Saudi Arabia Localizes Desalination Industry

"Desalination signs an agreement to mine salt return water with investments from the private sector to contribute to the GDP of 1.5 billion riyals annually in 2030"

The Saline Water Desalination Corporation signed a number of agreements with local and international companies in the mining techniques of salt return water and reverse osmosis membranes, with a total financial investment from the local and international private sector starting in its first phase with one billion and one hundred million riyals, and this was in a press conference held on Saturday in the Saudi capital Riyadh, where the conference was sponsored by His Excellency the Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Eng. Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadhli and in the presence of His Excellency the Deputy Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, Eng. Osama Al-Zamil, and the Deputy Minister Environment, Water and Agriculture Eng. Mansour Al-Mushaiti, H.E. Eng. Abdullah Al-Abdulkarim, Governor of the Saline Water Desalination Corporation, and CEO of the Local Content Authority Abdulrahman Al-Sammari.

The agreements signed included an additional desalination agreement for the mining of salt return water, with the two specialized chemistry companies for industry, and (Ngxia TP Saudi Arabia), which is dedicated to the mining of salt return water and the extraction of precious metals and salts, with the aim of achieving an additional value in the GDP of up to 1.5 billion riyals annually in 2030, in addition to producing desalinated drinking water of high quality.

The mineral bromine, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and lithium are extracted in various stages, which are used in the oil and gas industry, pharmaceuticals, construction, food industries and various chemical industries.

"Desalination" also concluded an agreement of cooperation and engineering support for Saudi companies specialized in the establishment of desalination plants and water transmission systems, where these companies proved their ability and high seriousness in the localization of engineering and technical works during their recent work with the Corporation to build desalination plants and giant transport systems, which are 100% Saudi companies, foremost of which is Rawafed Industrial Company and Bahour Company, while signing a contract for the localization of the manufacture of reverse osmosis membranes for desalinated water, and the establishment of an integrated relay factory, which is the first of its kind in the East, was announced.

The Middle East will establish the factory with diverse production lines and the quality and efficiency of the product is the highest in the world in its indicators to reduce energy consumption and longevity and its adoption of advanced concepts in the service of the environment, and the production of the factory aims to cover the high and growing demand for this promising industry locally and globally, in a way that achieves Revenues of SR 690 million in the Kingdom and the Gulf by 2025, and the product, which will be co-developed by Saline Water Desalination Corporation (SWCC), has the advantage of reducing the cost rate by more than (14%) and reducing energy consumption by a rate starting from (4%).

For his part, H.E. Eng. Abdullah bin Ibrahim Al-Abdulkarim, Governor of Desalination, said: "The environmentally friendly reverse osmosis membrane industry industry represents today one of the most important enablers of the desalination industry in the world, and the demand for them is increasing at an annual rate of up to 6% locally and 7% in the Gulf, and we targeted their localization because they are a basic and strategic product, creating a new industrial value that contributes to driving growth and economic diversification, and that the production of the plant will start in 2025 and will achieve a return on GDP of 1.14 billion within 5 years, and with the impact of An annual trade balance of SR 135 million, in addition to the water sector, the oil, gas and industrial sectors are served, with a production capacity of 254,000 membranes, 10% of which meet the need of the General Organization for Desalination of Saline Water, while 55% of it is allocated to the local water sector, compared to 5% for the oil and gas sector, with 30% of the products exported to cover external demand. Note that 70% of the production inputs will be the sources of production within the Kingdom.

He added: "We are partnering with the stakeholders and a number of sectors, owners of industrial facilities and contractors the next steps for the future of the desalination industry, and we proceed in this from an integrated and economic perspective focused on the gains that bring the people of the country good and sustainable benefit, to produce a new generation and a young national leadership in light of the availability of its components, which lie in the strength and efficiency of Saudi contractors, who have become highly capable of participating uniquely and distinctively in the establishment of major projects in desalination and exporting their expertise and industrial knowledge abroad, Especially in light of the existence of giant production systems built with large capacities globally up to 600,000 cubic meters / day with RO technologies.

He continued: "The Center for the Development of Non-Oil Revenues, which is a center based on thought and adoption of initiatives provided by the private and public sectors to serve the national economy and raise the domestic product, was a certain good for the Foundation's initiatives in stimulating private sector investments, which makes us have promising opportunities in maximizing the benefit of the desalination industry and related industries, which contributes positively to the output of desalinated water, and we also have a high potential to serve many diverse sectors according to a view based on a sense of national responsibility. Today, we are signing an agreement with a Saudi company to invest in the production of bromine, in quantities of up to 16,000 tons covering 30% of domestic demand in 2024, as well as its contribution to the GDP of 150 million riyals per year for 2024 and 1.5 billion riyals per year for 2030, and with investments from the private sector starting from 800 million riyals per year in 2024 and up to 8 billion riyals annually in 2030 to produce many minerals with a direct impact on the development of growth opportunities. Reducing the cost for many local industries in line with the axes of economic prosperity in the Kingdom's Vision 2030.
