[미국] 자일럼, 청소년의 물문제 관심 이끌어내기 위해 노력

청소년 혁신가들, 솔루션 기반 사고 통해 물 접근성 및 안보에 대한 조치 주도

젊은 혁신가들의 성장하는 글로벌 운동은 물 부문이 물 접근성 및 보안과 같은 시급한 문제에 대처하는 데 도움을 주고 있다. 뛰어난 젊은이들이 물을 관리하는 혁신적인 방법을 개발하고 지역 사회의 다른 사람들에게 물 문제에 대해 교육함으로써 보다 지속 가능한 세상을 만드는 데 도움을 주고 있다.

스톡홀름에서 열린 '2022년 세계 물 주간(World Water Week 2022)'에서 캐나다의 애나벨 레이슨(Annabelle Rayson)은 동물성 플랑크톤이라는 수생 미생물을 사용해 해로운 녹조의 처리 및 예방에 대한 연구로 스톡홀름 주니어 물상(SJWP)을 수상했다. 이 프로젝트는 특정 종의 담수 동물성 플랑크톤의 다양한 유전자형의 생체 조작을 조사하여 조류를 먹고 개화를 제어하는 데 가장 적합한 유형을 결정했다. 그녀의 연구 결과는 담수 보호 및 보존 노력에 영향을 미칠 수 있다.

레이슨은은 SJWP에 참여하기 위해 40개국 이상에서 온 수만 명의 학생 중 한 명입니다. 젊은 리더들이 앞장서서 기후 및 지속 가능성 솔루션에 대한 업계 전문가와 협력하여 물 문제를 해결하기 때문이다.

젊은 혁신가들의 빌딩 무브먼츠(building movement) 중에는 최근 해크취리히 자일럼 워터 챌린(HackZurich Xylem Water Challenge)에서 우승한 'Team WatApp'이 있다. 지난 9월에는 스위스 취리히에서 열린 40시간 논스톱 해커톤 이벤트에서 사람들이 일상 생활에서 현명한 물 선택을 하고 장기적인 물 절약 습관을 기르고 그 결과를 공유하도록 돕는 소셜 게임 앱으로 우승했다. 

청소년 리더십을 보여주는 다른 유망한 프로젝트로는 작년 자일럼 이그나이트 이노베이션 챌리지(Xylem Ignite Innovation Challenge)에 참가한 'UpLift'가 있다. 이 프로젝트는 침수 심각도를 예측하기 위해 기존 데이터를 교육할 수 있는 기계 학습 모델을 사용한다. 전용 앱을 통해 사용자는 정확한 강우 및 홍수 예측을 생성하기 위해 방류, 게이지 높이 및 강우 값을 입력할 수 있습니다. 이 응용 프로그램은 또한 더 큰 인식 및 교육을 위해 일반적인 홍수 용어를 설명하고 사용자가 커뮤니티 참여를 촉진하기 위해 피드백을 제공할 수 있는 포털이 있다.

글로벌 물 기술 리더인 자일럼(Xylem)은 SJWP의 장기적인 후원, 해크취리히와의 파트너십, 자일럼 이그나이트 이노베이션 챌린지를 통해 청소년 참여를 촉진하고 있다. 지난해에 자일럼 이그나이트 이노베이트 챌린지는 전 세계에서 800명이 넘는 학생들을 초대하여 실제 물 문제에 대한 솔루션을 설계하고 개발했다.

또한 자일럼은 최근 젊은이들에게 글로벌 물 문제에 대한 행동을 촉구하는 것을 목표로 하는 연합인 맨체스터시치 풀봇 클럽(Manchester City Football Club)과의 파트너십 갱신을 발표했다. 2021년부터 맨체스터시티와 자일럼은 상파울루, 뭄바이, 케이프타운, 뉴욕, 상하이의 젊은 지도자들이 이끄는 물 교육 활동을 지원하는 이니셔티브인 Water Heroes Academy를 통해 전 세계적으로 6천 명 이상의 학생에게 접근했다.

올해 맨체스터시티와 자일럼은 멕시코시티, 부에노스아이레스, 케이프 코스트, 쿠알라룸푸르, 멜버른에서 청소년 주도 프로젝트를 포함하는 이니셔티브의 확장을 발표했다. 올 11월, 맨체스터 시티 팬들은 5개의 새로운 프로젝트에 대해 자세히 알아보고 가장 좋아하는 젊은 물 영웅에게 투표할 기회를 갖게 된다. 워터 히어로 아카데미(Water Heroes Academy) 네트워크는 향후 4년 동안 2만 명의 더 많은 젊은이들에게 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것을 목표로 한다.

Youth Innovators Step Up to Help Communities Around the World Solve Urgent Water Challenges

Solutions-Based Thinking from Young Leaders Drives Action on Water Accessibility and Security

A growing global movement of young innovators is helping the water sector make progress against urgent challenges like water accessibility and security. Brilliant young minds are helping shape a more sustainable world by developing innovative ways to manage water and by educating others in their communities about water challenges.

At World Water Week 2022 in Stockholm, Canada’s Annabelle Rayson received the Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) for her research on treating and preventing harmful algae blooms using micro aquatic organisms called zooplankton. The project looked at the biomanipulation of different genotypes of a particular species of freshwater zooplankton to determine the best type to eat the algae and control blooms. Her findings can help influence freshwater protection and conservation efforts.

Rayson is among tens of thousands of students from more than 40 countries to engage with the SJWP, as young leaders come to the fore and solve water in collaboration with industry experts on climate and sustainability solutions.

“Young people need to be involved with water because this is our future, our planet. What inspires me is the fact that people are becoming more and more aware of water issues. People have taken water for granted, but with climate change, people realize that we need to do something,” said Rayson. “Participating in the SJWP, I met 58 phenomenal students around my age from every corner of the globe. Seeing their passion, research, and drive to make the world a better place gives me hope.”

Among the building movement of young innovators is Team WatApp, which recently won the HackZurich Xylem Water Challenge. In September, the team won the non-stop 40-hour hackathon event in Zurich, Switzerland, with a social gaming app that helps people make smart water choices in their everyday lives, build long-term water-saving habits, and share their results with friends.

Other promising projects showcasing youth leadership include UpLift, a participant in last year’s Xylem Ignite Innovation Challenge. The project uses a machine learning model that can train existing data to predict flooding severity. Through a dedicated app, users can input discharge, gauge height and rainfall values to generate accurate rainfall and flooding predictions. The application also explains common flood terminology for greater awareness and education, and has a portal where users can provide feedback to promote community engagement.

Global water technology leader Xylem (NYSE:XYL) has a history of promoting youth engagement through its long-running sponsorship of the SJWP, its partnership with HackZurich, and the Xylem Ignite Innovation Challenge. Last year, the Xylem Ignite Innovation Challenge invited more than 800 students from around the world to design and develop solutions to real-world water challenges.

Xylem also recently announced the renewal of its partnership with Manchester City Football Club, an alliance that aims to inspire young people to act on global water issues. Since 2021, the Club and Xylem have reached more than 6,000 students globally through the Water Heroes Academy – an initiative that supports water education activities led by young leaders in São Paulo, Mumbai, Cape Town, New York City and Shanghai.

This year, the Club and Xylem announced an expansion of the initiative to include youth-led projects in Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Cape Coast, Kuala Lumpur, and Melbourne. This November, Manchester City fans will have a chance to learn more about the five new projects and vote for their favorite young water heroes. The Water Heroes Academy network aims to positively impact 20,000 more young people over the next four years.
