제벨 알리 발전 및 담수 생산단지, 하루 222만7천587㎥의 담수 및 9천547MW 전기 생산

두바이 수전력청(DEWA)은 하루 4억9천만 임페리얼 갤런(Imperial Gallon, 약 222만7천587㎥)의 물을 생산할 수 있는 세계 최대 규모의 단일 담수화 시설을 소유 및 관리하여 두 번째로 기네스(Guinness) 세계 기록을 달성함으로써 또 다른 돌파구를 마련했다. 

이것은 제벨 알리 발전 및 담수 생산단지(Jebel Ali Power Generation & Water Production Complex)에 대한 두 번째 세계 기록이다. 2021년에 이 복합단지는 기네스북 세계 기록에 의해 세계 최대 단일 사이트 천연가스 발전시설로 확인되었다. 단지의 발전용량은 9천547MW(메가와트)이다.

DEWA의 HE 사이드 모하메드 알 타이어(HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer) MD 겸 CEO는 “UAE 부통령 겸 총리이자 두바이 통치자인 셰이크 모하메드 빈 라시드 알 막툼(Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum) 국왕의 비전과 지시에 따라 우리는 가용성, 신뢰성, 효율성 및 품질의 최고 기준에 따라 서비스를 제공한다”라면서 “우리는 또한 증가하는 전기 및 수도 서비스 수요와 두바이의 야심찬 도시 및 경제 계획에 발맞추기 위해 다양한 야심찬 개발 계획을 달성하기 위해 노력하고 있다”고 말했다. 

알 타이어 CEO는 특히 “우리는 모든 분야와 모든 수준에서 탁월함을 향한 여정을 계속하고 있으며, 향후 50년을 준비하고 지속 가능한 미래를 구축하기 위해 꾸준히 나아가고 있다”라면서 “이는 UAE가 2071년에 창립 100주년을 맞아 ‘세계 최고의 국가로 만들겠다’는 UAE 100주년 2071 목표를 지원한다”라고 강조했다.

알 타이어 CEO는 DEWA가 주최한 ‘제24회 물, 에너지, 기술 및 환경 전시회(WETEX) 및 두바이 태양광 쇼 2022’에서 기네스 세계 기록 대표자들로부터 인증서를 받았다.

알 타이어 CEO는 “DEWA가 MSF 플랜트보다 에너지를 덜 소비하는 역삼투 기술을 사용하여 해수를 담수화하기 위해 깨끗한 태양 에너지를 사용하고 과도한 담수 생산을 저장하는 ASR(Aquifier Storage and Recovery) 프로젝트를 통해 해수를 담수화함으로써 물 생산을 유지하기 위해 3개의 기둥을 채택했으며, 지하 분지에서 필요에 따라 회수하여 물 네트워크로 다시 펌핑한다”고 설명했다. 

이 혁신적인 전체론적 모델은 환경을 보존하고 지속가능한 경제 솔루션을 나타낸다. 또한 미래를 예측하고 형성하는 두바이의 능력을 강조한다. 2025년까지 완공되면 이 프로젝트는 60억 임페리얼갤런(2천736㎥)의 물을 저장하고 필요할 때 회수할 수 있게 하여 세계에서 가장 큰 비상 식수 저장 공간이 될 것이다.

이 기술은 비상시 90일 동안 매일 5천만 갤런(18만9천270㎥) 이상의 물을 에미리트에 공급하는 동시에 저장된 물의 안전을 보장하는 전략적 비축을 제공한다.

DEWA의 발전 부문 수석 부사장인 나세르 로타(Nasser Lootah)는 “기네스북(Guinness Book)에 등재된 것은 DEWA가 지난 수십 년 동안 점진적으로 가장 큰 담수화 시설을 건설한 성과를 기념하며 이러한 대규모 담수화 시설을 관리하는 우리 팀의 기술적 능력과 엄청난 노력을 인정한다”고 말했다. 

DEWA는 현재 D-, E-, G-, K-, L 및 M 스테이션에서 총 427MIGD(194만7천120㎥)의 물을 생산할 수 있는 43개의 MSF(Multi-Stage Flash) 담수화 장치를 보유하고 있다. 또한 63MIGD928만 7천280㎥)의 생산 능력을 갖춘 2개의 SWRO(해수 역삼투 담수화) 시설이 있다. DEWA의 총 담수화 생산 능력은 제벨(Jebel Ali) 발전소 및 담수화 단지에서 490MIGD(222만7천587㎥)이다.

