[미국] 연방국토개발국, 'More Water, Less Concentrate Challenge'  우승자 발표

연방국토개발국(The Bureau of Reclamation)은 내륙 담수화 플랜트에서 농축수의 양을 줄이고 더 많은 사용 가능한 물을 생성하기 위해 혁신적이고 저렴하며 환경적으로 건전한 솔루션을 개발하고자 하는 경연 대회인 'More Water Less Concentrate Challenge'의 수상자를 선정, 25만 달러를 수여했다고 밝혔다.

말린다 카펠(Malynda Cappelle) 브랙시 지하수 국립 담수화 연구시설 관리자는 "미국 서부 전역의 기존 담수 공급원은 종종 과도하게 할당되고 높은 비용으로 인해 담수화가 간과되는 경우가 많다"면서 "전통적인 물 공급원이 충분하지 않은 경우 저렴하고 환경적으로 지속 가능하며 효율적인 옵션”이라고 말했다.

결선 진출자들은 7일간 Yuma 담수화 플랜트에 있는 연방국토개발국 수질개선 센터에서 시연 및 테스트를 위해 완성된 프로토타입을 배포했습니다. 전문가 패널은 이벤트 기간 동안 수집된 데이터, 관찰 및 전문적인 판단을 사용하여 프로토타입을 평가했다.

연방국토개발국은 Team Olin - Harmony - MIT를 우승자로 선정, 15만 달러의 상금을 수여했다. 또한 시제품 테스트 성능, 혁신성 및 본격적인 구현 가능성을 기준으로 선정된 최종후보자 △퍼시피카 워터 솔루션(Pacifica Water Solutions) △AIL리서치(AIL Research) △㈜멤브리온(Membrion, Inc.) △텍사스대 엘패소 내륙 담수화 시스템 센터(University of Texas at El Paso Center for Inland Desalination Systems) 등 4팀에개 총 10만 달러를 수여했다.

Reclamation awards $250,000 to winners of the More Water, Less Concentrate Challenge

 

The Bureau of Reclamation selected winners for the More Water Less Concentrate Challenge, a prize competition that seeks to develop innovative, affordable, and environmentally sound solutions to reduce the volume of concentrate and generate more usable water from inland desalination plants.

“Across the Western United States existing fresh water sources are often over-allocated and desalination is often overlooked because of the perceived high cost,” said Malynda Cappelle, Brackish Groundwater National Desalination Research Facility manager “This competition seeks out innovative solutions to make desalination an affordable, environmentally sustainable, and efficient option where traditional sources of water are inadequate.”

Finalists deployed their completed prototypes for demonstration and testing at Reclamation's Water Quality Improvement Center at the Yuma Desalting Plant for seven continuous days. A panel of experts evaluated prototypes using data collected during the event, observations, and professional judgment.

Reclamation selected Team Olin - Harmony - MIT as the winner and awarded a prize of $150,000. Reclamation divided the remaining $100,000 prize purse among the following four finalists based on prototype testing performance, innovation, and potential for full-scale implementation.

- Membrion, Inc. 

- University of Texas at El Paso Center for Inland Desalination Systems
