[벨기에] 자일럼, EU 집행위원회가 도시 하·폐수처리 지침을 진전시킬 것을 촉구

글로벌 수처리 기술 기업인 자일럼(Xylem)은 유럽의 하·폐수처리 부문을 발전시키려는 유럽연합 집행위원회의 노력을 환영하면서도 더 나아가야 한다고 촉구했다.

도시 하·폐수처리 지침(UWWTD)가 채택된 지 30년이 지난 지금, 유럽연합 집행위원회(European Commission)는 초기 개정안을 도입했다. 개정된 UWWTD에는 EU의 온실 가스(GHG) 배출 감소 약속이 포함됐다.

알렉시스 드 커쵸브(Alexis de Kerchove) 자일럼 고객 지속가능성 수석 담당자는 "자일럼은 EU 집행위원회의 개정된 지침, 특히 바이오가스 생산 중 메탄 배출을 포함하는 것을 환영하지만, 또한 위원회가 명확한 목표와 함께 유틸리티에 대한 탄소중립을 추진하기 위해 아산화질소와 같은 다른 온실가스의 공정 배출 감소를 위한 로드맵을 모색할 것을 촉구한다"면서 "마찬가지로, 하·폐수 처리 부문의 디지털화의 중요성을 인식하는 것이 가장 중요하다. 이는 EU의 디지털 및 녹색 전환에 기여하고 폐수 처리 공장이 온실 가스 배출을 최소화하고 비용 효율적인 방식으로 지침의 새로운 요구 사항을 구현하는 데 도움이 될 것”이라고 말했다.

Xylem Urges European Commission To Go Further With Its New Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive

Global water technology company Xylem(NYSE:XYL) has welcomed the European Commission’s efforts to advance the European wastewater treatment sector, but urged it to go further.

Thirty years since the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD) was adopted, the European Commission has today introduced an initial revision. Among the cornerstones of the revised UWWTD are the EU’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction commitments.

“We welcome the Commission’s revised legislation, especially the inclusion of methane emissions during biogas production, but we also urge the Commission to explore reducing process emissions of other GHGs, such as nitrous oxide to drive a net zero approach for utilities – with clear targets and roadmap for reducing those emissions”, said Alexis de Kerchove, Xylem’s Senior Director for Client Sustainability. “Likewise, it’s paramount to recognize the importance of digitalizing the wastewater treatment sector. This will contribute to the EU’s twin digital and green transitions and help wastewater treatment plants implement the directive’s new requirements with minimal greenhouse gas emission and in a cost-effective way.”

A revised UWWTD that considers energy neutrality requirements for wastewater treatment plants will both help cut CO2 emissions and also align with other EU legislation in the fight against climate change – such as the EU Climate Law, Fit for 55 package and RePowerEU. Water and wastewater infrastructure are major GHG contributors, making up approximately 2% of global GHG emissions – on a par with the global shipping industry.
