[미국] WSSC 워터, 하수시설 우수성 인정받아 수상

세네카 하수처리시설, 영양소 제거로 물환경연맹으로부터 국제상 수상

미정수협회, WSSC 워터 5개 시설에 최고성능상 수여…수십년 연속 우수성 지속

WSSC 워터(WSSC Water)는 자사의 수자원 회수 시설(Water Resource Recovery Facility, WRRF)(이전에 하수처리시설로 불림) 중 5개 시설이 물환경연맹 및 미국정수협회로 부터 뛰어난 성능을 인정받아 상을 수여받았다고 밝혔다. 

물환경연맹(Water Environment Federation, WEF)이 매년 수여하는 프로젝트 우수상은 물 부문 프로젝트 및 프로그램의 실행 우수성과 혁신에 찬사를 표하는 상이다. WSSC 워터의 세네카 WRRF(Seneca WRRF)는 물환경연맹으로 부터 프로젝트 우수상을 수여받았다. 

WSSC 워터의 세네카 WRRF는 암모니아 기반 폭기 및 펌핑 감소로 에너지 및 화학 비용을 절감하면서 질소(N)와 인(P)을 효과적으로 제거하는 새로운 과학 기반 최적화 접근 방식을 성공적으로 구현한 공로를 인정받아 상을 수여 받았다. 전체 시설에서 이 공정을 성공적으로 구현하면 WSSC 워터가 탄소 발자국을 줄이고 연간 57만5천 달러를 절약하는 데 도움이 된다. WSSC 워터가 이 공정을 다른 시설로 확대하고자 함에 따라, 전국의 하수 업계는 이러한 혁신적인 처리 방식을 고려하고 있다.

WSSC 워터는 브라운 앤 콜드웰(Brown and Caldwell) 및 노스웨스턴 대학교(Northwestern University)와 협력해 혁신적인 처리 접근 방식을 구현했다. 

또한 미국정수협회(National Association of Clean Water Agencies, NACWA)는 연방 허가 제한 및 「청정수법(Clean Water Act)」 표준을 준수하는 데 있어 탁월한 성과를 거둔 시설에게 최고 성능상(Peak Performance Award)을 수여하고 있다. 미국정수협회는 최근 WSSC 워터에게 최고 성능상은 수여했다. WSSC 워터는 다음 부문에서 상을 받았다.

-5년 이상 지속적으로 완벽한 규정 준수를 달성한 시설에 대한 플래티넘.

-연간 100% 규정 준수를 달성한 시설에 대한 골드

최고 성능를 받은 5개의 WSSC 워터의 시설은 다음과 같다.

-다마스쿠스 WRRF(Damascus WRRF) – 플래티넘, 22년 연속 수상

-파크웨이WRRF(Parkway WRRF) – 플래티넘, 16년 연속 수상

-세네카WRRF(Seneca WRRF) – 플래티넘, 16년 연속 수상

-하얏트타운 WRRF(Hyattstown WRRF) – 플래티넘, 11년 연속

-웨스턴 브렌치 WRRF(Western Branch WRRF) – 골드, 1년차

WSSC Water Recognized for Wastewater Excellence

Seneca Facility Receives International Award for Nutrient Removal  

Water Resource Recovery Facilities’ Decades-long Streak of Excellence Continues 

 

Two leading water industry organizations recognized five of WSSC Water’s water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs - formerly known as wastewater treatment plants) for outstanding performance.  

The Water Environment Federation (WEF) awarded WSSC Water’s Seneca WRRF the Project Excellence Award. WEF’s annual Project Excellence Award pays tribute to excellence and innovation in executing projects and programs in the water sector.  

WSSC Water’s Seneca WRRF received the award for successfully implementing a new science-based optimization approach using ammonia-based aeration and reduced pumping to effectively remove nitrogen and phosphorus while reducing energy and chemical costs. The successful implementation of this process throughout the entire facility will help WSSC Water decrease its carbon footprint and save approximately $575,000 a year. As WSSC Water looks to expand this process to other facilities, the wastewater industry across the country is considering this innovative treatment approach.  

WSSC Water worked with Brown and Caldwell and Northwestern University to implement the innovative treatment approach. More information about the benefits of the project is here. 

Additionally, the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) recently presented WSSC Water with its Peak Performance Awards.  

NACWA’s Peak Performance Awards are earned by facilities that have demonstrated extraordinary success in complying with their federal permit limits and Clean Water Act standards. WSSC Water received awards in the following categories: 

Platinum for facilities that have consistently achieved perfect compliance for five or more years. 

Gold for facilities that achieve 100 percent compliance in a calendar year 

The five WSSC Water facilities that received Peak Performance are: 

Damascus WRRF – Platinum, 22nd consecutive year  

Parkway WRRF – Platinum, 16th consecutive year 

Seneca WRRF – Platinum, 16th consecutive year 

Hyattstown WRRF – Platinum, 11th consecutive year  

Western Branch WRRF – Gold, 1st year
