[캐나다] 캐나다 애나벨 M. 레이슨, 2022 스톡홀름 주니어 물 상 수상

캐나다의 애나벨 M. 레이슨(Annabelle M. Rayson)은 유해한 녹조를 처리 및 예방법에 대한 연구로 권위 있는 '2022 스톡홀름 주니어 물 상(2022 Stockholm Junior Water Prize)'을 수상했다. 스웨덴의 빅토리아(Victoria) 왕세자비는 스톡홀름에서 열린 세계 물 주간 시상식에서 수상자를 발표했다.

유해한 녹조는 전 세계 수중 생태계를 위협하고 있으며, 수질과 수생태계의 다양성에 영향을 미치고, 데드존(dead zones)을 유발하며, 어업 및 관광 산업에 수백만 달러의 손실을 초래한다.

어업에 종사하는 레이슨의 아버지는 유해한 녹조로 인해 특정 지역에서 더 이상 어업 활동을 할 수 없게 되자 유해한 녹조를 처리하고 예방하는 방법을 찾기 위해 연구했다.

레이슨은 생물조작(biomanipulation)의 개념과 어떤 종류의 동물성 플라크톤(zooplankton)이 녹조를 처리하고 예방하는데 가장 좋은지를 연구했다. 이 공로로, 레이슨은 15세에서 20세 사이의 학생들이 주요 물문제에 대해 해결책을 제시하는 국제 대회인 스톡홀롬 주니어 물 상 수상자로 발표됐다. 

레이슨은 “현미경과 실험복을 입은 모습을 꿈꾸며, 세상의 모든 작은 마을의 어린 소녀들을 대표하는 다른 많은 훌륭한 학생들들과 함께 이곳에 오게 된 것은 큰 영광이다”라고 수상 소감을 전했다.

심사위원단은 “우승작은 다면적인 글로벌 문제에 대한 잠재적인 해결책을 가지고 있다. 이는 인간의 건강에 대한 문제일 뿐만 아니라 수로와 그 안에 사는 종(species) 에도 영향을 미친다. 공중 보건과 관련하여 우리가 직면한 과제 중 많은 부분이 수질과 밀접하게 연관되어 있으며, 헌신적이고 열정적이며 창의적인 수상자는 이 만연한 문제를 해결하기 위해 광범위하고 생물학적으로 영감을 받은 연구를 수행했다”고 전했다.

수상자는 세계 물 주간의 시상식에서 이 상의 공식 후원자인 스웨덴 빅토리아 왕세자비로부터 수상식을 가졌다.

스톡홀름 주니어 물 상은 1997년부터 스톡홀름 국제 수자원 연구소(Stockholm International Water Institute, SIWI)가 자일럼(Xylem)을 창립 파트너로 함께 매년 개최하고 있다.

토르니 홀그렌(Torgny Holmgren) SIWI 전무이사는 "스톡홀름 주니어 물 상 참가자들은 더 나은 미래와 물이 지혜로운 세상을 위해 진정으로 영감을 주고 중요한 기여를 하는 열정과 독창성을 보여준다"라며, 스톡홀름 주니어 물 상은 이러한 기여를 축하할 수 있는 훌륭한 기회이다"라고 전했다.

자일럼(Xylem)의 CEO인 패트릭 데커(Patrick Decker)는 “전 세계의 1만7천 명 이상의 자일럼의 동료를 대신하여 스톡홀름 주니어 물 상 2022 참가자 모두에게 박수를 보내며, 세계의 주요 물 문제를 해결하기 위해 열정과 혁신을 보여준다"라며, "이 학생들은 전 세계의 혁신가들이 물 문제를 해결하기 위해 대담한 아이디어와 확신을 가지고 함께 할 때 가능한 것을 구현함으로써 우리에게 영감을 준다”고 전했다.

Canadian Annabelle M. Rayson wins Stockholm Junior Water Prize 2022

 

Annabelle M. Rayson from Canada receives the prestigious 2022 Stockholm Junior Water Prize for her research on how to treat and prevent harmful algae blooms. HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden announced the winner during a ceremony at World Water Week in Stockholm.

Harmful algae blooms plague aquatic ecosystems around the world. They impact water quality and ecosystem diversity, cause dead zones, and cost the fishing and tourism industries millions of dollars.

Rayson’s father, a commercial fisherman, could no longer fish in certain areas due to harmful algae blooms, so her research to find a method to treat and prevent harmful algae blooms.

Rayson learned the concept of biomanipulation, and which species of zooplankton was best to treat and prevent algae blooms. For this, she was announced as winner of Stockholm Junior Water Prize,  an international competition where students between the ages of 15 and 20 present solutions to major water challenges.

“It’s an absolute honour to be here with so many other brilliant young people, representing all the small-town little girls out there, dreaming of her on microscope and lab coat. Hey girls, we can still make it.”

The Jury noted that “the winning entry has a potential solution for a multi-faceted global problem. It is not just an issue for human health, but it also affects water courses and the species that live within them. Of the challenges we face in terms of public health, many are intimately intertwined with water quality, and the winner – dedicated, passionate and creative – has conducted extensive, bio-inspired research to address this pervasive issue.”

The winner was presented with her prize during an award ceremony at World Water Week by HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, the Prize’s Official Patron.

The Diploma of Excellence was awarded to Laura Nedel Drebes and Camily Pereira dos Santos from Brazil, for their development of addressing the issue with period poverty – the inaccessibility to sanitary pads, with their development of sustainable and affordable sanitary pads from industrial by-products.

The People’s Choice Award went to Mishal Faraz from United Arab Emirates, completing the all-female line-up of winners.

The Stockholm Junior Water Prize has been organized every year since 1997 by the Stockholm International Water Institute, SIWI, with Xylem as Founding Partner.