DEWA의 비즈니스 개발 및 우수 경영 부사장인 왈리드 빈 살만(Walleed Bin Salman)은“우리는 DEWA의 권위 있는 글로벌 업적 기록에 추가된 이 새로운 글로벌 인지도를 자랑스럽게 생각합니다. 4차 산업혁명의 최신 기술에 투자한다”라면서 “우리는 전 세계 모든 분야에서 최고의 유틸리티 중 하나인 DEWA의 위치를 공고히 하기 위해 일상 업무에서 선구적인 우수성, 창의성 및 혁신을 채택하고 우수성과 리더십의 고급 단계에 착수한다”고 강조했다. 

DEWA는 2030년까지 SWRO 생산 능력을 303MIGD(138만1천680㎥)로 늘리는 것을 목표로 하고 있다. 현재 점유율 13% 대신 42%에 도달했다. 담수화 생산 능력은 2030년에 730MIGD(332만 8천800㎥)에 도달한다.

SWRO 담수화 플랜트는 MSF 플랜트보다 에너지가 덜 필요하다. 이 기술을 사용하는 DEWA의 최신 프로젝트 중 하나는 40MIGD(18만2천400㎥)의 생산 능력과 8억9천700만 AED(약 3천470억2천240만 원)에 상당하는 투자가 있는 제벨 알리 케이 스테이션(Jebel Ali K-Station)이다.

DEWA’s Jebel Ali Power Plant and Water Desalination Complex enters Guinness World Records for the second time

 

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has marked another breakthrough by achieving the Guinness World Records title for the second time for owning and managing the Largest Single-Site Water Desalination Facility in the World with production capacity of 490 million Imperial Gallons of water per Day, which is equivalent to 2,227,587 Cubic Metres per Day. 

This is the second world record for Jebel Ali Power Generation & Water Production Complex. In 2021, the Complex was confirmed by Guinness World Records as the Largest Single-site Natural Gas Power Generation Facility in the World. The Complex has a power generation capacity of 9,547MW.

“In line with the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, we are working to provide state-of-art and integrated infrastructure for electricity and water to provide our services according to the highest standards of availability, reliability, efficiency, and quality.

Al Tayer received the certificate from representatives of the Guinness World Records during the 24th Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX) and Dubai Solar Show 2022, which was organised by DEWA.

Al Tayer explained that DEWA adopts three pillars to sustain water production by using clean solar energy to desalinate seawater using reverse osmosis technology, which consumes less energy than MSF plants and Aquifier Storage and Recovery (ASR) project through which, excess desalinated water production is stored in underground basins, retrieved and pumped back into the water network as needed. 

This innovative holistic model preserves the environment and represents a sustainable economic solution. It also underlines Dubai’s ability to anticipate and shape the future. When completed by 2025, this project will allow 6,000 million imperial gallons of water to be stored and retrieved when needed, making it the largest emergency potable water storage in the world. 

This technology will provide a strategic reserve that will supply the Emirate with more than 50 million imperial gallons of water per day for 90 days in emergencies, while ensuring the safety of the stored water.

Nasser Lootah, Executive Vice President of Generation Division in DEWA, said the entry into Guinness Books of World Records celebrates DEWA’s acheivements during past decades in progressively building the largest desalination facility and also recognizes the technical capability and tremendous efforts of our team that manages such large industrial complex. 

DEWA currently has 43 Multi-Stage Flash (MSF) water desalination units with a total production capacity of 427 MIGD of water at the D-, E-, G-, K-, L, and M Stations. It also has 2 SWRO plants with a production capacity of 63 MIGD. DEWA’s total production capacity of desalinated water is 490 MIGD at the Jebel Ali Power Plant and Desalination Complex.

DEWA aims to increase its SWRO production capacity to 303 MIGD by 2030; reaching 42% instead of its current share of 13%. The desalinated water production capacity will reach 730 MIGD in 2030. 

SWRO desalination plants require less energy than MSF plants. One of DEWA’s latest projects using this technology is at the Jebel Ali K-Station, which has a production capacity of 40 MIGD and investments worth AED 897 million.
