Desalination and KAUST Strengthen Cooperation in Manufacturing Promising Economic Technologies


A specialized research team from the Institute for Research, Innovation and Desalination Technologies, part of the Saline Water Desalination Corporation (SWCC), visited King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) on Thursday, and the move comes in the context of strengthening the successful relationship between the two sides and activating it in a way that enables the follow-up of joint projects in the field of water technology development, exchange of experiences, knowledge transfer and training, to achieve sustainability in the desalination industry and enhance the security of water supply.


The two sides discussed the activation of research partnerships of mutual interest, which included promising desalination technologies, ongoing research activities in the field of membrane manufacturing, as well as research interests in the field of membrane selection of elements with economic return, and future cooperation opportunities, through several joint programs and initiatives.


Eng. Ali Al-Sahari, Head of the Research and Consulting Department at the Institute of Research, Innovation and Desalination Technologies, explained that the visit comes within the framework of the role to which Tahlia is committed in building and strengthening partnerships, and unifying research efforts with Saudi universities. 


He pointed out that the discussions between the two parties addressed research interests related to promising desalination technologies, the manufacture and improvement of membranes, the development of a new composition of membranes that achieve higher efficiency and lower economic cost, in addition to discussing the development of the new generation of them and determining the testing of membranes suitable for the uses of the desalination industry.


For his part, Dr. Johannes Freunfelder, Director of the Water Research and Reuse Center at the University, explained the need to redouble research efforts between the academic and industrial sectors to explore promising technologies in the field of desalination of desalinated water, praising the effective contribution of desalination in promoting innovation in research projects, and its role in innovating environmentally friendly technologies that reduce cost, increase productivity and raise efficiency.


At the end of the visit, the research team of the Institute of Research, Innovation and Desalination Technologies inspected the facilities of the Water Reuse Research Center at the university, and the laboratories and experimental stations that included it, as well as the latest developments on research and innovative technologies.


It is worth mentioning that Tahlia pays special attention to building local and international strategic partnerships with the relevant authorities from universities and research institutes, activating meaningful research cooperation, and integrating academic and industrial expertise, to find innovative and sustainable solutions to many of the challenges facing the desalination industry now and in the future, and to contribute effectively to sustainable development.
