중이다.

아직 ‘No-Dig(비굴착)’ 기술의 초기 단계이기는 하지만, 이 혁명적인 솔루션은 이미 팀들이 누수를 수정하고 도로와 포장 도로를 파지 않고 소중한 물을 절약할 수 있는 속도를 개선하는 데 도움이 되는 징후를 보여주고 있다.

No-Dig는 물(water)과 젤(gel), 미네랄(mineral) 등으로 구성된 용액으로 누수되는 파이프에 주입하는 방식이다. 무화학 용액이 파이프를 통과하여 구멍을 찾아 외부에서 파이프를 밀봉하여 누출을 차단하여 굴착, 도로 폐쇄 및 상수도에 미치는 영향을 방지한다.

노섬브리아 워터(Northumbrian Water)의 워터 네트워크 책임자인 짐 하위(Jim Howey)는  ‘아직 초기 단계이지만 우리는 이 프로젝트에서 정말로 긍정적인 진전을 보고 있으며, 우리는 그것이 미래에 우리와 모든 물 회사가 운영하는 방식을 완전히 바꿀 수 있다고 생각한다”고 말했다.

짐 하위 책임자는 이어 “여기에는 많은 잠재력이 있다. 누수는 물을 낭비할 뿐만 아니라, 굴착을 수행해야 하는 경우 고객에게 많은 혼란을 야기할 수 있다. 그러나 이렇게 하면 우리 프로세스에서 까다로운 단계가 제거된다”라고 강조했다.

그는 이어 “이것은 매우 창의적이고 혁신적인 솔루션이며 앞으로 프로젝트가 어떻게 진행될지 무척 기대된다”라고 덧붙였다.

이 아이디어는노섬브리아 워터 앤 오리진 테크(Northumbrian Water and Origin Tech)의 ‘2021 혁신 페스티벌(2021 Innovation Festival)’에서 개발되었으며, 이듬해 페스티벌에서 선보일 수 있도록 한 해 동안 더욱 발전되었다.

이 제품에 대한 추가 시험은 시튼 델라발(Seaton Delaval)과 보우번(Bowburn)을 포함한 북동부 지역의 살아있는 수도관에서 1년 동안 수행되었다.

그런 다음 팀은 수리가 얼마나 오래 지속되는지 모니터링한다. 이 기술은 미래에 누출을 찾고 수정하는 것과 관련하여 게임 체인저가 될 수 있다고 믿어진다.

Self-healing pipes set to reduce leaks and save water across the region

 

A brand-new invention that will allow water pipes to ‘self-heal’ without the need for digging or excavation has been successfully trialled in Newcastle.

The first-of-its-kind solution was unveiled and trialled at Northumbrian Water’s Innovation Festival last month (JUL) and is now being tested in the field by operational teams across the region.

While still being early days for the ‘No-Dig’ technology, the revolutionary solution is already showing signs of helping teams to improve the speed at which they can fix leaks, avoid digging up roads and pavements and save precious water. 

No-Dig is a solution made of water, gel and minerals and this is injected into pipes that are leaking. The chemical-free solution goes through the pipe, finds the hole and seals the pipe from the outside, blocking the leak - helping to avoid excavation, road closures and impact to water supplies. 

Jim Howey, Head of Water Networks at Northumbrian Water said : “It is still early days at the moment, but we are seeing some really positive progress in this project and we really do think it could completely change the way we, and in time all water companies, operate in the future. 

“There is a lot of potential here. As well as wasting water, leaks can also cause lots of disruption for customers if we need to carry out excavations - but this will eliminate that tricky step from our process.” 

“This is a very creative and innovative solution, and I can’t wait to see how the project progresses in the future.”

The idea was developed at the 2021 Innovation Festival by Northumbrian Water and Origin Tech, and was further developed over the course of the year to be showcased at the festival the following year.

Additional trials of the product have been carried out on live water mains across the North East over the course of the year, including in Seaton Delaval and in Bowburn. 

The teams then monitor how long the repair lasts - and it is believed that this technology could be a game-changer in respect to finding and fixing leakage in the future.

John Marsden, Commercial Director at Origin, said: “This is a brilliant solution because as well as eliminating the need to dig, there are no chemicals meaning that is completely safe as well.

“We are very excited to have been working on this project at the previous two Innovation Festivals, and hope to see the project go from strength to strength as it continues to be tested in the future.”
