[영국] 서던워터, 햄프셔·아일오브와이트 지역 기업에 절수 인센티브 도입

서던워터(Southern Water)는 최근 햄프셔(Hampshire) 및 아일오브와이트(Isle of Wight) 지역 기업의 물절약을 위한 새로운 인센티브 계획 'You Save, We'll Pay'를 발표했다.

이 제도에 따라 기업은 올해 9월, 10월, 11월 물사용량(2019년 평균 사용량 대비)을 절약하면 수도요금의 10%, 20% 또는 25%를 할인받을 수 있다.

올해는 기록상 영국에서 가장 건조하고 더운 해로 테스트강(River Test)과 이첸강(River Itchen)의 수위는 계속해서 낮아지고 있다. 서던워터는 절수 인센티브 제도를 도입해 지역 기업과 적극적으로 협력함으로써 가을철 강 수위를 보호하기 위해 절수 인센티브 제도를 도입했다.

절수 인센티브 제도는 지난 8월 초 가구에 도입된 야외 세차, 정원 급수 금지(hosepipe ban) 조치인 임시사용금지(Temporary Use Ban)에 따른 가장 최근의 절수 조치다. 주거 고객은 10% 정도 사용량을 줄였고, 이제 기업은 총수요가 줄어들도록 제 역할을 다해야 한다. 이와 함께 서던워터는 그 어느 때보다 많은 수리 및 누수 복구팀을 두고 있으며, 320명 이상의 팀원이 2022년에 1만7천 건의 누수를 수리했다.

케이티 테일러(Katy Taylor) 서던워터 최고 고객 책임자는 "하천 수량이 전년 대비 훨씬 낮기 때문에 서던워터는 고객의 물공급을 보호하기 위해 모든 것을 해야한다. 이미 지역 사회가 호스파이프 금지를 지지하는 것을 보았고 이제 지역 기업에도 도움을 요청하고 있다"고 말했다.

이어 그는 “서던워터는 기업이 정상적인 비용 절감보다 절수하는 것에 대해 보상하기 위해 이 계획을 적극적으로 추진하고 있다"면서 "서던워터는 현재의 가뭄 상황의 도전에 대응함에 따라 지역사회 및 환경청과 긴밀한 협력을 통해 계속 할 것"이라고 덧붙였다.

‘You Save, We’ll Pay’ water-saving incentive scheme introduced for businesses in Hampshire and Isle of Wight

 

A new incentive scheme launched by Southern Water today is offering businesses in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight money off their bills in return for saving water.

Under the ‘You Save, We’ll Pay’ scheme, businesses will receive a discount of 10%, 20% or 25% of their wholesale water charges if they save the equivalent amount of water in September, October and November this year (compared to 2019 average usage pre-covid).

Water levels of the River Test and River Itchen continue to fall amid one of the UK’s driest and hottest years on record. By proactively working with local businesses in this way, Southern Water hopes to avoid the potential need to impose further restrictions on businesses to protect river levels later in the autumn.

The incentive scheme is the latest water-saving step to follow the Temporary Use Ban (also known as a hosepipe ban), which was introduced for households in early August. Residential customers have reduced their use by about 10%, now businesses need to play their part so that total demand drops. Alongside this, Southern Water has more fix-and-repair leakage teams on the ground than ever before – more than 320 team members, who have fixed 17,000 leaks and counting in 2022.

Katy Taylor, Chief Customer Officer for Southern Water, said: “River flows are much lower than they should be for this time of year so we must do everything possible to protect our environment and customers’ water supplies. We have already seen our communities stepping up to support the hosepipe ban and we are now calling on local businesses to help too.

“We are proactively rolling out this scheme to reward businesses for using less water, over and above their normal cost savings. By working together we can avoid further restrictions and protect river levels.

“We will continue to work in close partnership with our communities and the Environment Agency as we respond to the challenge of current drought conditions.”

Southern Water’s multi-million-pound Water for Life – Hampshire programme includes a new reservoir being built in Havant Thicket, due to be operational by 2029. Under a separate proposal from the current, approved plans for Havant Thicket Reservoir, purified recycled water will pass into the reservoir before being further treated and distributed to customers via Otterbourne Water Supply Works. The Hampshire Water Transfer and Water Recycling Project is subject to further consultation and planning approvals.
