[미국] 워터미션, 재해·전쟁지역에 안전한 물 공급 앞장

우크라이나 4개 도시에 25개의 안전한 수도 시스템 설치

파키스탄 대홍수로 피해를 입은 이재민들에게 안전한 식수 공급

미국 사우스캐롤라이나주 노스 찰스턴에 있는 비영리 기독교 엔지니어링 단체인 워터미션(Water Mission ; https://watermission.org/)은 개발도상국 및 재난 지역의 사람들을 위한 안전한 물, 위생 및 보건 증진(water, sanitation, and hygiene)을 위해 앞장서고 있다.

워터미션에서 재난에 대응하는 것은 우리 일의 필수적인 부분이다. 재해 발생 후 초기에는 식수, 위생 및 보건 증진을 위해 깨끗하고 안전한 물에 접근하는 것이 중요하다.

워터미션(Water Mission)은 1998년 온두라스 허리케인 ‘미치(Mitch)’의 여파로 안전한 물이 필요해서 탄생했다. 그 초기 대응 이후, 워터미션(Water Mission)은 자연 재해와 인도주의적 위기 이후 계속해서 구호품을 제공하고 있다.

지난 2월 말 우크라이나 전쟁이 시작되었을 때, 워터미션은 다시 한번 비상 대응에 대한 깊은 경험을 활용했다. 우리는 분쟁의 영향을 받는 사람들의 안전한 식수, 위생 및 보건 증진을 위한 요구사항을 평가하기 위해 그 지역에 팀을 보냈다.

9월 현재 우크라이나의 워터미션과 그 파트너들은 미콜레이브(Mykolaiv), 포크로브스크(Pokrovsk), 크라마토르스크(Kramatorsk), 미르노흐라드(Myrnohrad) 등 4개 도시에 25개의 안전한 수도 시스템을 설치했다. 이러한 시스템은 이미 진행 중인 위기의 영향을 받는 사람들을 위해 130만 갤런(5백만 리터) 이상의 안전한 물을 생산했다.

파키스탄에서도 몬순 폭우로 홍수가 발생해 파키스탄의 3분의 1이 물에 잠겼을 때 워터미션이 대응하고 있다. 우리의 신속한 대응은 임시 대피소에 살고 있는 수천 명의 국내 이재민들에게 깨끗하고 안전한 물을 제공했다.

워터미션과 함께 많은 구호단체 및 사람들의 성원 덕분에 워터미션는 물 처리 시스템, 정수 용품, 위생 키트의 긴급 출하를 제공할 수 있었다. 지난 9월 20일 현재, 파키스탄의 신드(Sindh) 지방에 있는 우리 팀은 여러 개의 안전한 물 처리 시스템을 설치했다. 각 시스템은 매일 500가족에게 충분한 안전한 물을 제공할 수 있다.

신드 지역 주민들은 이제 안전한 물을 접할 수 있고 안전한 물을 쉽게 구할 수 없을 경우 재난 이후 더욱 만연하는 위험한 수인성 전염병을 피할 수 있다. 워터미션은 파키스탄으로 가는 또 다른 선적이 있다는 것을 소식을 전하게 되어 기쁘게 생각하고 있다.

워터미션의 한 관게자는 “워터미션은 한 번에 여러 인도주의적 위기에 대응할 수 있는 위치에 있는 것을 축복한다. 많은 구호단체 및 사람들의 성원 덕분에 워터미션은 우크라이나에서 진행 중인 분쟁의 영향을 받은 사람들뿐만 아니라 파키스탄의 대홍수로 인해 실향민들에게 안전한 물을 제공할 수 있었다”라고 말했다.

Disaster Response Update: Safe Water is Flowing in Pakistan and Ukraine Thanks to Supporters Like You

At Water Mission, responding to disasters is an integral part of our work. In the initial days following a disaster, access to clean, safe water for drinking, hygiene, and sanitation is critical.

Our ministry was born out of the need for safe water following the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch in Honduras in 1998. Since that initial response, Water Mission has continued to provide relief in the wake of natural disasters and humanitarian crises.

When the conflict in Ukraine began in late February, Water Mission once again tapped into its deep experience in emergency response. We sent a team to the region to evaluate the safe water, sanitation, and hygiene needs of those impacted by the conflict.

As of September, Water Mission and its partners in Ukraine had installed 25 safe water systems across the four cities of Mykolaiv, Pokrovsk, Kramatorsk, and Myrnohrad. These systems have already produced more than 1.3 million gallons (5 million liters) of safe water for those impacted by the ongoing crisis.

Water Mission is also responding in Pakistan after heavy monsoon rains led to catastrophic flooding, leaving one-third of the country under water. Our rapid response provided clean, safe water to thousands of internally displaced people living in temporary camps.

 Thanks to the support of so many who have come alongside us, we were able to provide emergency shipments of water treatment systems, water purification supplies, and hygiene kits. As of September 20, our team on the ground in the Sindh province of Pakistan has installed multiple safe water treatment systems. Each system can provide enough safe water for 500 families each day.

Residents of the Sindh region are now able to access safe water and avoid dangerous waterborne illnesses that become more prevalent after a disaster if safe water is not readily available. We are happy to share that another shipment is on its way to Pakistan.

Water Mission is blessed to be in the position to respond to multiple humanitarian crises at one time. Because of your generosity, we have been able to provide safe water to those displaced by heavy flooding in Pakistan, as well as those impacted by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
